Gaff does four things that Masten rarely does :

1. Gaff runs forward when he has the ball in hand.
2. Gaff doesn't loiter around the half back flank in the last four minutes of every quarter to get cheap possession that pad his game day stats.
3. Gaff puts his body on the line when its his turn to go whereas Masten avoids physical contact at all costs.
4. Gaff can get a handball away when tackled.

Masten's compass when confronted with having to run forwards into a position where he may get tackled .

Mastens road map for an attacking move if an opposition player advanced towards him.

In short any direction except straight ahead as he might take some physical contact.
you forgot the 360 he does every time he gets a feed back.

Completely agree, especially when you have the club's supporters desperate for some regeneration of the list. Also his hip complaint has not been a secret, and the murmurs surrounding this potentially being his last year. I would like to think Hill got another year as depth, because I've always appreciated what he does well for our team, rather than focus on his limitations.
But you can put your house on LeCras, because the source has a 50% stake in putting him on this earth.

Sounds like his old man doesn't mind chatting about his career (that's where my mail came from) or maybe both parents dabble.

Swapping out footies for fishing rods.

He was saying this morning that Masten has been having talks with Essendon.

Yeah i heard that on the rumor report.

Being that he is contracted for another two years i wonder what we could get for him? An early second rounder for be good which we could use to get Mcgovern without losing to many draft picks.

Going by this link for indicative order ( could be out a bit since that was after round 16)

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-07-11/indicative-draft-order-your-clubs-picks-after-r16

We have picks:

10, 27, 45, 63, 81.

If legit, Essendon are massive campaigners with trades so I'd say we'd probably get a third if we're lucky.

Does anyone find it concerning that in the last few years we've mercilessly disposed of players like Bennell (and potentially Hill), when on form they aren't necessarily the worst in the team? I'm hesitant to call it an active racism thing, but both seem to have suddenly entered the MC's black book far quicker than any other players in poor form.

This post might cop a bunch of criticism as lefty bullshit but I think it's still important to ask the question from time to time. The MC's persistence with Jetta would be a counter-argument.

Yeah but with a player like Bennell for instance he OK in his role but when you have players like Nelson & Cole in the wings who have more talent you have make a choice and cut that player to allow us to develop the squad further. Hill is pretty good in his role and when Lecra was out of form it should have been him dropped for Karpany and not Hill.

Bennell's form last year was so bad he was dropped to WAFL reserves. He was a pretty clear candidate for delisting.

I think Hill's problem is he doesn't get enough of the ball. He is a half decent goal scorer but with Rioli and now Karpany coming through they will go with the younger guys. He has been on short contracts for a while too. Would be decent depth.

I dont know about Bennell being in good form. He was always mediocre.

What everyone on here always forgets is it comes down to contracts. There may be a worse player on the list but if they are contracted for next year then they wont be cut. Bennell and possibly Hill this year were near the bottom of the pile for uncontracted players.

It did seem like he went from in the squad to on the outer overnight though. My memory might be incorrect, but I feel like it wasn't as if his form went steeply off a cliff around the time he was still getting games. My interpretation was that his form dropped as he realised he wouldn't be making it back into the squad - but I'm happy to be corrected.

He shifted forward at the start of last year as sort of a Hail Mary because he was well back in the queue to play as a defender. He played the first two games, lost his spot, was an emergency a couple of times, then got dropped to the ressies by round 11. He was an emergency in round 8 so he shouldn't have felt too far away at that point.

There's no way you can play the race card on his delisting.

Bradd Dalziell is probably the unluckiest guy to get axed in recent times, played 18 games in 2013 but lost his spot, and he's a pasty ranga. As WCErevival said it comes down to contracts.

Bennell played as a small forward last week at SD.... kicked two first quarter goals including one from nearly mark of the year, looked really good. May have hyperextended his knee landing from the mark so lucky Swans have a bye this week !

Tryce Stewart Is an indigenous small forward at SD also and he is a really talented youngster who would be up to AFL, hopefully WCE consider .

"Play the race card" is an over-simplification of what I meant - and you don't need to do that to contend with my question, since you've raised other legitimate points. Overall I don't think it's a huge stretch to question if it's possible that the match committee would have an easier time axing certain players with whom they hadn't formed as strong a relationship - a difference in culture / race could contribute to that.

Whether or not Bennell was justifiably axed, based on his wife's social media posts at the time, they were both disgruntled with the club.

Jamie Bennell -2016

Started the season in the best 22 after remodelling himself as a small forward over the preseason - had 17 disposals and 2 goals in Round 1 against Brisbane but was dropped after a goal less 5 disposal effort against Hawthorn the following week.

Played six league games at East Perth with 9, 20, 10, 17, 14 and 7 disposals and a total of 2 goals in those games.

Was dropped to the reserves and after games of 12, 20 and 18 disposals was brought back into the league side where he managed just two 8 and 13 disposal games being being dropped again.

Reserves games of 13 disposals & 2 goals followed by a 21 disposal, 5 goal effort earned another recall. Games of 17 disposals, 3 goals and 13 and 1 followed in the league team.

His last game was an 8 disposal, 1 goal effort in EP's elimination final against Peel

To be honest, his form wasn't great and as a 26 year old unable to cement a spot in EP's league side it's not hard to see why he was a candidate for delisting

Lucas, Colledge, Adamson and the unfortunate Waterman were also delisted along with McGinnity who may have refused a contract offer. Ellis and Cavka has previously retired. We didn't make a lot of list changes - 8, one of who was a Category B rookie. Other players who survived the cut and were offered another contract were Hill, Butler and Lamb who all had more to offer than Bennell.

It's hard to make a case that Bennell was hard done by - he's now back playing with Swan Districts and has had a solid season averaging ~19 disposals and half a goal per game

Sorry, it was an over-simplification. It was a bit of a flippant comment and not really aimed at you.

Hill actually has provided us with good footy for extended periods of time. Jamie on the other hand didn't and was never a b22 player for us. Hill has had a massive fall from grace in the last month, he has gone from certain b22 to being rumoured to be delisted.

If we did axe Bennell due to differences in race / culture, then it would be a strange decision to draft Watson and Rioli who would be facing bigger cultural issues given they came from more remote regions initially.
