Injury somewhat. There's word he is trying sternly to stay in SA.

This.
I heard that also from a couple of Vic scouters that he wants to stay in SA .

Shep actually ran off half back a couple of times vs Carlton. Looks considerably quicker on the dash than Duggle and Nelson. Seems a really underutilised resource since 2015 IMO.
Luckily I didn't watch the carlton game.

He's certainly capable of more run, just wonder if it's a coaching instruction. Definitely under-utilised. His fumbly hands don't help though and maybe it's caused him to lose confidence in his ability to rebound

Fumbly hands >>> Fumbly feet

Fogarty is someone we'd be crazy not to add to our list if we could. Big bodied/explosive INSIDE BULL. Could be a bust but could also be a gem.

Heard he's still a potential top 5 pick anyway? Despite the average form in the U18 champs and his latest injury. Would take a brave club punting on him with a pick that high.

Fogarty could be the next Colledge. We poorly develop mids so pass on him.

Dark Sharks I don't think his championships were as bad as its being made out to be . Sure he didn't play as well as he was expected to, but he didn't play badly at all .
He was thrown around the ground in many of the games and I think that the lack of positional continuity hurt his performance .
I watched him live at some of the championships and watched him being switched between half forward and midfield and then being moved down back to help steam the tide and rebound the ball forward .
His half forward work in particular is very good , his defence is also good . It's his midfield work that still needs developing but from the skill set that he has I don't think the midfield development is beyond him.
Size wise he is already plug in and play.
He won't, IMO, be a bust at worst he will be a very damaging HFF but his upside is just too high to pass on if he was there for our pick .

The fact that he played the Championships with a torn miniscus certainly didn't help him, but kudos to him for at least having the balls to want to still play.

I remember Logue being talked up as a potential mid. Is he a bit like Logue in a sense. I would love someone like Fogarty but as I said before, I don't trust our development of young mids.

Vishy Fogarty is a ten times better footballer than Colledge was. Even if Fogarty doesn't transition to the midfield he already is a very dangerous HFF.

I agree on talent. It just I don't rate our development of mids.

Still have that lingering suspicion we will flick our pick 9 for two of the GC's picks in the 20s, using one for McGovern (or using it ourselves to fill our list spots).

Regardless, I've kept a rolling phantom draft of my own just to try and get a feel for who I'd expect to be available for our pick 9 (even though it's so early).

I think we can safely rule out Rayner, Luke Davies-Uniacke and probably Adam Cerra. Then (although to a lesser extent) I'd expect Paddy Dow and Jarrod Brander to be off the board by the time our pick rolls around. At this early juncture, I'd expect a few of the following group to be in our range:

Nick Coffield (190cm HBF/MID - Classy but no guarantees to be a mid)
Jack Higgins (178cm FWD/MID - See above, competitive player but height may be a concern)
Joel Garner (184cm MID/DEF - Skilfull mid/def that has bolted up the rankings lately)
Jaidyn Stephenson (189cm FWD/WING - Explosive, tall wingman, question mark is consistency)
Darcy Fogarty (191cm KPF/MID - Competent big bodied mid at U18 level but will he be another Jack Darling at the next level?)
Lochie O'Brien (184cm MID - Outside mid with elite kick that lacks contested game)
Not a Hunter Clarke fan?

How come?

If you look at the new running tracker feature on the AFL app, Shep has been the fastest player in a number of our matches. Clocks up a higher top speed than Duggan, Nelson and even Yeo.

That's probably reached through the action of chasing/spoiling rather than running with the ball though

Just pointing out that he has a lot of toe which is perhaps being underutilised

Have vic scouters resolved whole venables/spp debate at all by any chance?

Wouldn't be disappointed with Higgins...

I noticed this as well - problem for him is that his feet go faster than his brain meaning his dashes do not end up with the desired scoreboard impact (either directly or in an assist).

If we're cutting deep ( > 8 gone at end of year), I would not be against getting Motlop as RFA.

Obviously he's been shit and this would likely be a huge bust. But if the cost is only salary cap & giving Masten the boot, then surely he'd be better odds than a 4th or 5th round draft pick.
