Meh Mitchell and Priddis weren't that good this year just gone. No reason to think that others, sheed, redden can't improve and cover a lot of what they gave us, and Nic Nat bumps everyone up 10%. Can't underestimate the difference to our mids from going from vardy/Petrie to Nic Nat/lycett in the ruck.

Hahaha, Like I said before. We have a gun list.

They certainly have some quality players all over the park now. Only question mark is on the backline.

Mids - Ryder, Rockliff, Wines, Boak, Polec, Ebert, SPP

Forwards - Gray, Wingard, Dixon, Motlop

Backs - Westhoff? Jonas? Unnamed crab?

I think the only thing that's going to be stopping Port from climbing the ladder now is poor coaching. And the lack of Chris Marsden.

Don't think Geelong fans are going to be that upset losing Motlop, freakish talent but goes missing often. Rocky is solid inside mid but they have a few of those.
Shocking backline. Forward line hit and miss as well.

Interesting times for them.

Port are clearly topping up to win a flag, however Rocky and Motlop aren't really the players required to take that step.

Will be interesting to see how they go next season.

Will be interesting.

Funny that the 2 guys they have signed as FA were total trade poison last year, their clubs couldn't give them away.

Knocks on both of them but rarely do you score unmatched RFAs without some grey area with what you are getting.

NN will help for sure but he won't cover the loss of Mitchell and Priddis, I know all players have to retire at some point and it was time but they are still better than what we have going forward with.

We won’t miss Mitchell and Priddis much. If anything they made us too slow and predictable this year. I almost forgot - do you have any other reason? The midfield is not going to be any worse or any better than what it was this year.

Ebert, Wines, Boak, SPP, Hartlett, Polec with Gray and Wingard spending time in there is plenty deep, plus Ryder rucking to them. I get the feeling they're trying to turn Wingard into that more polished/creative mid going forward anyway, not sure if they prefer him as a forward. Obviously will help with depth adding Rocky, but not too sure it gives them that point of difference compared to the type of mids they already have.
Boak and Hartlett spent significant time at half back. Grey and wingard significant time forward. When that happened they had crabs in the middle. Now they can have rocky and Grey switching between forward and inside mid and wingard and motlop switching between outside mids and forward.

I try to avoid following port to closely but to be fair to their backline they did have the second best defensive record in the league this year.

Again I didn’t say we would fare worse. With the list some of you think we have I actually expect us to rise sharply up the ladder.

People underestimating Port's backbone here, lots of good young talent which is why Trengove couldn't get a game. They've done well this trade period, but there in a different position to us so I'm glad we're going the draft rather than spending big on free agents.

For sure, but even then we should have by far the biggest cap space in the AFL next year. Us and I think port and the crows were the only clubs to not add automatic increases to deals proportionate to the cap increase. Plus Priddis, Mitch, Butler, Giles retiring should free up atleast 1.5-1.7 mil. Mackenzie, Lecras on decreased contracts should save us around 600k and Wellingham whether retiring or taking a pay decrease will save us a further 200-400k.

All up right there you're looking at 2.3 mil - 2.7 mil from retirements and new contracts, plus 2.5 mil in new cap space. I assume Gov and Yeo will be in the ballpark of 800k each which should sap up about 800k-1 mil max, Gaff should get an increase of 2-300k, Duggan should get another 2-300k. Plus Shuey probably copped a 300k increase in his latest contract. That totals around 1.9 mil~ for new contracts next year + shuey

Obviously this is very rough estimates but you get the jist, overall we should still have 3 mil + still lying around. We really should be making a big play at someone next year with all that spare cash, even if we have to pay a little bit of overs as this is the time there ever was one, where we can afford to splurge and overpay a little bit.
The thing that is missing from all of that is the cap floor which is $622,500 less than the cap until 2022. So that's the maximum amount of cap space we can have at the conclusion of the 2018 season, meaning for all the 2019 contracts and beyond if we sit at the floor in 2018 we've got that $622k wiggle space, plus whatever those big 4 players are currently earning, plus whatever retirements / delistings happen, minus the extra players that we need to make up the list spots.

So all that spare money for 2018 doesn't help us for contracts that need to renew come 2019.

Our big off-season for cap space is this one. Same with the Cows and Port. The Cows have thrown money at McGov Jr and Lever, and Port has signed Motlop and Rockliff with their spare cash. We've done... not a whole lot thus far aside from Shuey's renewal. Which probably means Mackenzie and LeCras are on similar deals to 2017, because we're not going to reach the floor any other way. Perhaps Ah Chee's deal will be significantly front loaded (if he makes it here).

You can't use salary cap space if no one wants to come...

There are holes (some very big) to fill in the list no doubt. Some of our regulars have no real trade value - we can’t sell them because nobody is buying. I’d rather we keep our draft picks and draft kids with potential than overpaying for a Shane Kersten or a Cam MCarthy type.

Can quite easily front end the contracts and then that spare cap is brought forward a year or 2.

Still have to pay to the floor...

This is getting kind of circular.
So? That will be done, but all the space that may or may not exist doesn't matter if can't get anyone in. If get ah Chee could front load if we are actually under, but I doubt we are that far under anyway. Mitchell wouldn't have been on massive dollars and priddis. Who knows.
