Not sure I get all the JJ love. We have Yeo and Nelson as our attacking HBFers. Yeo is not a midfielder despite all the hope we have.

JJ is fast and attacks the ball but so are Yeo and Nelson. We also have Tom Cole coming back from injury over pre-season, Rotham who is very quick and Watson who is super elusive but prone to get ahead of himself and blaze away (still learning his craft but looks the goods and DE is probably not far off JJ).

If JJ wants $800k and Doggies want our 1st rounder, walk away please.

He's 25 this year, if that changes anything. He will also be older than both Redden and Wellingham, and even Tyson Stenglein had been at the point they were traded to the club. Born same year as Gaff, Cripps, Darling, McGovern, and Lycett, with Lycett being closest in age to him.

The 2011 draft class is in their 7th season of AFL footy, and most don't last longer than 12 years so we'd be getting the last 5 years of JJ's career, when he is at peak value. Is the club at, or nearing peak compete in the next few seasons? Probably not, so losing a 1st rounder for JJ doesn't seem like a good bet.

If we end up with pick 13 I'd love to see us take another 200 gamer a la Bunga.
Redden was 24 and turned 25 2months after we got him. JJ will turn 24 a month after the trade period. Should get 5-6 years of him.

1. Free agent.
2. Is current coached by LeCras' former coach.
3. Kicked 12 on them.
4. Had recent success in recycling a couple of players (because they were forced to after they turned half their list into drug cheats).
They already have established smalls doing well. Green probably not as good as the other two but is much younger than lecca is.

I actually want Nelson to become an inside mid. Think we need his mongrel and toughness as well as his speed in there. Also love how he is becoming the sort that's becoming hard to tackle(except when he doesn't look around lol).

Another HBF? Never change West Coast.
Surely he could play as a wingmen and even as midfield rotation. Didn't he also play as hff at times last year? Don't want him for $800k but if we can get him for much less then he will be an asset for us with his speed.

I think he will be an inside mid - I expect that he will need another couple of years in defence with some midfield rotations. He has worked on his endurance and another couple of preseasons to get the last 10% of his tank plus another 40 games will see the full arrival of Lord Nelson.

I'd be tempted to try it now tbh. With our contested issues he might actually be pretty handy. He doesn't just attack the ball but he also goes hard at the man. He also brings manic pressure and thats what we need as we easily let opposition stroll through stoppages.

He was strong over the pre-season and went well in their extracting drill. There again so did Dougan and he has not been that effective in 2017. Agree on trialling him at centre stoppages and in free play. Looking at how the GWS mids burnt off our mids, he probably is worth a go in the midfield.

I did groan on Sunday when we had Mitchell, Priddis and Hutchings in at a couple of centre clearances. And we wonder why we start our rebound inside our 50 m defensive arc!

Nelson was a pretty handy inside Mid as a junior.

And now by some sort of miracle he all of a sudden has speed.

He should be put in the Midfield and left there !!

My eyes may have been deceiving me but Nelson definitely slid up the ground a bit on the weekend. He looked pretty gassed a few times running back defensively so he has work to do aerobically.

Those GWS boys were phenomenal...they ran all day, like Gaff but with pace too.

I wish we had a direct line to a man standing in the coaches box that would give Simmo a slap anytime this happens.

Yes. I agree with you agreeing with me.

Yeah, I agree. But there's always the school of though that Lecca might actually off something different than the other smalls as a target moreso than a crumber. Let's not forget he's still ranked equal 21st on the goalkickers list atm which would be good for third on Essendon.

I still lol at the graphic from last year where rated Nelsons athletic traits from his draft combine results. Everything was average or below average. I just don't think Nelson found pace but he has just been given the freedom to take the game on. Prior to this season. He was more hesitant and took the safe options. He also worried more about his man than attacking.

Gaff no slouch speed wise but those guys are at an extreme. Our midfield coaches/recruiters and etc have really ****ed over our midfield over the years. We have had plenty of outside type but rarely with elite pace. We have then neglected on getting tough contested players but have many lumpy plodders in there.

The fact they haven't coached players from turning their back on the forwards when they mark in the centre / wing area probably hurts a lot more than foot speed.

To be fair, to an extent talent has been spread thin over the whole league since expansion. It's why we have a bunch of good teams with major flaws, yet no standouts (though with their sheer depth I suspect GWS will keep winning).

We have enough flankers, we've got no problems identifying and developing them. Same for KPFs and especially KPDs.

Its the midfield stupid. FFS

Surely someone with some experience in midfield/stoppage structures could extract more performance from our group though? We hamstring ourselves with lack of backroom expertise.

We definitely need KPD/KPF too with MacKenzie and Schofield likely to go and Kennedy LeCras only a few years left. Gorter/Lamb/Allen/Waterman probably aren't going to be the power players we need to fill the holes that will be left

Perhaps. But we still need to reinvigorate our midfield group.

Absolutely. But our fwd line in 2005/2006 was nowhere near as good as our current one. The difference was a rolls-royce midfield. We need to draft a KPF and a KPD, but top line midfielders can have more influence on the outcome of a game IMHO.

Agree with that. We could afford to have Lamb at FF if we had NicNat palming to the likes of Shuey and Venables streaming out of the centre.

Hey - maybe worth a go. Not the NicNat bit but Lamb given a go in the forward line (Drew at FF and Lamb as 3rd tall)

Another HBF? Never change West Coast.

One with inconsistent kicking if damaging when on song. The problem is that he plays in one of the most offensively minded teams in the competition.

He'd have more to do at Westcoast defensively.
