With Duggan Sheed Partington inside mids are covered better than quick line breaking mids that can start there careers as a nimble forward .
Out of those I think Sheed and Parto are inside mids. More types like Venables who can take a mark, break lines and win contested ball are the types we should be going for. Extractors are good (Priddis), but they are less effective once the ball is cleared or during a fast break/slingshot. I think Duggan is an inside/outside mid, I doubt if he will ever be a true inside mid. He was originally a HBF rotating into the middle when we drafted him.

Definitely agree that we need to draft a key forward in the 1st round, unless we get really lucky with a later pick, especially with JK obviously getting older and some uncertainty with the young KPF's we have developing including with their lack of height. Another KPF will also allow Darling (or the younger prospects) to play as a 3rd tall instead.
Did you see Mathew Allen play on 7wafl . Clunked a few good marks and is starting to cover a lot more ground . Kennedy types would be hard to come by .

So crazy idea. Joe Daniher is out of contract end of the season. Essendon have our biggest name coaching them, how about we take their biggest family name away from the club.

With a greatly increasing salary cap would a long term back ended contract to joe daniher be worth it?

Daniher is an annoying one because he can have games where he looks like an out and out star but then he can also, at times, look like an absolute spud of the highest order (especially his goalkicking).

Can't see it happening tbh.

Yeah he was pretty good, certainly gives me a lot more confidence that he could make it, hopefully he can keep it up. Still would nice to draft another perhaps taller KPF though since neither Allen or Waterman aren't particularly big.

I would like to see Vardy spend time at CHF once Lycett is back. The training sessions I saw over the summer had him doing ruck work given we knew he was to spend the first part of 2017 in the ruck. During breaks of play I have seen him with the midfield/ruck discussions so more time knowing the forward structures would be interesting.

It will require some imagination (and maybe another year) and also assume that both Venables and Rioli live up to expectations but I like the following line up:

HF Darling Vardy Venables
FF Hill Kennedy Rioli

LeCras or Hill would vie for the pocket role and Cripps does his part in midfield rotations and less defensive forward.

Vardy seems very lumbering for some reason, do you believe that the club got him to have a pretty big weights program over the summer to prepare his body to endure rucking? For me he might have to cut back to regain some mobility if he is going to play CHF.

Paying big bucks for an inconsistent forward? Sounds a lot like Tippett.

Would definitely avoid.

Can't be bothered finding it but there was a post going around on the draft board last year that looked at where quality key forwards were taken in their draft years. The conclusion was that you really need to use a first rounder, as very few late draft/rookies become anything better than 2nd or 3rd best in their sides.

Not necessarily, Taylor Walker and Ben Brown are both in the top 10 for goal kickers at the moment
Taylor Walker - Pick 75
Ben Brown - Pick 47

Again, you like to selectively pick things to make an arguement but like to leave out key information.

Such as that Walker was a nsw scholarship player.

Ben brown ok but he is one out of how many that have been drafted late? If you keep looking for a gem in draft and base everything on that, u will be waiting a lot.

Yeah I mentioned this earlier today, there are obviously exceptions to the trend but on the whole the first round is where most quality KPFs come from.

Taylor walker was a nsw academy pick for Adelaide which meant a different pathway. The truth is he would have been a top 10 pick otherwise. The crows spotted him young from outside the normal pathways.

Who's arguing? It's called having a discussion, which is kind of the point of a discussion forum.

I think the Walker situation came up, but yeah sounds like he was highly rated and went cheap, same with Tom Hawkins at 41 via the old father/son system (what a steal!).

Ben Brown seems to be the exception to the rule.

There's quite a few small forwards amongst the top goal kickers, more than I expected when I was looking through, sign of the times I guess

I think that while quality smalls (Betts, Greene, Grey, etc.) are important to their sides, forward lines need a very good tall forward to lead the attack, provide structure and stretch AFL-level defenses.

The Bulldogs stand out as an exception, but they haven't looked dominant up forward so far this year (and to be honest, for a big chunk of last year).

Agree, structurally it's important to have a quality tall forward, just seems like a lot of teams are actually generating a fair amount of their goals from smalls and midfielders these days.

Wesley? Doesn't bode well for our future father/son pick. If Gov Jnr wants his son to have half a brain and display any sort of intent/spirit on a football field he would do well to stay clear of Wesley. Trust me, been there, done that. The place is a shambles at the moment.

Only had the 4 lads drafted this year , best of all WA schools , equal best of any Aust school. Clearly not the place to be
