Just having a very early, pre-trade week stab at a top ten to get a rough idea of who might be available. More just out of boredom than anything.

#1: Brisbane Lions - Luke Davies-Uniacke
#2: North Melbourne - Cameron Rayner
#3: Carlton - Jarrod Brander
#4: Collingwood - Adam Cerra
#5: Gold Coast - Darcy Fogarty
#6: St Kilda - Jaidyn Stephenson
#7: Fremantle - Sam Hayes
#8: Western Bulldogs - Hunter Clark
#9: Essendon - Jack Higgins
#10: West Coast Eagles - Lochie O'Brien

So, on this basis we could also have available:
  • Nick Coffield
  • Oscar Allen
  • Paddy Dow
  • Joel Garner
  • Aaron Naughton
etc etc
Go check out how your list stacks up against the BF experts in the trial run in the draft thread.
Monocle has us taking O'Brien first
Sam Taylor second( kpd) and banfield third so far

Don't like Banfield with our 3rd Pick , ok as a rookie pick I guess ..

Why don't you like the pick?
If either us or Freo had taken him in last years draft with the numbers he is stacking up in the WAFL this year then the supporters would be screaming for him to debut.
Yes I could have taken a player from this years cohort who would have taken another 2 years to develope ..... How does that improve our midfield next year.
Both Dylan Moore and Charlie Ballard where available midfielders and both look like good prospects going forward but they won't play for a couple of years . Banfield in a plug in ready inside mid that will the hard ball.

I have two friends who are with different recruiting teams at AFL Clubs and one told me that his Club has a third round grade on him and that Banfield would be the first WAFL player to be taken.

Ideally last years rookie draft

And I only wish we had done that.
Because he would have made his AFL debut by now has we taken him.
Unfortunately our recruiters thought we needed another third tall / half back flanker so took Gorter instead.

I would still love to speak to the recruiter who decided Mitch Duncan was a worse option the Garrick Weedon...
I worked at east Perth at the time and Mitch played a season of league footy at a decent level.. now look at him
This really was an inexcusable miss. Hard to find any posters who weren't keen on Duncan at that pick.

Surely Tim Kelly goes ahead of Banfield.

Should take Joel Garner, we're light on quality fast bowlers.

I'm sure I'm the first person in 99 pages of this thread and the hundreds on the draft board to make this joke.

All good :thumbsu: ....... I have posted my edited write up on the Mock Draft board that gives my rationale for picking him and my description on Banfield.
rather than repeat it you might like to read it to see where I am coming from.

Nick Coffield
Paddy Dow
James Worpel

Any of these players would be good picks ..

I like the look of Dow in particular. Looks like he will be a quite a reasonable inside/out mid. Probably doesn't have the skills of an O'Brien for instance so I wonder if we might discriminate against him on this basis (mind you we took Partington in 2015 who merely has 'okay' footskills).

I'm comfortable that if our pick stays roughly where it is (10) we have a good chance of getting a very good player. Part of me wants us to retain that top ten pick just for the pointless perk of seeing the draftee up on the stage in an Eagles jumper, haha.

That Nicholas Coffield kid reminds me a bit of Elliott Yeo. We drafted a Shuey copy last year, maybe we can grab a Yeo this year?

I personally prefer we go for a more 'pure' mid if it's not a KPF. We probably have enough utility types that have potential to play midfield but may not necessarily get there (Duggan, Cole, Nelson, Rotham). That being said just going 'best available' in the first round presents less risk.

I think Worpel is the odd man out there. He's got the whole "get the ball or die trying" thing going for him but his kicking gets criticised, he's not an amazing athlete and while he's a good size at junior level, he's not going to be a Patrick Cripps in the AFL.

The caveat here is that I usually get these things wrong so he could end up with a Brownlow or two.

How do you think the talent 50+ in the draft stacks up? Personally I would prefer Tim Kelly over Banfield, but I think this may be the sort of draft where mature agers might be the way to go in the later rounds. If we took both with our third and fourth picks I'd probably be okay with it provided we pick up a tall somewhere earlier for balance.
