Can Shuey still be called a future Captain at 28 yrs old I think that boat has sailed

Nonsense. As others have pointed out plenty of players have been appointed the captaincy recently around the same age and older. One of the main things that I really like about Shuey potentially captaining this club is the fact he seems to have great relationships with his team mates no matter their age. Where as Hurn (from the outside looking in) seems like a bit of a recluse and doesn’t seem like he would be relatable to the younger lads, as we’ve heard he prefers sticking to the older lads, mainly Pridda.

I don't think we are in bad position with our younger guys on the list .

People are impatient with draftees not coming on quick enough but the draftees who come in and have great first seasons are usually either

- high end talent
- physically more mature but will have lower ceilings
- or have a specific attribute that allows them to play a role

We haven't had high end picks and we have drafted talent with higher ceilings that needs developing .

Most draftees will take 2-4 seasons to get consistency and won't peak until 24-25 years old .

We had 3 all Australians this year and none were consistent before 22-23 years old .

Guys like sheed Duggan barrass are starting to get that consistency and should hopefully push their games to the next level .

The next tier down Cole , Nelson , partington , karpany , watson, mutimer, venables have talent but need to get there consistency up and close that gap between good and bad games .

Rioli has talent in spades but lacks fitness .

Rotham needs a few preseason but has a lot of desirable afl attributes .

All in all a good spread of younger players that can hopefully become regulars in the coming years .

Despite what others have said, I don't believe that our drafting has been terrible - we have managed to get talent through the draft. I cringe at our development though. Karpany and Lamb I feel have been developed poorly. Can you really count that as a wasted pick? Cole and Nelson are both academy talents with requisite skills to be 10 year players, it's up to our development team to see that come to fruition. If we drafted a Braun or Embley now I don't ave confidence that they would develop to anywhere near the heights they achieved for us a decade ago.

Totally agree

Forget bringing people in, lets just get rid of some spuds.

Big spuds, small spuds, everything must go.

Dont necessarily need "top picks" to rejuvinate a list if you can identify talent and potential properly.

Take Ellis Yolman for example..
You are hilarious. You and your Marsden comments are endlessly amusing to yourself..... And yourself. Honestly, the more you repeat yourself, the funnier you must become.... To yourself. Honestly.

disagree.
1. we'll actually get some team defence from two extra mids this season now we don't have Mitchell and Priddis
2. If we draft ready made mature age players like Tim Kelly that could really add something
3. Stop playing three key position defenders and go small like in 15 (goodbye Mackenzie)
4. have some small forwards that provide goals and pressure (goodbye LeCras)
5. Get back NicNat
6. Profit.
7 Win flag

You are counting on a lot to go right. We scrapped into the 8 and won one game in the finals where we should have been beaten. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

We had no depth in the middle before losing Priddis and Mitchell. Our inside 50 count was ordinary. JJK papered over a lot of the cracks for us.

You are assuming we get what we want in the draft and our injuries are low and Nic returns to form.

Jessica from 8th grade, is that you?

Better off trading pick 13 to GCS, they have 4 picks between 20 and 28 if IIRC and you could get two of the lower ones say pick 21 and pick 24 for just pick 13, then they trade 13 plus whatever for Weller. Win win except for Freo
Suggest you would only get 2 picks (say 24 26) while we may get 3 picks via Ess Dogs. The talent is pretty even from 20 to 35 from how I read it so an extra pick is more desirable.

I've watched all the highlight packages for the top 30 players and I reckon we need to keep pick 13 and hope for a slider like Darcy Fogarty or Balta. If not I'd pick O'brien. Clean left foot, a 400m Vic track champion, top 5 I think in the 2km with the 20m speed to boot. Also from Mildura so probably not going to worry about running home to Melbourne. Hunter Clark and Brayshaw use the ball and move well too but might be off the table by then. Too many of these kids butcher the footy though, and if you can't handle U18's pressure there's not much hope for you in the AFL

Gibbs to Adelaide done.

Trade paperwork Lodged - Adel trade out - r1 (10 ontraded), r1 (16), r4 (73), 2018 Rd2.
Carl trade out - B Gibbs, r5 (77), 2018 Rd2, 2018 Rd3.

What if we trade our future first to Carlin for 10 and 16. Then trade 13 and 50 for 25 28 30

10, 16, 25, 28, 30, 32 to the draft.

Fantasy thinking I know

Depends how carlton rate next years draft. To even be considered you'd have to think next years first + 32 for 10,16. 13 and 50 for 25, 28, 30. Go in with 10,16,25,28,30 and a couple of late draft picks to hopefully pick up a couple more mature agers. Pick 10 in my mind sees us getting one of my top 3 choices relative to position as a guarantee, 16 potentially gets a slider. 25,28 for Worpel & Forgerty. 30 for Kelly or Spargo. (i can see both of these 2 going between 30-50 but it's our last pick in this range)

Other than getting a sweet deal on Lever, I’m thinking Adelaide maybe shit at trading.

Very good at development but remember them stuffing up a few during trade week

They get a decent second round upgrade next year though, which will likely be only a couple of picks later than Adelaide's first.

Reckon it's not too bad a trade by Adelaide. Though I guess Gibbs was guaranteed to go home

which 10 to 12 kids do you think we will be debuting next year? Best case scenario based on the last few years I can see is Venables, Rioli, Watson, Waterman, 2017 1st round pick and potentially someone like Kelly who isn't really a kid. 6 players is probably the ideal number of debutants, with hopefully around 4 cementing a best 22 spot without "going too far the other way."

That's exactly the point I was trying to make. If we cut much deeper, which is what Obeanie wanted, we risk having too many kids on the list to be able to bring them into the seniors.

Over the last 3-4 years a lot of kids have languished at WAFL level because we were pushing for a flag and not developing the youth. If we draft in 7-8 kids to add to the group of untried kids we already have yet to break into the 22, we risk another generation of kids languishing in the WAFL because we can't blood them all.
