I think that will put off a lot of east coast and even interstate clubs. However, see a club like Adelaide or Sydney could take a punt on him. Adelaide seems to have a tight knit group of indigenous lads and with Eddie Betts as a positive mentor, its probably what he needs. Betts is also turning 31 and getting his successor isn't a bad idea.
Betts pressures pressures pressures. Can't see Ryan ever really developing that game. Not sure he'll get an AFL chance with those limitations. If he does, good luck to him. Certainly has the talent.

Liam Ryan has 50 goals from 16 games already. Amazing numbers for a small forward. He isn't even 21 yet and we seriously need to look at him now that both Lecca and hill are close to being done and cripps not providing much. I really wouldn't mind us spending our 3rd or 4th pick on someone like him. Its a massive risk but if it pays off, it could pay off huge for us.

Imagine a forward line of Rioli and ryan roving to JK and JD.
Or we could have picked him up for free in the rookie draft last year. Just like we could have picked up Darcy Cameron in the rookie draft the year before. In recent years we've completely wasted the rookie list.

I agree that we haven't had much success with our rookie list lately but TBH can't really think of anyone we really missed on big time (happy to stand corrected)

Yes I would have added Cameron last year, but he is still yet to play a game for the swans.

I think we need to find a balance between high risk/reward type players (Ryan) and guys that look good but just need some time and development (Cameron). Unfortunately we took Gorter and really not sure where he fits

Couple of things I heard Hagdorn say this morning . Eagles heavily into Mitch McGovern in Adelaide fri night .

I know it's Hagdorn but in this case he's just repeating what a lot of other people have suggested so I'm going to use this as an excuse to rant.

If we pay a premium to get Mitch McG from Adelaide while not even offering the guy we drafted (and rated) ahead of him a new contract, someone needs to get the sack.

This is something that's really giving me the shits. We're continually picking the Tom Gorter/Brant Colledge types. Vanilla as.
The RD is all about developing that diamond in the rough, time to take that risk. Players like Cameron and Ryan are the perfect candidate types.

I dunno, I just think we use the rookie list wrong. Instead of taking risks on young players we just seem to populate it with recycled crap (our teams and other teams).
I just don't think it's a coincidence that from players drafted 2011 onward we've debuted the least amount of players off the rookie list.

Does it make it worse that Colledge was originally drafted in the main draft. Pick 45, next pick was Tim Membrey. Can tell you who I would rather

I think I'm agreeing with you, just maybe adding it is bloody hard getting success with the rookie list

It is, but lately we haven't given ourselves much chance. Instead of taking risks on younger players we've just tended to move guys who aren't good enough down to the rookie list, or brought in guys who couldn't make it at another team.
Our rookie picks back to 2011 are:
  • Gorter
  • Petrie (Another team)
  • McInnes (Redraft)
  • Snadden
  • Colledge (Redraft)
  • Waterman (Redraft)
  • Tunbridge (Redraft)
  • Lucas (Another team)
  • Maginnes
  • Powell
  • Newman (Redraft)
  • Sinclair
  • Bennell (Another team)
  • Mascoulis
  • Papertalk
  • Dick (Another team)
  • Tunbridge
It's pretty damning imo, especially the more recent drafts.

Exactly and chances are Ryan will go in the main draft (like Cameron did) when we could have taken a flyer on them and virtually had a free hit at them in the rookie draft.

This list is depressing.

I would prefer Priddis delisted and Mitchell one more year myself .
delisting mitchell but keeping priddis?

club should be burnt down.

I think its better if Mitchell doesn't play after this year. He turns 36 next year. As good as he is he's not helping us reach a flag and just taking up space for a younger player to develop. I think he would be a handy coach.

*I'm not saying I want Priddis either before anyone says that

And most of those recycled players and redrafts were never going to make it. Should be a moratorium on drafting delisted players until we have won another flag

He has been good for a while, why didn't we take a risk on him in last years rookie draft? Would of cost us nothing! Now we will prob miss out.

3 of the redrafts were due to contracts. Giles maybe is a candidate this year if they dont pay him out.
Yep, and I can understand Waterman as well. Doesn't change the fact that we're using the rookie list poorly, whether it's due to giving out stupid contracts or whatever else the reason is it's not being used on players with the potential to become the next McGovern or Cox.

Looks pretty bad but perhaps not the worst.

Some of the redrafts are ok Waterman, Tunbridge maybe Newman all long shots but had potential decent upside.

Bennell and Petrie both played games. Petrie has proven valuable insurance.

Sinclair for me is the most successful use of the rookie list, especially after his best game this week (for the swans) and what we got for him in Jetta.

Still generally agree with what others have said.

It is literally the worst in the AFL though, Sinclair and Tunbridge are the only previously undrafted players we've drafted to the rookie list since 2011 to get games.
