I wish people would stop bringing up Rockliff. If he comes in we will have Rockcliff, Sheed, Redden and Hutchings who are all plodders. That's what we've had this year and it's too many ploddders.
I'd be throwing money at Kelly first, he wins the ball, good on outside as well, good disposal, quicker than the any of the above.
Shai Bolton and Acres are 2 others. Bolton on the wing or half forward. Acres wing, half forward and in the guts.
I'd also get Mitch McGovern and draft Tim Kelly.
Don't ask how we do this, because we have nothing to give up.

mcgovern , matera and Ah Chee don't fix our midfield . Rockliff is also counter intuitive to getting games into our future midfield . It's my opinion that rockliff has his best footy behind him and is just looking for a last big contract

One or two players does not fix our midfield and it's a squad of 30 that wins flags.

Based on experience and quality 2018 we have a midfield group of:

  1. Shuey
  2. Yeo
  3. Gaff
  4. Naitanui
  5. Sheed
  6. Redden
  7. Jetta
  8. Hutchings followed by
  9. Venables
  10. Nelson
  11. Duggan
  12. Mutimer
  13. Partington
  14. 2017 first rounder pick 10ish (Hunter CLarke?)
  15. Lycett ruck / forward then add
  16. an Ah chee supported by high half forwards such as
  17. Mitch McGovern
  18. Karpany
  19. Cripps
  20. Trade in a Matera
  21. Rioli
That's the group that will rejuvenate our midfield and add pace and pressure from the forward half.

People on here saying we need a list clean out and rebuild don't understand where our list is at. The fact is we have a pretty bloody good group of KP forwards and backs which most sides do not.

The cupboard is far from bare and we should all be looking forward to see just what that group can deliver.

Just listened to most of the ABC 720 discussion with Duffield, Woewodin and co as I was driving home. Not the best but by far the worst of reporters.

They as a collective believe Eagles will have the following changes to list

Happened or will happen
Brophy - already done
Priddis - already done
Mitchell - tba next week
Petrie - did what was asked
Giles - knee not holding up
Mackenzie - did not articulate why
Butler - age and body
Hill - not in favour and cannot get a game when forwards out of form

More than likely but next month will determine
Lecras - if he stays he has been told it would likely be with a lot of time at EP and $ would reflect that
Wellers - as per Lecras
Lamb - just didn't happen for him but would likely get a gig if he is happy to spend another year developing (he is currently just 20)

That means 7 to 10 spots on the main list
If that is the case, I can see us taking some more mature bodies late in the draft (example Banfield)
Also see us going for a ruck late in the draft if we lose Giles and Petrie

That's not correct.

Players that may move that could net something.

A couple of these I will admit are quite aggressive moves and against how historically how we do things.

Not so aggressive / more luck than good management moves;
  1. Wellingham or Masten - direct swap for Matera or a 3rd round pick.
  2. EMac - FA move to Crows - 3rd round pick.
  3. Le cras - FA move to GWS - 3rd round pick.
  4. Schofield - better than people think IMO. Add a 3rd for a 2nd round pick upgrade to someone who needs a KP back now.
Some very aggressive moves;
  1. Lycett - trade to Port - 2nd rounder (if he wasn't injured so much this would be a min), not that likely due to his fitness concerns and our ruck depth.
  2. Vardy - trade to Port - 2nd round pick - actually something that Port would consider IMO. They desperately need another tall forward part time ruck to help Ryder.
  3. Hurn - to Crows for M McGovern. OK this is super aggressive and a 1 in 100 chance to be considered but Hurn is 30 and the Crows are in flag mode.
  4. Gaff - to Saints for a 1st rounder + Acres. Replaces Montagna. Acres struggling to force his way into the side. We are losing one of our best mids for sure but to get something of quality you need to give up something. Would use the 1st rounder to draft a Kennedy replacement and Acres slots straight into the side.
On top of this I would use our 2nd rounder this year and even next years as trade currency. Our 2nd next year would be attractive as most have us sliding down the ladder in 2018. I would be talking to clubs who need draft points for father son or academy picks. Offer next years 2nd + any 3rd or 4th round 2017 picks to accumulate points in exchange for decent 2nd round or late first round picks this year.

I'm not even going to mention trading Darling or Barrass as IMO that's crazy talk.

To say we have nothing to offer is way off the mark.

I'd say that list is about right. Of that list, you'd think that Mackenzie, Hill, Lamb, and Wellers are possibilities to stay. I don't know why they would offer LeCras a contract - he's clearly cooked. Hill has shown more than him this year. I hope we keep Lamb, only because he is still young and it's possible he can still offer something.

I'd be happy to trade Gaff if it meant we got something reasonable in return. Also happy to trade Masten and Hurn - I think we can cover both. I'd say the rest are off the table, will retire, or won't be offered a contract by us so could be grabbed by another team for nothing.

On a side note the West is being mischievous saying that brother Jeremy is coming out of contract next season and as a restricted free agent next season , the Eagles need to sure up McGoverns services with a long term deal which could help snare Mitch McGovern maybe .
Seems like he's pretty happy as an Eagle to me, got a lot of mates there, and surely he would be very well remunerated next contract as one of the top five players at the club.

I actually agree with trading Lycett, we would get a good pick back.
Dont see the club even looking at trading Gaff.
Will probably get a third rounder for Mackenzie with free agency.
I wouldn't trade Schofield
The club will either offer LeCras one year he'll retire can't see him moving for one year, but I've been wrong many times you can just ask my wife.

My point about needing midfielders is pointed out more by your list .
Your list gets average or very inexperienced after pick 5 and 1 of those five is a ruck .
Ah Chee is shit and would be playing for East Perth .
I would rather montford at least he is a mid and has a tank unlike Ah Chee .

We need to add at least 2 gun mids to that list of we wanted to contend and have breakout seasons from a handful of youngsters .

Can anyone shed any light on Lamb? He wasn't awful in his first game and then has spent the next 60 in the wafl? Can't recall him being on an extended bench even.

Well our first pick needs to used on a gun mid simple as that and I dont want to over pay trading in one so go to the draft.

We need to pull a rabbit out of the hat for the second, either they are already on the list (Venebles) and will develop or we draft a Kelly or more mature mid later in the draft and get lucky aka Priddis off the rookie list. We are due for some luck.

Will we be interested in Tim Kelly? And will he make it to the rookie draft?
I would like to see us give him a chance along with L.Ryan

Id like to see other sides list of mids past 5.

Yes you need depth to cover injuries but we need is defensive pace across half forward and the midfield so our pressure can actually affect the contest. Running in slow motion 10m off the play as we have seen is a fatal floor.

We add a SPP type with pick 10 plus Venebles plus more pace inside 50 and off the bench we have the ingredients to build on.
