Have you seen the movie concussion?

No I haven't... but I would be interested in your thoughts on the movie.

Based on a true story( I think) of a doctor studying the effects of NFL players careers on their mental health ,quite a large amount have committed suicide.
The NFL tried to squash it.
I'm not a will smith fan generally but it was a good flick and thought provoking.
You could see why some players go off the rails post retirement

This might sound really stupid, but I wonder if Patty McCartin is gettable this offseason? Seems to be getting very limited opportunity at StKilda, and would ultimately replace Josh Kennedy in 1-2 years.
There's been a few suggestions in the media that he might be gettable by other Vic clubs

Think we'd be hard pressed to convince him to move considering he's likely to have good offers from Melbourne clubs

Like Brayshaw he also has a concussion history that's troubling

That was my opening point. We had no chance in terms of these two specifically. But, when we don't get these players we try making up for it by signing anyone that nominates us no matter the cost.

Like I said, jetta and redden were average at the time we signed them yet we gave up a first rounder and a backup ruck for two players that aren't exactly young. We didn't HAVE to sign redden, yet brisbane managed to steal a first rounder off us for him
Are you sure it was that way? I heard we were chasing Redden and he was open to the idea of moving to Perth. Yeo is on record saying he did not start the discussion in getting him over.

Was there some history with Brisbane that they were owed a little more for Yeo? Surely pick 28 for Elliott as we sit in 2017 was way unders.

Looking at the draft, our 1st rounder was effectively pick 21. Who would you have taken instead of Redden?

Wouldn't have said no to Ben McKay. Lovell hasnt done much, same same Cunningham. Keays was Academy IIRC - nope. Dunkley was apparently not going to leave Vic. Collins wasnt needed because we were flush with KPDs. Tucker - has done more than Partington but thats arguably because he can break into the team. Morgan - nope. Redman - not needed because we had plenty of flankers/third tall KPF. Clarke - wouldnt have said no. Sier - nope.

I actually think trading out late first, early second round picks for players with a few years experience can be a good strategy.

I think we have probably won all of the Wellingham, Yeo and even Redden trades.

Grundy the only player from the Wellingham draft year worth anything and we wouldn't have drafted him with the ruck stocks we had then.

28 for Yeo was a massive win

Probably still to early to make a call on Redden but expect he will continue to be at least best 22-25, drafting where we did is about a 50/50 bet on getting a good player, plenty of busts that wouldn't even make 50 games.

Broadly agree. I think we tend to really over-rate the potential of draft picks versus the 'hit or miss' reality of them. But trading for established players lacks the Star potetential of a draft pick. A late first can turn into a Luke Shuey or a Gerrick Weedon. So there's a balance there depending on the balance of your existing list. In each of these specific cases though, agree that we appear to be in front on each of the Wellingham, Yeo and Wellingham trades.

McKay, Collins and Tucker would have been far better selections than Partington IMO.

I don't disagree, but I was trying to take into account the club's reasoning for picks. We needed mids that year so realistically we could've picked Clarke, Tucker or Partington. Who knows how Parto would've gone by now if he was at Freo and played 10 games?

McKay may not have been judged highly enough for us to pick him. But considering our lack of a replacement for Kennedy maybe we shouldve picked him.

I like Parto will be a good player when he gets his chance so happy enough with that pick ..

Mckay was only taken due to his twin having talent ,Collins is a slow old fashioned fullback and Tucker may be ok ..

No disrespect intended but that's a bit of a glossing over of the fact that Tucker outstrips Partington by a long way so far. There is a very good chance, considering both his performances to date and the attributes he possesses (exceptional skill and leg speed), he will be a good AFL level player. Partington is a reliable mid who can find the ball very well but has significant question marks over his game. There is also no chance McKay was only taken because his brother was good.

The relevant comparison here is more Redden v Tucker than Tucker v Partington, and personally I think we lost out on that too.

Will Jetta be delisted at the year's end?
Interesting call with Jetta.

I believe Jetta signed on a 3 year contract meaning he is contracted through to end of 2018.
Based on his form over 2016-17 plus hearing that he is suffers from depression a bit, he does not warrant keeping on the list.

Our 2 realistic options that I would go for are
1) Delist with a promise to pick him up as a rookie and honour his payment or if he gets listed to make up any shortfall
2) Straight pay him out

Either way, we could do well in freeing up a main list spot. If he comes good in 2018, then he would warrant an upgrade.

I think Jetta might still get a 1 year deal. The noise from the club has still been positive by and large whenever Jetta has come up.
I think they are talking a good story about Jetta but hearing a couple of points saying he is a worry. It is all about getting his confidence up hence the desire for him to build up a body of work at East Perth.

I'd be very interested to see what they do. They are constantly pumping up his tyres in media releases, but he doesnt seem to be interested in playing to anywhere near his potential. I would like to see option 2, moreso to give guys like Watson and Snadden an opportunity.

Could Francis Watson be upgraded from the rookie list, or have all the senior spots been taken up?
