Just about to head off to the WA V SA Under 18's game at Subiaco.

:rightmagnify: :memo: :telescope: :eyes:

Will give you a bit of a summary of my thoughts on the talent on display latter.

I am not expecting a lot from WA as the talent this year is pretty thin.
There are a couple of guys from SA that I have an interest in.

Anyway more latter.

Anyone else going ?

Was going to ask if you were going

I'm going to go along and watch even though I won't know any of the players from a bar of soap

Acres was terrible last night. 15 touches, only 4 contested as well as 2 clangers.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was dropped. Good, keep it going son, get dropped, then get homesick and request a trade.

Amirite!
I haven't seen any of his better games but I'm not too sure what he would add other than depth? Big bodied mid/hff ,does he have many high posession games?

6 games over 21 touches this year, also booted 7 goals so far from 10 games.

Last night was his worst game of the year, but generally he's got similar stats to Sheed this season.

Went to the U18 WA v SA game and sharing thoughts/views.

My main focus was on the WA boys so never planned to give much on SA other than the top prospects being touted.

My headline comment is that we can look forward to seeing some decent home grown talls in the draft (espcially KPD) but we will need to go east for quality mids this year.

There are a couple of KPD that impressed in Sam Taylor and Aaron Naughton. Preference for Taylor at 196 cm and he reads the play particularly well and generally smart with distribution out of defence as well as having good foot skills. Naughton at 194 cm is also a decent prospect who understands his defensive craft and would be a possible late pick. Both were winners on the day.

Staying with talls, I liked the work of Ben Miller who at 196 cm KPF and he did pretty well in the ruck against the taller SA ruck. He can actually ruck and is a strong mark both in the forward line and down the line. In terms of ruck, Frampton has improved since I last saw him and his ruck work was strong. Being a left handed ruckman makes him an interesting proposition. To put Miller and Frampton rucking into perspective, they were up against well regarded opponents in Coleman-Jones at 201 cm and bottom ager Flinn at 200 cm and probably still growing.

Up front, Oscar Allen is a 3rd tall at 191 cm and did well (especially liked his kicking) and when Miller went to the ruck, Allen was the sole tall forward option which he did well.

As a collective, our midfield offered few prospects. The pick of the inside mids was Ameduri and at 187 could be a strong inside mid we need. I do not need to through the poor form players but there were some really dumb decision makers and a few classic butchers of the ball. No way near the strength of midfield that WA had last year. Miller is a prospect for 2018 but he showed enough for me to think he may be a tough big bodied mid with another year of growing and filling out. I like the way he presents in teh contest.

The bright light for me was Ian Hill. A bottom age Perth prospect and he is fast, clean and could well make a great small forward. He makes good decisions and attacks the ball. I was happy to see him also been given some time in the midfield and played on through what looked like a pretty tough should hit.

For SA, top prospect Foggarty was good in what he did but not as dominant as I would have thought. Coleman-Jones in the ruck was really strong in the last quarter and he was really well coached late in the game locking the ball in. Martini showed potential as an extractor. That said, the SA team looked as bad as I have seen for some time.

WA won by a golden point. They were clearly the better team for 3 quarters but stopped running the ball out of defence and blazed away to a disciplined last quarter SA who just locked the ball in their forward 50. Some dumb decision making and poor execution from WA from payers who I expected to be better.

Hurry up and give me your thoughts.

The talent that was on display was not that flash , but to be fair it was as advertised as it has been frequently mentioned that the SA & WA teams were not as strong as previous years.

I could not help but feel that there were players on both teams who would not have made their respective State squads in other years.

Eagles bias stated up front and so acknowledged ;) I was looking for what I see as our team needs come draft time.

Quality Midfielders. :heavymultiply::heavymultiply::heavymultiply::heavymultiply: :(
KPP :heavycheck::heavycheck:
Developing Ruck Stocks. :heavycheck:
Crumbing Forwards. :heavycheck: but not for this year. :(

And general talent regardless of where they played. :heavycheck:

Darcy Fogerty is a class act and will be taken early in the first round , no doubt about that.
That said he didn't WOW me as much as I was hoping he would . Early first sure ...... but number #1 ???. I will reserve my judgement on that one.

The player who impressed me as being the best player on display today ( not however necessarily the BOG ) was WA's Ian Hill who is unfortunately underage and he will be a real special player next year. This kid just "ozzes" class, poise, smarts and tricks ( God can he sell candy :lollipop::lollipop: ) if you were looking for a nippy clever highly skilled small crumbing forward then this kid ticks every box and then some.

OK I thought WA's best player by some margin was Sam Taylor who played FB he is a very good prospect who I (at this stage and rising ) have a mid to late second round grade on.

Other good performers were Aaron Naughton who reads the ball so well in flight and knows when to mark and when to punch, footy smarts and competes well, now it may have been a bad day but I thought his disposal was a little ragged.

Oscar Allen is a good prospect as a third tall at 191 he is at that tweener height, great set of sticky hands.

SA's Callum Coleman-Jones had a quiet first half but he really announced himself in the second half , particularly in the last quarter, good mark and at 201 cm his foot skills are also impressive.

Adelaide F/S prospect Jackson Edwards looks like a beauty.

Ballard looked good has something about the way he reads the play and at 195 he has raw potential.

Other than the above mentioned names none stood out as high probability draft picks.

However.

Theses are the names I will be following more closely at The Champs and latter on in the year as possibles :

SA: Martini, Coles, Under ager Flinn.

WA : Ainsworth, Ameduri, Young, Miller.

Honourable mention to Frampton he rucked well today , but I just don't see him projecting as a AFL ruck man but his involvement and work around the ground was impressive and note worthy , just where he would play at AFL is the puzzle..... but one to keep tabs on for a rookie spot.

Left the game slightly underwhelmed but not disappointed as the talent on show was never advertised as being top shelf, by compairson to previous years.

As for seeing any classy midfielder I came up donuts today.

It was a hard fought game, that was entertaining, but it never reached any great heights skill wise, but the close finish made for exciting watching.

Assuming Ian Hill is the younger brother of Stephen and Brad Hill !?

Wouldnt mind the Eagles taking Sam Taylor sounds like a top 20 pick maybe and although we need best midfielders taking Taylor would be great for further consolidating the KPP stocks .

At least with Taylor we know we have most likely a future AFL player .

Cousin according to this:

Western Australia was led to a 42-point victory over Vic Country by Ian Hill, who is the cousin of Fremantle's Stephen and Hawthorn's Brad.

This - Ian Hill. Spot on with seeing him as a real differentiator. He has great speed and for a lad so young he was prepared to back in some silky skills and weaving through traffic. Just in front of where I was sitting he tried to keep the ball in play and he has a touch of wizardry about him.

BOND 007 - can you please assure me that O'Brien and the team will keep a close eye on him and not let him slip to Port while we take another solid Melbourne citizen?

He's one for the 2018 draft.

Does anyone know if he was part of our 2016 Academy intake? He was eligible.
