Did DV sign a 2 or 3 year contract? First year would always be tough leaving friends and family but I feel heading home after season 1 you realise people have moved on in their life, not that they're not your friends, but you're doing different shit and they got to do theirs. You'd realise you have more/closer friends at the club than you thought you did before and would look forward to it more.

Automatic 2 year contract for draftees

No mention that he's extended it to 3 at any stage

I was stoked when we picked Venables in the draft, thought he was the type of player we needed. I have no reason to make shit up or create rumours.

We might have seen the last of Emac, trade bait?
Not really worth much now. Reckon he would be worth a packet of chips at best. Schofield maybe two packets, which is a shame because Schofield would definitely be getting games with other AFL clubs. I reckon Schofield could get shopped around at the end of the year to VIC teams.

Geelong - his old home town could use him. Good club and good bloke

Out of contract at the end of season. Like Browny last year it might be hard to trade a free agent.
Yeh pretty difficult.

Mackenzie is on 600k so even if he some how snags 1 year deal you'd imagine he'd go down to about 200-250k so we'll have some more cash to play with.

Start of year our FA list was:

West Coast
Sam Butler
Mark LeCras
Eric Mackenzie
Matt Priddis

Ezy is the only RFA of that bunch. We could keep him even if someone else wanted him, so we do have some currency for trade.

Why didn't we just go SPP!

Why would we pick the blindly obvious well suited pick? We love finding ways of ****ing up the trade and draft period. Even if Venables works out, it was a strange decision as we took on so much risk for what didnt seem much upside.

There's always some assumptions behind hypotheticals, and I'll start with WCE finish 5th and Adelaide finish 1st giving us an average 4 picks difference in each round, or 14 between our latter round pick and their earlier round. I'm also assuming we're trading out JD, who has plateaued, and trading in Mitch Mc, who has potential and will assume JD's role in best 22. Assuming JD, by his public persona would appear to be somewhat like Buddy in that he'd prefer Sydney or Melbourne to Adelaide or Brisbane.

So how do we win? I've got two scenarios: firstly we obain McGovern and 1st or second round pick upgrades, or secondly we obtain McGovern and another best 22 player.

What can we afford to give away? Anyone who is not best 22, next two years, and Venables. There'd be a lot of contention over who those 22 are, and if current ruck trends continue, Scott Lycett might not be that best 22 player in two years time. He's also a South Aussie which might be appealing to the Cows. Admittedly, if we lose Lycett, we lose ruck depth.

So who wants an experienced best 22 2nd / 3rd tall forward type. I'd say nearly every Victorian club except St Kilda and North, and in NSW GWS are flush. Collingwood are shit traders, Hawthorn don't have a first round pick.

Trade 1: Darling to Geelong for Mitch Duncan.
Trade 2: Lycett and 2nd Round to Adelaide for McGovern and 1st Round.

Gains: Embley style winger, pick upgrade
Losses: 2nd ruckman

It's a hypothetical though, and I don't know nearly enough about opposition teams to know their wants and how they value our players.
Do you think Darling would be attractive to a club like GC? I thought Duncan playing predominantly on-ball for the Cats. My hypothetical:

Trade 1: Darling and pick 28 to GC for pick 8 + 21
Trade 2: Lycett and 21 to Adelaide for McGov + 18

Gains: pick gain and upgrade (14, 28 to 8, 14, 18)
Losses: 2nd ruckman

Thoughts? Do you think Schofield would interest the Suns? Or could he be added onto your trade to Geelong for a pick in addition to Duncan?

I think that's playing down the risk with SPP, who had questionable disposal and probably lacked the production history to be taken too early. Even still, he could be a bust. Only time will tell.

To an outsider like me GC is an absolute mystery as to where they are going with their list. Up front they have the greatest forward in history and 2-metre-Peter and not much besides that, so there would definitely be interested in an AFL experienced goal kicking forward. I left them out because of the assumption JD wouldn't OK going to Queensland. I'm also not sure he gets you a top 10 pick on his own.

I used Duncan as the club tends to target expat WA players in their trade dealings (Stenglein, Chick, Yeo, Cripps, Wellingham) and the same holds for Mitch McG. Either way, I'd rate Duncan next season to be the 4th best midfielder on our list behind Shuey, Gaff, and Yeo (assuming Mitchell retires). Do we get someone like that for JD straight up? Hell I'm questioning my own trade now.

If Schoey's going anywhere it's back to his family in Victoria. His new wife is a Perth girl, albeit a model (hello Twiggy), so she may be keen to stay and Will might be another Pavlich/Waters-style WA convert. They are also good friends with the Browns (Mitch and Shae) who are now based in Melbourne, so a trade to Geelong wouldn't be a stretch.

Stats for Dustin Martin's first season in 2010 are very similar to SPP's this year thus far. SPP's DE is slightly better, Dusty had a couple more kicks. Whether that is a product of Richmond being entirely shit in 2010 and Port being semi-decent this season (ie quality of team-mates), indeed time will tell.

The SPP versus DV debate is a bit like the early days of the Judd trade - West Coast are clearly going to lose it in the short term.

Thankfully you can't judge draftees that quickly. Even from year 1 to year 2, a lot of players regress or stand up. It's a freaking mishmash.

Gov is not a lead up forward. I watched him at Claremont prior to being drafted and he is a clunking mark. If you want him in attack, then we go back to the helicopter kicks and hope he clunks them. Allen, Darling and Vardy will deliver more a lead up style FF. Junior Mac is more in the lead up role and that is the way the game is going up front.

No chance GC trade pick 8 and downgrade their early 2nd rounder by 7 spots for Darling. Bit of wishful thinking there.

If legit re DV then I'm sad..

Why? He has at least 2 years to get over it.

Once he bangs a few chicks, finds a perth girlfriend, plays a few games, it will all we well.

Like it how people think that what he thinks now is the be all and end all. He is an 18 year old boy out of home for first time.

Most rumours by a significant margin are false. Requires multiple different sources to be legit. This one isn't even direct.

I don't actually think SPP will be a bust, I was more referring to the perception of him pre-draft. I think he will be a good player, but I think Venables will be a very good player. Hopefully it's with us.
