My issue was never with not drafting Liam Ryan - for a "professional" to get a beep in the 10's... shows ZERO dedication. my issue is that Bailey Banfield and Dylan Main are two blokes with a lot more potential than Gorter. Either of those guys would be preferable.
There was 0 chance of Main being re listed. Other than port re drafting krakour (who was an established player), i can't think of any other player re drafted by a their old club. Also Main didn't set the world on fire either like ryan did.

10 tackles too. For a fast line breaker who can push forward to kick a goal, 10 tackles is a really good effort. He's obviously not some super outside one way runner
3.9 season average tackles is decent and hopefully he can translate that at the next level.
Yep, Suban was putting a bit of work into him around the stoppages and worked off him quite well so that may be one thing that he needs to work on at the next level. But he certainly moves well in traffic and had some nice moments. Would only improve in an elite, full time setup I would have thought.
to walk away with 24 touches after being tagged by a known AFL tagger and pest is also pretty good. I'd be keen to get a few 2nd rounder this season and pick kelly with one of them.

Ryan didn't "set the world on fire". He proved he was a good WAFL forward, then he proved he had a less 10ish beep. He wasn't prepared for the state combine (i.e. a job interview). IT's a major red flag. Main was averaging 27 possies a game as a 189cm mid form round 20-QF as a 21yo. Yes, guys getting re-listed are slim, but that's just silly imho - if the lights switched on, then it's a different issue. This year he's been 20+ possy mid all season. We're looking for big mids.

Someone mentioned Jaksch - we've never had issues developing KPD's. I'd rather give Lamb a go at KPD than bring Jaksch in.

Dunno what setting the world on fire is, if a 19 year old small forward bags 40 goals in 16 goals from no where in his first season. Ultimately its his professionalism that let him down. If he was more professional he would have got a gig at an AFL club due to his class an X factor. A lot of clubs would have taken his poor fitness and looked to build it up if they knew he was a professional individual that takes training and diet seriously. He's also a type that doesn't come around too often.

I like how you picked a random 5 game patch to justify Dylan Main be re drafted. Main has already been in an AFL system without doing much and those sort of players really need to go back and dominate the lower levels if they want to get picked. So far he hasn't and hence why the talk of him being a potential mature ager was very minimal this time last year. even tho a bigger bodied mids are one of our needs, there's so many average ones in the system and main hasn't shown too much to show that he would do well at the next level.

I agree on your view of Jaksch.

Bottom line is, if you're getting sub 12 beep tests then you're not getting drafted.
Cameron Raynor supposedly is only running 11's, but he may go #1. I think things can be overlooked if you've got other elite attribute to make up for it (ie speed/agility/goal scoring ability) or you're a good bloke who speaks well.

Ryan has the talent; everyone knows it- he just didn't seem to have the desire or attitude to improve.

But they don't test the beep test at the combines now anyway, so that may work in his favour. 68 goals in 20 weeks is impressive and may sway a team to back themselves in to get him to take that next step.

Sorry mate didn't realise I quoted you

Isn't that what the rookie list is for though...Take a punt on potential/talent in the hope of development?
Yes but the basics like work ethic and attitude have to be right first. Clearly if you get a beep test that low your attitude is shithouse. We aren't freo. "hey mate you might not want to train but would you like a spot on our list anyway? We would like you to try a bit harder though please."
How would that give the kid incentive to improve? What sort of message does that send to ever other player in our squad? More likely they would have told him that they might be interested if he can improve his attitude etc.

I would have thought the chance to make the senior list and play AFL would be more than enough incentive.
You don't really know until you put someone in that environment as to how they'll react...We rookied a pudgy really tall bloke from up north who ran an absolutely shocking beep test. He turned out alright.

Ryan was a young kid from the country playing his first season (in which he kicked 51 goals from 20 games) after moving down from Geraldton, his fitness was never going to be AFL standard until he'd had a decent pre-season or two under his belt. A recruiting department with half a brain (and whose team is seriously lacking in crumbing small forwards) would have realised this and having watched him last year also realised that he was a talented kid who could be a great player with the right coaching and development. Instead of taking the risk (which is what the rookie list should be about) we got scared off by a beep test result and decided to take the most uninspiring selection we could muster up. No doubt someone else will take him this year and we'll get to watch him run around in another clubs colours, most likely destroying our small defenders with bags of over the back goals.

For those trying to work out who is going where & what other clubs needs are.

In short we are not the only ones looking for mids - from AFL website here. N.B article is written by collection of writers.

Lions - need more midfield depth. They loaded up at last year's draft and will look to do the same this time. Also desperately need a quick, pressuring small forward.
Carlton -
lack of depth in the midfield proved costly in several games this season and they will be looking for a couple of bigger bodies to support Cripps and Ed Curnow.
Pies - A quality key defender such as uncontracted Crow Jake Lever would be ideal, and young Darcy Moore also needs big-man help in attack.
Dockers - Finding a replacement for Matthew Pavlich was never going to be easy. Cam McCarthy, Shane Kersten, Matt Taberner and Brennan Cox have been handy but the Dockers need a power forward to build around.
Suns - need hard-ball winning midfielders that can also spread. They are starting to look thin in the middle of the ground and need some more top-end talent in there.
Hawks - New stars to emerge after the exits of Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis, Brad Hill, Luke Hodge and Josh Gibson since the end of the 2016 season. The lack of a first-round pick this year – it was used to help lure Jaeger O'Meara – makes that more difficult, but don't be shocked if the Hawks find a way to get another one. That may rely on giving up a player of significance. (NOT RELEVANT TO OUR CONVERSATION AS THEY TRADED AWAY THEIR FIRST PICK)
Dees - Out-of-contract Adelaide star Jake Lever is high on the club's wishlist and the Demons are growing increasingly confident that he is attainable. Melbourne is also looking to further bolster its midfield depth in the upcoming draft period.
Roos - Dustin Martin would have been huge, but Josh Kelly would be a nice consolation prize (or even Devon Smith). Barring that, the Roos look OK in the key posts at either end, but would love some more midfield class. That may need to come via the draft, if the Kelly raid is also unsuccessful.
Saints - An injection of speed and class in the midfield. There are plenty of grunt players around the footy but St Kilda needs other players to offer a point of difference.
Doggies - If they're to contest again, the Dogs need to regain the hunger that took them to the flag. Injecting some better ball users into the line-up is also a must. A ruckman and key defender wouldn't go astray either.

Liam Ryan played part of a season for EF before going home ....Subiaco then gave him another opportunity so he has had a few goes at playing WAFL . Subiaco have a fantastic environment for producing and making players , Jarrad Schofield would walk into any AFL organisation if in fact he was interested which seems not at the moment .

Whoever picks up Liam Ryan one thing is for certain their media training guys are going to have their work cut out for them.

Heard him on 6PR midweek being interviewed by Simon Beaumont. To say it was a tough listen is an understatement...

The problem with your post is that you don't have to be Nostradamus to figure out you'll be right. Worrying really.

You sure about this? Because there's only one Liam Ryan listed as having played WAFL since 1994 and he's only credited with games for Subiaco reserves and league. In fact it looks like EF passed on him -

Well said. This sums things up very nicely.
