Like I said few pages back, Matera might be a decent get. Has a bit of toe and with a decent forward set up and delivery he could cause a bit of havok in our forwardline. He also could be chucked on a wing or hff and add a bit of pace further down the ground.

I'd love to get McGovern but it sounds like we will need to pay him a truckload (600k+ per year) and would have to pay up in a trade to Adelaide. We generally bring lube to trade week so heaven knows what we'd give up to get him. I'd rather use the cap space go hard at a free agent that we dont have to pay for.

Agreed, although if we cut like we should this offseason we could find the money elsewhere.

There's an article about him maybe coming to us in the west, although it's all just speculation and a diplomatic answer he gave when someone asked him about his future.

Personally I'd rather pass on the friend of Harley Bennell who loved it on the GC and didn't think of coming back until they got sick of his shit.

We have some cap space freeing up at the end of year with eMac but not that much elsewhere. Where I see us freeing up salary cap will be to hold LeCras, Wellers, Priddis and Hill to same money (ie extend and no increase) and use the increase in cap to extend the likes of McGovern, Gaff Shuey and Yeo who all expire at the end of 2018. We should still have a significant portion available to throw at a free agent. We should have another chunk of change coming free at the end of 2018 with Jetta, Giles, Priddis and probably Hurn. The later 2 may go on but will not be commanding much.

Contracted until the end of 2017 (12):
Possibly going or on minor dollars:
Eric Mackenzie - reported to be $600k and likely to be back at Claremont in 2018 so BIG savings
Sam Mitchell - possible for another year but not rock star status given he will have a 5 year coaching deal and I believe Hawks paid part of his salary
Sam Butler - may go on but not big $$ so a cheap veteran

Likely to get the same deal as on now
Mark LeCras - has been good so far this year and more of the same will get him another year at moderate $
Sharrod Wellingham - has been OK and expect he gets another year but again probably the same $$
Matt Priddis – personally I would ask him to drop down in $ to allow a FA, he is going nowhere
Josh Hill - same as for Wellers

Younger ones likely to go up
Dom Sheed - he will be on OK money and expect a salary increase but not major as he has not delivered yet
Jackson Nelson - expect him to come back and continue what we saw earlier this year and will get a decent increase

Younger and at risk of delist or re-rookie
Malcom Karpany

Nice summary, but what we have no way of knowing is what contracts, if any, have been either front or back loaded and to what extent

Are we sure Mackenzie's completely finished? We could keep him on a lower salary as a perfect backup should Gov or Barrass go down.

Good post. I'm half expecting LeCras to go this year though which would help.

$600k for McGovern would be a bit of a rort for a guy who has 35 goals in 26 games so I'd probably advocate offering less or not going after it.

Keeping both he and Schofield (who is in and out of the side to begin with) seems like overkill. There are cheaper, younger backup options out there. Aaron Naughton is a promising KPD from Peel in this year's draft - you'd probably hope we wouldn't use a first rounder on a KPD though.

Better to have the depth unless there's a positive deal in the works, whilst we're up and about... Players get injured (see: 2015)

People get "hung up" on what pick a certain pick a player got drafted at , when assigning value down the track which is a fraught with danger.
A players value ,in the here and now, has no correlation to where he originally was drafted at.

I reckon it's still relevant up until the end of the first contract - not massively, but not insignificantly. A former pick 1 who has struggled slightly in his first two years will probably still fetch a better deal than a rookie draftee who has done moderately well and even cracked a game or two in his first two years. At the end of the day it's still a reflection of their potential. After that first two years has elapsed however it's relevance fades.

That's a fair point, but as Jiggyman said, its better to have proper depth then be screwed like we are currently in the ruck department. Still, I haven't really been paying attention to Mackenzie this year, has the game gone past him or is he just cooked?

I wouldn't pay him 1/4 of what he's on right now. Surely if he tested the free market he could get more money and game time. likely one if not Both Mackenzie and Schofield will be gone for 2018. Thats a bit of cap space. Could pick up a good young backman to develop and a solid back up from one of the state leagues for the time being.

Now is the time to offer slightly less to LeCras and Priddis. Yes they've been loyal servants but their age puts them at risk of higher injury likely production declines. They've made their bank.

rookie draft jonthan marsh as kpd stock. Just pray gorter can improve. We got to move schoey and emac on and free some cap. really need to utalise this draft, unless there's some real god talent coming in.

Unless we move jack darling on, theres no need for mitch gov tbh.

Essendon a chance? Woosha likes him.

I disagree with almost everything in this post

McGovern and Barrass have gone past him and he is less suited to our zone style defence

His recent form at EP has been good and he's still capable of being an AFL player - would be getting regular games as best 22 at many other clubs

I'd be surprised if he doesn't look for other opportunities as a FA at the end of the season

Any interest in Jarrod Garlett if he has a good year in the WAFL?

Have heard we are not interested. Also regarding M McGovern hearing that Adelaide have offered around the 300k mark and Freo are willing to more than double it. Hearing that we are keen but won't go that high. Will come down to playing in WA or playing with his Brother.

Guess they'll have all that money they won't be paying Fyfe.
