Not as easy as you're making it out to be. Just because Jk is double teamed doesn't mean it's Darlings opponent coming off. Most likely scenario is Jk gets number 1 defender and some flanker that is zoning off while JD still gets the second best defender.

Your point is still there in regards to someone being free if Jk has two on him but it's not necessarily Darlings fault. He also had two on him at times on the weekend. The players you should be blaming are Cripps and Hill. Darling will be a lot better for it if Vardy or Petrie play forward ruck next year with Nic as number 1. He just doesn't have the height to be a second tall.
I feel it's also Simpsons fault for constantly letting the opposition have a spare defender . Not only do we minimize our chances of a mark it also allows them to have the overlap out of defence . That's why they just waltz it out all the time .

Knightmare doesn't like his kicking under pressure. He's written this a few times:

The question regarding Clark's game is his kicking. With time and space on the outside, his kicks were often exceptionally well weighted but in traffic his kicks appeared rushed, with his execution by foot far worse in traffic.

Sounds a bit like Yeo - pacy, good overhead, good inside, but skills not great under pressure.

Could still be a good thing though, as we seem to need 2 of Yeo as it is given him being shifted around so much.

Well if that's the case I don't want us anywhere near him.

It would only be adding to our problems

Just curious have you bothered to watch any of the footage of him ???? \_  _/

If you are after elite, sublime, exquisite foot skills then O'Brien is your man.
Don't know who will get the ball to him as he is very outside.

I think we need quality inside extractors first and foremost.

Solid rucks?

A knee reco to Nic, knee surgery and then two shoulder ops to Lycett.

How are our rucks solid?
Because both will be back next year then we have Vardy - NicNat Lycett Vardy would opt as a solid Ruck division regardless.......

First pick draft targets all of these guys might be available at pick 9:

1) Jack Higgins 178cm fwd/mid (Toby Greene like apparently)
2) Andrew Brayshaw 183cm mid (bit like his brother, hard, tough)
3) Sam Hayes 203cm ruck (best ruck available, dual under 18 all australian, learning to play forward also)

We need bigger, hard at it mids. So Brayshaw or Clark types. Not interested in smaller, skillfull types who cant win a contest.

Just read a bit more on Brayshaw and looked at some footage. Wouldnt be unhappy at all getting this kid.

He's a solid unit already, great pace, uses the ball well but what I really like is he keeps his feet, stays in thw contest and knows how to hunt the opposition at stoppages and tackle in close.

If he has the endurance could play a half forward, wing, half back role pretty quickly.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but I dreamt last night that GWS merged with us and we got their midfield, plus pick 3 and Nat Fyfe from a trade they did with the Dockers before folding (can't remember who they gave them in return but it was just one player).

Of course, I also dreamt last night that the zoo had an exhibit that was just random exotic animals wearing people clothes and that I got a job at Officeworks putting up elaborate balloon displays, so my dreams may not be a reliable indicator of player movements.

Bolton has signed up for/and driving the cultural change at Carlton and this is starting to show in the on-field performances. Nisbett still drives our culture and there is no way in hell he would allow Bolton to have his way with the club. Additionally Carlton have Silvani as List Manager who is one of the best while we are taking baby steps with Rawlings with Vozzo clogging up the corridors as his boss.

I do not think Bolton is struggling to provide for his family and hence why would he change?

VOZZO needs to be first sacked....Footy GM, list state is ultimately his responsibility and he's failed badly

No I haven't watched any of the kids this year to be honest.

But I do know that the inside types whose disposal is good in space, but much worse under pressure, seem to be those whose games don't translate to senior footy.

Sheed is a bit like that. Out in space his kicking and decision making is sublime but under pressure he just does the classic Priddis and Scooter immediately-bang-on-boot-around-the-body.

To me it indicates they aren't quick decision makers, and they aren't confident in their ability to work their way out of traffic.

Now that could be completely off the mark when it comes to Clark, and it likely is given I haven't seen him.

But I would like to think that the recruiters prioritise the ability to extract the footy under pressure AND the ability to handle and distribute it cleanly under pressure.

Contrary to your comment, I don't think we should be looking for exquisite footskills on the outside. Not at all. But we should be looking for a player who thrives, not struggles, under physical pressure.

Monocle, What's your thoughts of Hunter Clark with our first? He's performances/stocks are rising by all reports? ,terrier inside and has the leg speed to break away from congestion?. Also your thoughts of Toby Wooller for our second?

Lewy as promised I will give some thought now that the working day is passed and I sit in my study quaffing on a Pinot Noir.

Let me preface this by saying that I am by no means an expert at this, more so an avid draft watcher, who spends way too many hours watching and studying underage football, both live and on tape. I generally watch 3-5 games of the Championships live and then most games of foxtel.
Business has allowed me over the years to watch many games live in Melbourne and catch some TAC games as well.
I know its pretty sad when you plan your business trips around the Under 18 Championships and TAC Cup game scheduling.

Re : Our first pick .

Let me start by saying IMO who will be off the Board come our pick.
In no particular order.

Brander, Rayner, Fogarty D, Dow, Cerra, LDU.

Thats six gone.

Then from that point on its a bit of a crap shoot very much depending on the Clubs needs there will be various and varying priorities.

In the mix for the rest of the first round IMO are the following at this point in time.

Once again in no particular order.

Stephenson, Coffield, O'Brien, Clark, Brayshaw, Higgins, Hayes,Constable, Naughton.

Let me state that every player on that list has some great strengths and some weaknesses.

I will go in the order listed above.

Stephenson: Very talented , very skillfull, very outside very much icing on the cake.
Blistering pace and very good overhead.
Has the ability to hurt you badly in eight minutes of devastating football.
Trouble is he doesn't do it often enough.
I question his short kicking game and his ability to find his own football.

Coffield: If you were after a great leader and a talented negating HBF he would be your first pick. He does play some midfield minutes but hasn't mastered the craft YET for my liking. No question he projects AFL quality, just where he best fits positionally is still to be determined.
Can he become the big bodied mid at 190 cm and 83 kg....... maybe.

O'Brien: Mr Smooth. One of the best kicks in this years cohort by some margin. Ticks a lot of boxes super quick, runs all day ( will blitz the endurance test ) has competed and is ranked by State (Vic ) and Nationally in athletics top 5 in his field for his age group. You want the ball in his hands going forward as he hit targets with monotonous regularity. Very much an outside player and he will need to develop the ability to get his own football otherwise he is in for a tough introduction to AFL. But the dominant left foot is rapier like.

Clark: I think I have already given a pretty detailed critique of him in several posts previously. I think he has a lot of upside.

Brayshaw: Quality Kid . Quality Pick. Probably the most genuine midfielder in this cluster of players. Does most things well in the midfield and is one of the cleverest midfielders in the cohort. Has good separation with out a burst speed and has great vision. Hard at it and very team orientated. But he is only a midfielder and thats not a huge knock on him but its a consideration as he doesn't have any other position that he can play. That said he tick all the boxes you want a midfielder to tick.

Higgins: Has had a terrific year and also has an unbelievable work ethic. Still questions concerning.... is he a small forward first and foremost or will he translate into a player who can be a mid thats also a goal kicker. TBH not a bad question to have to ask of you. He is very impactful and his short game is much better as he doesn't have much of a long game. That said he does all the pressure acts and does them well at 178 and 76 he is a ferocious tackler. I sort of get that you get to pick a player here that ticks two potential boxes small forward / midfielder with one pick. Given we are in need of both, not a bad prospect .

Hayes: This kid frustrates the shit out of me as one day I watch him and see the hype and the next I see a big tall kid that reminds me of Robbie Warnock , meaning if he wasn't 203 cm would we even be rating him. Look no doubt he is athletic but he also looks like a giraffe at times and so "unco".... and yes I know thats a contradiction ... but so is Hayes. Is he a key forward or a ruck man..... at this point in time I think he is a long term ruck prospect that needs five years in the system to develop, he is a handy forward at TAC level but he just doesn't have the strength YET to impact at the next level.

Constable: He is a bit of an enigma in so much as he doesn't have a lot of pace and yet he just manages to find the football in close and then has this uncanny knack of getting to where the ball is going to be next. Very good foot skills and reads the play brilliantly. He is a pretty polished player. At this point in time I want to see more of how he closes the season out as with Sandringham, as he will play finals for sure. I don't mind this kids skill set just his lack of pace worries me.

Naughton: After the Championships I had a late first to early second round grade on him. However his work post Championships at Peel in the Seniors has had me project him higher up the draft draft board. The kid just intercept marks everything that comes his way. He is a scary KPD prospect at just 18 years of age. Now no way to hide his shit left footed kicking style..... yet ..... what can you say its generally effective.
Exciting prospect thats for sure. Looking forward to see how he performs in the WAFL final as this may catapult him up draft boards.

So to answer your question Lewy I do see Clark in the mix for our first but he is by no means my first want at this point in time.

Of the talent I mentioned above I would cross Hayes and Stephenson of my list of WC needs .

I look forward to the rest of the season as I jostle players up and down my draft board.

Front runners for me at this juncture are Brayshaw, Higgins and Clark on a needs basis.

Naughton as a talent intrigues me but not a position of need ........ such is the dilemma of recruiting and drafting.

And apologies if this post is too long.

More on the second pick at a latter point in time.

Lol. Imagine this place if these even happened.

Splooge

It's funny how quickly he's come into the public's attention this year.

In JLT1 this year he led a group of teenagers against our midfield and we got absolutely smashed.

I drafted him into my SuperCoach side a few weeks later because it was clear he was on the verge of domination.

Coffield: If you were after a great leader and a talented negating HBF he would be your first pick. He does play some midfield minutes but hasn't mastered the craft YET for my liking. No question he projects AFL quality, just where he best fits positionally is still to be determined.
Can he become the big bodied mid at 190 cm and 83 kg....... maybe.

So Freo's pick 5 then Monocle?
