So really it comes down to our ability to properly identify and develop talent. Throwing a Nelson or Cole type in as steak knives would do more damage to redeveloping the squad than the benefit of getting in a player who isn't an A grader anyway IMO. If the kid expresses a desire to leave then sure but you don't push them to get back a stop gap type player.

2018 will be pretty revealing on the mindset of the coaching group. Priddis, Petrie and Mitchell retired. Wellingham, Masten and Hill on the outer or delisted. There's 25%+ of the B22 from the past 2 season available to the kids who want it badly enough.

Hopefully we play the kids in their proper positions, get a true reading on their ability at the level and with the return of Naitanui can pinch as as many games as we lose from playing a younger side.

Nelson, Cole, Karpany, Mutimer, Venables, Rioli + whatever we acquire during the off season. It could be an exciting season. A big youth injection could be just the thing to revitalise the older players.
Throw Partington, Waterman, the recently acquired Ah Chee, and possibly still Lamb, into that list of young players. I'm guessing that only about half of them will make it, but I suppose we'll never know if we don't try.

Of course, you can't play all 10 of them at once. That would be going too far the other way.

Yeah I know. Just a hypothetical.
Appreciate the hypothetical, it's an interesting discussion point. We need established midfielders, we'd be gunning hard for Sloane as a minimum. Gov is a star and his position is so vital to the way the game is played right now.

If it wasn't going to be Sloane it'd need to be at least two first rounders.

I think a few of you are underestimating the importance of Gov to our team. Without him we would have lost a few more games this year. Saved our arse a few times. Without a dominant midfield we get our drive from half back, unfortunately Gov's kicking was a little off this year and he was always under extreme pressure trying to make the right decision because our midfielders just were not keeping the pressure on ! They say , no one is off the table, But Gov is OFF the table in my mind.

Identifying Nelson as talent? He was our 3rd round pick. So not bad for that pick. What is worrying is Lamb was our 2nd round.

Basically what they get for Lever plus something else.

If Gov snr asked to go Id jump at it. One of the few ways we could rejuvenate the list by losing only one player and one thing we are good at is drafting and development of tall backs.

If we had 22 Govs we would win for sure. He is good at ground level and could be a dominant midfielder. Clearly CHB is his best position and the 21 other Govs would agree.

Don't get me wrong. I think Nelson has the tools to have a very good AFL career, it is why I sponsored him. Unfortunately break-out year turned into break down year.

Our drafting in terms of identifying talent has been much better since Simpson got here, we just had bad luck with Cavka and Waterman's issues. Even Tom Lamb could still make it IMO. Our development is still suspect and I am predicting our list turnover will actually help us proceed with improving that much more rapidly.

East Perth is a bunghole arrangement for our youth. Praying for a standalone side ASAP!

Nelson had a good start to the year and the broken hand seemed to hold him back. I would be wanting to back him in and as many of said, one of the few with some campaigner spirit which our side is so so lacking. He just needs a couple of mates to join him.

He has some genuine speed and showed signs during the pre-season of being given inside midfield work (he thrived at a couple of training drills based on extraction) and he needs a sustained run. Emphasis over the summer - get that tank up and keep your feet.

He played mid for us last year for a bit through the middle of the year and did well, especially against Freo but was then dropped inexplicably and has been played at half back since. It baffles me when we are screaming for young mid talent that they dont play him there more often.

I have my fingers crossed that the 25% change in the Best 22 is going to provide the opportunities to the young guys that they sorely need to develop. Ah Chee, Nelson, Venables and Partington playing midfield minutes next year should be good to watch.

I hope so, but i get the horrible feeling Masten will play all year coz we cant have the kids learning too much too fast.. ;)

Trade radio had an interview with Petrie saying we will prob look at needing another ruck to develop over the next 3-4 years and of course the midfield/forward.

Cal tomey then went on to say Venables is that powerful mid/forward we are looking for and that we should also draft Higgins would fit us perfectly.

Think it has always come down to we were contending in 2016/17 so they wanted to play more experience.

2018 we are expected to fall down the ladder so i think the club will at least gives these players an extended run... I hope.

The Gov talk has come from some murmurs yesterday that Adelaide want him.

And they are free to make an offer, just like we are free to laugh at it.

Trouble with Tomey's little gem of advise about HIGGINS being a great fit ,is that there is little chance he will be still on the board come pick # 13.
While I agree he would be a good fit for us , it's an unrealistic notion.
