I was listening to the AFL draft podcast from a couple of weeks ago - Will Sutherland was rated as one of the best KP's in the draft and he had only played school footy and the U18's. To not have any TAC exposure as a Victorian but still be rated so highly would either suggest he is very good, or the crop around him isn't that high quality.

On that front - we could be lucky and someone like Fogarty slides to us, he didn't have the greatest carnival- but he has tricks and genuine versatility.

Also, on a side note - they interviewed Oscar Allen on the podcast - he seems a very motivated young man. Wasn't happy with his performance (didn't think he gave a complete performance in the champs despite winning the larke medal) Given he would be a 3rd tall, I doubt he ends up with us, but whoever picks him will be impressed I think. Spoke really well.

Fair bit to play out this year, for all we know we may magically win our next 4 - but I much prefer the discussion on the draft in this thread than who's leaving us to join the mob down the road. ;)
Will Sutherland is the son of James Sutherland and I believe has already nominated cricket as his career path, so he won't be nominating for the draft. :)

Fogarty is an interesting one. I think he shapes more like a utility than a KPF. He's played a bit of midfield in the past and alot of his highlights appear to be in the defensive half where he can put his clean ball use to use (he is sometimes the nominated kickout after a behind). He seems to be a strong contested player and is athletic so if he can get over his production issues he could be a good midfield prospect and unlike anything we have currently (other than maybe Redden). His game of four possessions against VM is a bit off putting and his champs wasn't convincing on the whole so I think he could actually slide past our pick.

Fingers crossed Allen can grow to 194cm or so. At this stage I'd happily take him in the second round as he clearly has talent.

In terms of players that could potentially become 'elite mids' you'd have to look at Nick Coffield for our first pick. Classy outside player with a knack for intercept marking. If he develops a proper midfield game he has one of the higher upsides of those likely to be available at our pick.

The inherent risk with him is that his best position becomes as a medium defender and we are building a surplus of those as it is.

Will be interesting to see how Coffield runs the rest of the TAC Cup season out for The Northern Knights.

There will be plenty of opportunity for him to be played through the midfield, however his best work so far has been as an attacking half back.
Thats a position that we are not short on and I would like to be convinced that his game would transition to the midfield before we took him with our first rounder.
The Knight's should play finals and that always an critical part of a players progression and where players can move their names further up the draft board as happened with Ollie Florent and Tim Taranto last season. This time last year the Sandringham pair were seen as half forward flankers that could take a rotation in the midfield. Excellent final series where both Taranto and Florent were given more extensive midfield roles saw their stocks rise.

After the TAC Cup finals the next show case is the All Stars game which will be grand final week.

Is it just me or does Dominic Grant have a touch of the Wellinghams?

Good footballer is young Dominic ( Junior ) Grant, one to keep an eye on where he gets drafted.
Shame about the foot injury that has hampered his game this year, the kid has some go about him.
Stress fractures in the feet are never injuries that should be taken lightly, lets hope he fully recovers and forges himself a career in the AFL.

We should be sniffing around Pickett at Carlton. Isn't getting much of a look in, Blues will be drafting more top line kids again and he wouldn't cost much, 3rd rounder at the most.

We were keen to draft him but GWS went waaaay to early with pick 4. Foot issues have held him back. Not a bad option off the HFF / bench.
What would he offer us? Let him go to Freo. Please......

The downside is that if he transitions into the midfield and excels this season then he's probably out of our reach at pick ~10. Potentially elite players are discounted when they haven't proven themselves in the guts and that's why we get the likes of Duggan and Venables in the early teens. :p

So best case scenario he remains a secret elite mid!

For what it's worth, those talking about players being upset about Priddis' treatment and rifts etc (i.e. McGovern wanting to leave) see the link: https://thewest.com.au/sport/afl/ma...th-adam-simpson-over-retirement-ng-b88557889z

Priddis actually says "My relationship with Adam is awesome. He is a mate". Whilst I realise he isn't going to sh*t can him in the media, the words are positive rather than neutral or damned by faint praise type words. I think it was simply a tough decision for all involved and whilst it no doubt hurts, it doesn't seem like there is any rift. Also, he plans to run marathons next year. Not sure he will be breaking any records but good on him.

Highly rated by the club I recall and has had foot fractures that have held him back.

What does he add, pace and goal kicking. Along with Rioli Pickett would be another option to replacing Hill and Le cras.

If he cost not much why wouldn't we? Not that old with a heap of upside.

Need to build a squad of 30 players to contend. Given this years draft may not be that deep if we somehow landed another couple of 3rd round picks I'd be happy to take a risk on Pickett.

I'd rather go to the draft than get pickett, milera and sambono are exciting young players that could be picked up later in the draft

Young Pickett was easily let go by GWS. If he is easily let go by Carlton in a rebuilding phase that surely says something. I'd take him on the rookie list if he gets delisted but that's about it
There would be something in that if the Blues were happy to let him go. And with a couple of third round picks there may be players such as Kelly we would be better having a punt on.

If someone like Lamb was to ask for a trade his value would be close to that of a Pickett. Basically two clubs facilitating a swap of fringe players. If we lose today our run at finals is over, if so it will be interesting to see if fringe players like Lamb get 2 or 3 games to show if they are worth persevering with or if they decide to request a trade generate some interest from other clubs. The most likely would be Karpany and Lamb IMO.

The West understands there has been no significant advancement around new deals that would keep either McGovern or Yeo at the Eagles beyond 2018 .

Strap yourselfs in folks although I feel confident they will stay and if they dont we can use the picks we get as our rebuild .

I suspect they will both stay - very early days and sensible management would be looking to improve their package.

However they are over hyped and have faults - but fantastic trade value.

I think the bolder bit is key. Nothing
To worry about at this point

I think both will stay but would be more disappointed losing Yeo.

I love Gov and his ability to play basically anywhere is great but playing both Gov and Barrass as intercept players down back can be a liability at times.

Plus I think the return we would get for Gov would be greater than Yeo

Can't see why Yeo would go. He's already moved clubs once. Would make no sense to move again.

Gov is a possibility but like its been mentioned we can use Barrass as that intercept defender. We just need to find another key defender.

Bruce mentioned something last night at qtr time about a long term deal for McGovern but I didn't hear it all. Did anyone else catch it?

I can see McGovern repaying the faith shown in him by West Coast early in his career.

Yeo is a non story. My guess is Yeo is posturing for a bigger slice of the pie and that's probably reasonable if he can actually keep up and improve on his existing form.

If we lose Yeo and Gov, hissy and the dickhead at the top will have to all resign.

I wasn't a footy fan around 2000/01 but I'd assume our club would have reached that sort of level of those two boys leave.
