Interesting input on the main boards that if North finish bottom, they just walk Kelly through the pre-season draft.
I still don't see why Kelly or any big free agent wants to go to North. North are small club with shit facilities and an ordinary list. As said other Melbourne clubs that are much bigger and much more prestigious have coin to spend as well. Have to laugh at idea that Kelly and Martin are considering them. They don't want to play in front of 15,000 people in Tasmania, and a half empty eithhad

Money could be matched by pies, tigers, blues, hawks, Melbourne etc if they indicated he wanted to go there.

So 4 is really the only valid one. North are bad though. Don't have many a graders.
Will do if they get Kelly ...... he is a jet who, along with Venables if he comes along like he should, would make our midfield elite when we get some rucks back.

Funny how North are seen to be vocal on making moves. Nobody has said that either Kelly or Martin are even considering North. Mind you, the size deal that is supposedly on the table is pretty tempting.

That's a more generous write-up than I had previously heard although I can't say I have seen enough to form my own opinion. At this very early stage he should be available at our third or fourth pick.
Starcevich in the fourth would be a bargain. Carried a workload injury all year that has been mismanaged by Trinity and East Perth and misused by WA for the first three games of the championships. Micale only changed the way he was used in the final game after a bit of campaigning to get him more midfield minutes.

Wot?

Kelly is obviously an A grader, who at North is though that makes him think they'll be competing for premierships anytime soon? They are behind a lot of teams talent wise.

I was intimating that if they were to get Kelly they would have (at least) one A Grader. Nowhere did I mention that he would make Norf a premiership contender.....
I would love him at WCE ....he, along with returning rucks and a fit and firing Venables, would make our midfield elite.

S******...

There has been much discussion as Venables being our great white hope in the midfield. Did he play a lot of midfield minutes in the juniors? I thought he was a HFF.

Purely wondering if he will be another one of our flankers we try to turn into a midfielder? For what its worth, Id be happy to see him succeed in the HFF role. We haven't had anyone dominate that position in a while.

A toby greene type HFF would be a massive improvement over the Cripps/LeCras/Hills of the world we've been trotting out...

In U18 (both at carnival and TAC) he played HFF with limited midfield minutes.

So is it fair to assume those factoring him into midfield rotations as a known quantity have maybe got ahead of themselves a little or could just be desperate for something to look forward to and hope for?

As I understand it he is not really rotating heavily through the midfield at WAFL level.

Games I saw he was HFF and at some stoppages but rarely at starting centre bounces. Other may have seen differently as I have only seen a half dozen EP games.

Given he hasn't actually had an injury free run to build his fitness properly this year, it's not overly surprising.

In some of his East Perth "highlights" he appears to be running through the middle. A couple of goals on the run starting from just forward of centre. Has not been used heavily as a mid due to his lack of preparation and injury concerns.

Not at all. But if he has not been trialled in the midfield, nor played much juniors there, I don't think he should be factored into future midfield rotations as a known quantity who will save us all.

Wait and see is what I'd say. My comments relate to things Ive read throughout this board, not specifically in this thread., btw.

Is the loss of Alec Waterman bigger than first thought? Those whole followed his junior career and watched him at EP, would a fully fit Waterman be in our best 22 atm with say 20-30 games of experience in his belt? Would have somewhat helped our contested ball issues?

Great read all, many thanks as I have no idea about the draft candidates this year, good to know who we may be looking at.

He played less than 10 games for East Perth and was racking up decent possessions but I did not see many of these games. I can only speak about his Claremont games and his U18.

My view was that he was lining up to be our inside extractor. He was a blue collar inside mid that had reasonable pace, good decision making, good kicking and good handball skills. He occasionally hit the scoreboard but the best for me was that he was a pretty clean extractor. He roved to Darcy Cameron and was really good in that role.

Now whether you can extrapolate to say he would be best 22 is a moot point. We had a player that would have been valuable and whoosh - he's gone. Glandular Fever was cruel to him and I believe we were keen for him on the inside.
