They can't, you need to make use 2 first round picks in a 4 year period, so both us and the dockers need to make a first round selection either this year or next.

Pretty sure it can be approved by the afl... like they did for Geelong and hawthorn the last few years

Can you see the Dees agreeing to that trade?

Uncontracted Baltic for a contracted Hogan? With 2 unknown 1st rounders involved!

Wonderful. If Hogan has asked to come home sure, but I haven’t seen any news of that.
Depends how he's going I guess, if he does ask to come home then I could see them accepting something along those lines but it'd need to be high first round picks and probably a decent young player coming back from the dockers who's name isn't Balic.

Hawthorn's was a second rounder and Geelong can still comply. It's all a bit murky anyway, the AFL just interprets the rules to suit themselves, the question is are they going to be willing to help Fremantle take a major piece of a Vic club off them? I think the answer to that is no.

To drop out of the 8 again at the last minute? Lever's good but he's not that great, certainly not enough to elevate Melbourne to premiership contender status.

Not sure on that one ...they have a lot of bases covered and were impressive against us at Subi last season if they build again in 2018 they could be top 6 .

Petracca Viney Lever Hogan Gawn Hunt Tyson Lewis is a solid top 8 players to build on

They've got some good young players and they probably will make the 8 next year but they're a way off contending imo. It was more a dig at Lever than anything, I think he's being overrated by the media.

Totally agree on Lever. However, Melbourne have had top picks for years now, they have got an impressive young side together with a few older heads, ( Lewis, Vince , Jones etc ) I think they have more talent than Richmond and with another pre season into their young guns, they are definitely a chance, as are about 10 other sides, as the Tiges and Bullies have proved the last couple of seasons.

Sorry for the intrusion ... but we have been through this joke of a rule on our board a few times, and the 4 year time period is not in play yet ... and the penalty isn't a penalty at all - you just cannot trade future picks the next season. It's laughable.

This article shows some more of the details ...

tanking does work particularly when it kills your culture for years and the draft rewards you handsomely

The lesson for us is to not be too short term focused in building our list

Jay Clark now saying Hogan has met with Demons officials and wants to stay at Melbourne .

That'd be funny. Meets personally with Fyfe then the next day he calls Demon's officials and says "I er I'm sorry, definitely don't want to go to Freo."

Fyfe's own current playing group doesn't even like him, not sure why you'd use him to entice other players over.

Mmm, a season at Freo with huge travel and no finals in sight OR 18 games in Victoria and a guarantee that all home finals will be at the MCG. Such a tough choice !!

God I love this national comp.

This might seem a bit callous, but if Hogan didn't ask for a trade back home when his father was dying then I don't know why he would after he has passed away
Plenty of reasons - like filling the matriarchal role, supporting his mum, wanting to be closer to sibblings , feeling remote, etc

I was living away from Perth when family members were dying and there is a pull back to the family nest.

Agree, That's why I would like to see Gaff traded to the Saints for 8 and Acres. But it appears Gaff loves the club and wants to stay, which is obviously a good thing, not too many want to leave. Wonder why that is ? Rosa and Sinclair both wanted to stay as well.

His mum lives in Melbourne.

And yet we think the natural improvement in duggan, nelson and co will help us improve.Melbourne have a far more talented list than us and younger too
