Its hard to quantify a lot of the work cripps does on tv

I get to games a few times a year and the work he does off the ball is immense.

I remember reading somewhere he lead the comp for tackles inside 50 this year.

Only problem with his work off the ball is that it impacts his ability to finish, so he might need to put some extra work into his tank this preseason.

Really need to eliminate those fumbles at crucial moments.

Yeah his finishing lets him down - does all the hard work then spuds up the kick

The thing with cripps is that he's the type of player that you need to complement the live wire smalls. He's the work horse and a role player that most good teams need to have. The sudden decline of hill and lecras hasn't helped him either and now people expect more out of him. At the end of the day his best just over 30 goals a season but he brings immense forward pressure. I don't have the stats but i would say he would be one if not the best defensive forward in the comp.

Bad news for all the Masten haters out there.

'Simpson also used his time in front of the cameras to give 174-game campaigner Chris Masten a ringing endorsement.

The Eagles' senior coach expected the 28-year-old to come out all guns blazing next year after enduring a trying 2017 campaign.

Masten was in and out of the Eagles’ line-up for much of the year and spent the back end of the season honing his craft with East Perth in the WAFL.

“His back end of the season he struggled. It was one of those situations where one game wasn’t going to get him back, it was three or four, and we weren’t in a position to ride him through that,” Simpson said.

“He’s ok. He’s in a good space and he’s had a really good off-season. He’s hit the ground running this year and I have full confidence he can get back to his form.”

I hope he's all talk. Worries me though with Masten always one of the best on the training track.

A good preseason really bodes well for Masten (or Muzza as I like to call him) to have a cracker of a season. Unusual for him to hit the ground running in pre-season, so he should be set for a cracker of a season now.

Masten had a fantastic preseason last year as well. Didnt help too much.

Meh. I would want every player on our list to have a huge preseason and better there chances of making the side. Thats the only way we get better as a football club. As a coach you would love every player to have a huge off season and push for selection. Eagle Wrath you're a very good poster but you dropped the ball on that post.

Remember that time when Buckley wanted to give Mayne back to Freo?

Oops. Fat fingers.

Simpson is hardly going to publicly bag Masten 4 months out from a new season. They had their meaningful chat at about the same time that Wellingham and Priddis were spoken to in late season 2017. Priddis stood up for himself and things turned to shite. Unlike Masten, Welly did not have the benefit of a 2018 contract. Masten was told that barring injury or very good form he is playing in the Magoos in 2018. Fair enough too.

May need to check this isn’t broken
No sarcasm this time. Masten always has a very good preseason. His work ethic is never in question.
It's his decision making and disposal on match day that is his problem.
He would make a good personal trainer one day.
He's had one good year for the eagles and cant use injuries as an excuse.

So Mastern having a great preseason is good for the team but I am not holding my breath for it to help Masten. Gives him another chance though and better than a bad preseason obviously.

Masten destroying a few houses in preseason is nothing new. So hence everyone loves to have a good laugh about it.

I think at times he is a little unfairly criticised and people take the joke a too seriously. The fact he is putting in at training should actually be a good thing and with the restructure of the list and team, I think the few good parts about his game could be utilised well next year (as a role player only). However the issue will be if/when he is taking playing time away from younger guys like Parto, Cole maybe Mut's

If 2012 Masto makes an appearance all well and good.

He is just that build of player where he needs to hit contests at 100% every time or he bounces off. He has to have his mindset right or he will just float through the game.

The biggest problem for Masten has been the rise of players who are significantly bigger than his build that also have the tank to run with him for the whole game. He doesn't get a lot of the ball late in quarters any more when his endurance gets him out on his own on the switch these days. Masten possessions with space are typically high quality. Masten possessions under pressure typically end in HTB.
