Lamb is worth keeping on simply based on what we paid for him. It was a strong draft and we took a risk - might as well try to make it work.
Agree and I would be happy to rookie Lamb BUT only if we are prepared to try him say as a winger and let him perfect this in the next 12 months

2/3 Darling's last games have been very positive. If we get the balance right in our forward half he shouldn't be going anywhere... Must've been a stressful time these last few months. Bloke is younger than me and I can't even imagine having a family :D

Darling is contracted until the end of 2020. The only other player contracted for longer is Shuey after the extension to 2022 he recently signed

Obviously the club is happy with him and he isn't going anywhere anytime soon

Been discussing with some other posters as to what we want. General feeling is:

1st Round - a really good mid (preferably inside) and there will be really good options at 10 to 15 picks and they offer differences (more and more coming from Melbourne that the draft is not as shallow as stated 2 months ago but that the top 6 is really open). Examples: Worpel, Higgins, Clarke, Constable, L Fogarty, etc
2nd Round - a tall and there are some good talls that will be ideal for us at the 25 to 35 range - (WA and Vic). Examples: Naughton, Taylor, Allen, etc
3rd Round - another mid who can actually also play smaller forward. Examples: D Moore, Spargo (sliding and injured so may last)
4th Round - perhaps a local WAFL lad that has shown something like Banfield, Tim Kelly

Note my examples are not hard must gets but indicative. There will be a lot of movement in this over the next 4 months with PSA allowing players to spend more time at Colts/TAC, players growing and maturing, players given a chance at SANFL and WAFL seniors.

Some hard decisions coming on the list if we want to make much more than the minimum three list changes

Butler and Lecras retired?

Lamb traded maybe

Mackenzie leaves as a FA?

Hill not given a new contract?

Mitchell retires which I'd rather he play on

Maybe Priddis reads to tea leaves and pulls the pin

McInnes, Snadden, Gorter and Tunbridge all fighting to keep a spot on the rookie list and Petrie most likely retires
giles should go to rookie list imo.
only reason he plays is under an injury crisis, in which case we can promote him.

We gotta do what we gotta do to make the cap work but we had/have an injury crisis at his position and he isn't playing, which is all anyone needs to know.

His 3 year contract is right up there with Hansen's 3 year deal whilst Kennedy was looking a huge talent.

Either way - I want Giles off the main list come year end. Hopefully with the salary cap space we supposedly have, we could just pay him out come year end.

Reality:
1st Round - Jason Johanissen
2nd Round - another mid who can't actually play smaller forward.
3rd Round - perhaps a local WAFL lad who has shown something nothing
4th Round - a tall and (knowing our draft history) there will be some good talls for us at the 55 to 70 range

What an investment with JJ for our 1st Round Pick. It would go to making a trifecta of disastrous trades with our first round. Wellers, Redden and JJ!!!!! They are all decent footballers but none of them close to 1st round quality.

Probably a good thing that Hutch did such a good job on JJ showing that we would be foolish to offer even a second round for him given that form. Looks like the formulae for stopping JJ is out and his Norm Smith Medal performance will be the exception not the norm!

10 Likes thanks - first round for a guy that can not compete? Surely masten has a twin

People really over rate draft picks in my mind.

Disagree on the Wellingham trade, don't see any players drafted around our selection that I think we missed on.

Jury still out a little on Redden, has looked more of a bust, but showed positives without Priddis in the side.

Agreed on JJ. I really don't want, but I reckon it's 50/50 we (or any team) would draft a decent player at our first pick

If lecras retires I'd keep hill.rioli is unproven and injury prone, but if we get Matera hill may be shown the door

No way Jose. Don't offer either a contract and pick up two speedy crumbers in the draft/rookie draft. Not small forwards that are best on the lead. Speedy, agile, tackling crumbing forwards.

Contracted until the end of 2017 (9):
Eric Mackenzie - Signed 4-year contract (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) in June 2013. Leave as FA. Will just be an elephant in the room when Barrass should be playing. We also have Schoey.
Mark LeCras - Signed a 4-year contract (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) in June 2013. Retire/ Leave as a FA ala Lynch. Draft a crumbing forward. Young first year crumbers can come into the league and have an impact.
Sharrod Wellingham - Signed a 2-year contract (2016, 2017) in August 2015. Offer him one year.
Malcom Karpany - Signed a 2-year contract (2016, 2017) in October 2015 Sign on. Have bee impressed.
Josh Hill - Signed a 1-year contract (2017) in September 2016. Like the guy but I wouldn't offer him a new contract. See LeCras
Sam Mitchell - Signed a 1-year deal (2017) when traded in October 2016 Keep and force Priddis into retirement
Sam Butler – Signed a 1-year contract (2017) in October 2016. Retire.
Tom Lamb - Signed a 1-year contract (2017) in October 2016 Sign him for 2 years.

Thats only 4 main list changes not including forcing Priddis to retire.

Masten - trade for a 3rd or 4th round pick upgrade.

We've only got 39 senior listed players so there's a vacant spot on the list that could be used next year.

Someone like Giles could be dropped down to the rookie list.

Lamb's probably unlikely to be retained unless he forces his way into the side in the next eight weeks.

Not sure why ppl are suggesting forcing priddis to retire? He just signed on for another year
I'm all for getting him on the rookie list tho along with giles

Yes but there's no chance if they just signed him.
I realize this is all pie in the sky stuff but...

Just pay him out. Who cares. He's garbage and costs the team. I cant believe Geelong got rid of Bartel and Enright when they were playing significantly better than this spud.

Our best chance is to convince him to retire and take on a highly paid coaching job, but what will probably happen is we trot him out in the middle week-in week-out for the next season and a half.

I can see him being good depth next year, probably Mitchell has hinted he will retire and they want to keep some experience

I think they will keep one of Lecras and Hill. I'd prefer they keep Hill but if Lecras gets another year I think that will mean Hill gets the chop.

Karpany needs to re-sign

Butler is no chance of being on the list next year.
