thoughst on billy hartung?

out if contract. At the right price he wouldn't be too bad. if we can muster up a few second rounders, i wouldn't mind getting him. The thought of working under mitchell might entice him.

averging 22 touches this year and has plenty of pace and a huge tank.
Not worth a 2nd rounder, routinely cops flak from hawks supporters for being soft so I wouldn't bother unless he was very cheap. If clarko can't turn him into a quality player, I don't see how we could. Plus he only averages 4 contested possessions a game, not the type of player we need.

Don't get me wrong I think he's a good player, does he improve our midfield much more than someone like Tim Kelly would though?
Id be aiming for both. Tim Kelly seems to be playing mostly on ball i guess. it might not translate to AFL but at least he should be playing an inside/role like sheed has been doing this season. Hartung on the other hand on id getting to play on a wing.

like i said in a previous post. we need to be aiming to build a versatile midfield group. That means we cannot just afford to recruit contested mids.
Hartung has a good mix of speed and endurance brings us a POD as we have no player like that on our list. Hartung is still fairly young and a couple of years off his peak so there's still a bit of development in him. could argue he's on par with Jared Polec early in his career and now look at polec doing well for port. Jetta will be 29 and we still don't know if he is part of our future so getting in someone like hartung now isnt bad. If we can muster up a couple of second rounders then i wouldn't mind it.

we got a bit of pace in the back line with Yeo duggan, nelson and shep (if we can him to attack a bit). Then having hartung, T. Kelly and jetta in the wings would make us a pretty quick side. That said we still need to get a few contested mids.

hartung as a mid/late second rounder surely worths the price tag.

Thinking about it some more if Gaff goes he'd definitely be worth a second rounder

Stevo from talking footy saying Gaff available at the right price ....which is awful really unless he is keen to go home which I hope not .

Would be disappointing to say the least .

he should be a must if Gaff goes but id still get him regardless. He'd complement gaff on an opposite wing.

Nah Gaff has become a popular part of the team and they are saying Gaff being the trade to help us on the rebuild , I would have thought Gaff would be one of the few established consistent players that the rebuild will be build around .

As Biggie said ....we would say with Essendon most likely interested their first pick plus Myers .

Anyone know more bout the Gaff story? I'm just very surprised WC would be willing to let him go...i still think of him as a gun and he's only 25.
Midfield isn't exactly a strong suit for the Eagles so why let him go? Is it because he wants out anyway and they want to cash in on him now rather than next year when he's a FA?

Sounds like we are in for a rebuild and Gaffy is going to help with that ...so dont expect to pay unders , sounds like it needs to be a good deal or he stays long term IMO .

Is there anything concrete that we actually are considering trading him or just a couple of vague rumours?

I was thinking of trading masto else where and get that pick and use that pick and Hartung. That said imo masto will get. Third rounder. Maybe we get a decent compo for emac and we use that to get Hartung.
Best bet to get rid of Masto is to do a deal with Gold Coast. They have picks 2,19,22,24,33,37.I doubt they will just go all for young guys.they do need some experience.Pick 33 or 37 would be handy especially if we want some young talent and Tim Kelly.

Good chance that Gaff trade rumour is something like Jack darling trade rumour last year. Gaff like Jack is highly rated and is a very good mid when fit and i doubt the club would look to trade him. As someone posted Gaff was the best two way runner this year and in 2015 he actually killed it in that department as well. If Gaff gets the right training when it comes to tackling, his two way work would be elite.

The prospect of a top 10 pick (and potentially a bit extra) for Gaff is tempting although I prefer not to tarnish our generally good record for retaining our half decent interstate players. I don't much like the risk of setting a precedent. I like our culture of two way loyalty.

Dunno what setting the world on fire is, if a 19 year old small forward bags 40 goals in 16 goals from no where in his first season. Ultimately its his professionalism that let him down. If he was more professional he would have got a gig at an AFL club due to his class an X factor. A lot of clubs would have taken his poor fitness and looked to build it up if they knew he was a professional individual that takes training and diet seriously. He's also a type that doesn't come around too often.

I like how you picked a random 5 game patch to justify Dylan Main be re drafted. Main has already been in an AFL system without doing much and those sort of players really need to go back and dominate the lower levels if they want to get picked. So far he hasn't and hence why the talk of him being a potential mature ager was very minimal this time last year. even tho a bigger bodied mids are one of our needs, there's so many average ones in the system and main hasn't shown too much to show that he would do well at the next level.

I agree on your view of Jaksch.

WRT Main, I'm not sure why he was delisted. He was always a project and I thin we gave up a year early. i believe he's playing wing and his numbers seem to be good to very good in a good SF team. The 5 games were those that were leading up to the finals, where he "got it". I recall someone (ER?) saying he looked impressive in those games. Who knows.

Tony Notte became a very good KPD, surprised no one gave him another chance. He refused to be moved back for development and thus was delisted.

then your idea of main becomes a bigger bodied mid becomes redundant. a bigger bodied mid only becomes valuable if they can really dominate on the inside.

Problem with Notte was/is that he struggled to put on enough mass to be an AFL kpd. He's listed as 80kgs but i suppose he weights between 85kgs to 90kgs. is not big enough for a bloke thats 196cm and would be found out at the next level.

Notte would have been more a third tall than a KPD though.

Love watching him play.
gotta admit that i have notte seen him play recently.

Tall third talls are useless tbh. players like Yeo make the best third talls. even a guy like shep goes well on guys around the low 190cm mark.
