Brandon Matera looks to be shopping for a new home. Never going to be a-grade but I'd prefer him over le cras if he comes as a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Genuinely plays as a small forward and apart from Willie we're a little light on there.
Even prefer Matera to Cripps

We've played 2 good games in the last 2 seasons (premiership-standard football).
Against Hawthorn and Adelaide at the end of last year.

Gaff was BOG in both those games 38 and 41 touches I think.
If our team gets going Gaff is such a key factor for us going all the way.

Unless we're getting two top 10 picks for him (i.e way overs) I wouldn't be letting him go.

It is concerning that he just signed a 2 year deal, but hopefully his manager was just keeping it short to get the most after the salary cap increase.

I understand the negativity targeted at Gaff, he's been good this year without being excellent.
He falls under the same banner as Darling where his level of performance has been at a high level for a long time so expectations are very high.
Darling this year has kicked another 40 goals to be top 15 in the comp for goals, yet we called for his head last year.
Gaff offers a lot, he's not a tough in and under player, yes his kicking has dropped a tad, but Shuey has been pretty poor for a few months, yet we don't look to trade him.
Both Shuey and Gaff are probably struggling with some injuries that I'm sure will be revealed end of year.

Gaffs best is AA-quality (top 5 brownlow worthy) football that shouldn't be given up lightly.

Yes you need to trade quality to get quality, but lets look at areas where we have a surplus rather than weakening our most vulnerable position.

There are question marks over his personality and he's no Harley Bennell or Charlie Dixon when it comes to talent.

This was almost certainly to allow him to reach the eight-year threshold for becoming a restricted free agent, allowing him to either leave or leverage a better deal from us. Pretty standard for a player of his standing.

I rate Gaff highly and agree with your assessment of him for the most part but if trading him meant we ultimately ended up with someone like Patrick Cripps - a contested beast who would allow Sheed and Shuey to play more outside - I'd be all for it

If you could guarantee the player we'd get in the draft would be a Cripps/Oliver type I'd be very open to the idea.
Can't guarantee that though.

Getting a top 10 picks doesn't guarantee a better player.
In fact I'd suggest the odds are well against you, of course you have to take a risk and hope you get that star player, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as getting rid of a very good player in Gaff will mean we get a Cripps-type player.

We need to make our midfield stronger.
It'd be nuts to weaken it further to get Gov Jr.
agreed.

There is next to no chance eagles will leave their midfield like this

Priddis retired
Sam Mitchell Retired
Andrew Gaff Traded

the picks in return if any would not be anywhere near enough nor would they be able to repair the loss in the long run either.

Not to mention not needing another forward.

I think he'd have a better chance at going to fremantle. A better trade could be something along the lines of

Mcgovern to Fremantle
Lachie Neale back home to Adelaide
With some pick exchanges, especially since Gibbs might not be leaving

hasn't done much for me I must say. to many question marks unless its a gift (3-4th rounder max)

Yes lets not make too many changes to the weakest midfield in the comp!

Is there an absolute gun midfielder we can target at 2? (I haven't looked at the draft much at all yet). That's the only way I'd do this trade but I'd rather do Lycett for McGovern and deal with Carlton directly.
Adelaide make out like bandits in that scenario and Carlton lose Pick 2 and Gibbs, not going to happen
the Gaff to carlton wont ever happen, gaff isnt worth a 2nd round pick. Considering tom mitchell went for pick 14. Gibbs will goto adelaide and carlton will spend picks with GWS for kelly or goto the draft

thats my point, you lose priddis and mitchell, do you think you will lose one of your top midfielders aged 25 for a forward you dont need?

I'd trade Gaff for the right price. Shuey is someone we couldn't afford to lose he does things not many others can. Gaff has limitations and has value

Spot on.
We should be looking to trade our flankers, one of our tall defenders or if we're talking "quality to get quality" then offer up Lycett and hang our hopes on NN and Vardy (high risk / high reward trade).

We don't have much in the way of mids or forwards we can trade without weakening our list.

Consistently average. Mitchell has had more influence in games this year.
He's number 3 in the league for possessions this year. In a midfield that struggles to get the ball (next highest possession getter had more than 100 disposals less over the year) he is a required player. You need inside and outside players. Gaff is by far our most consistent outside player, yet there will only be 3 Eagles playing next year who won more contested possessions than he did this year.

He's number 3 in the league because he runs around and gets cheap possessions ala Gary Ablett Junior but can't use it like him or run around or through opponents. He demands the ball even when he's on his wrong side and doesn't have a right boot more often than not he kicks it up the line to a contest. A couple of years ago he was a damaging player he hurt teams with his field kicking and running ability but he has just lost that hurt factor imo. He is a good footy player not great and the only one of our "top shelf" players that any other team would seriously give us anything decent for that I would be willing to trade as we already have players on our list that can do his job.

Swallow, Rocky, Matera, Motlop.
Not quite Elite/A-graders but still I think any one of them could only add to our make up.
Who should/could we get?
1- Swallow Young enough to fill a needed possy for a good period of time, injuries aside.
2- Rocky is what it is.
3- Matera up and down a bit and really only one position but a required position.
4- Motlop Has the most upside and potential (Like Jetta) but also as consistent.
