It's pretty apparent we have cash to burn in the salary cap and not enough picks to go around to rebuild our list. I really hope we try and trade on masten/Mackenzie/schofield for late picks this year and try top up our list with a free agent.

I'd be keeping McKenzie

Not sure why "it has to be Coffield" He needs to be playing consistently well as a midfielder to convince me that he is our man.
We have a long list of HBF and before we spend a first rounder on another one I need to be convinced that he is up to the standard as a mid. He does however have time on his side , for the rest of the TAC Cup season to show his midfield adaptability but as of now it still a ? for me.
We took a HFF / MID last year and we desperately need a genuine inside mid. At this juncture I would be leaning towards Higgins with our first.

I didn't mean our first pick 'has to be Coffield', I meant that my favourite has to be Coffield.

I understand the argument against him I just find his high ceiling particularly alluring. The kid has serious talent and if he fulfilled his potential he could be a star.

Higgins I like but fear he may be a forward at the next level am I'm not so sure I want to spend pick 8/9 on him just yet.

I know that this opinion isn't the mainstream opinion on here at the moment but I really don't think our list is as terrible as people think and that with some good list management and development in 2 to 3 years we could challenge before Kennedy retires.

We have very capable KP players but our ruck division was decimated this year and our midfield suffered from that and also carrying older / slower players. How many ruck frees did we give away yesterday? Too many. We need to address the ruck and midfield both for the short and longer term.

Rucks

I'm sure a lot of people on here will think we don't need to do anything here as Naitanui and Lycett will come back next year and our problems are solved. That is a high risk assumption and one I would not make. Players coming back from knee recos take time, Lycett seems to be made of twigs, Vardy is a forward / ruck and that's it. We cannot however use our first rounders this year or next on rucks. So what are the other options?

  1. We trade a quality player for a ruck - possible but we need to pick mids.
  2. We buy a quality ruck as a FA - not possible as there are none
  3. We buy another ruck who is under contract but out of favour / overpaid ATM - possible.
  4. We take a punt on a semi mature ruck who isn't getting a game (like a Stefan Martin deal) - bit of a raffle really. Cox at Pies, Lobbe at Port?
Thoughts?
Agree that our list isn't terrible, but the coaches and players need to get more out of themselves.

It is a very even competition with top talent spread thinly between a lot of clubs, which means that strategy and mentality are of greater importance than before.

As for the ruck issue, how about replace Giles/Mcinnes with a later draft pick? God knows we develop talls well.

Anyone know why we're not in the conversation regarding Hopper from GWS?
If Adelaide is interested, why aren't we?
Who says we aren't? I'm not saying that we are, I'm just saying that the club might be in discussions and that info hasn't leaked yet.

Hopefully we're into him. Apparently the Cats are one of the frontrunners because he's a keen surfer and there's good surfing spots around Geelong.

There's some pretty good surfing spots on the West Coast too, I've heard.

Just ask Connor Blakely

The perfect outcome would be getting the Kelly "brothers", Josh and Tim. Might even be an instant midfield fix.

I hear from a source close to the Gaffs that it's very unlikely Andrew will extend his contract. If that's the case,we should trade him this year. It gives some currency (coupled with out first draft pick) to at least enter the Josh Kelly conversation, as unlikely as it may seem he'd come here.

Think Josh is a pipedream tbh, I'm still keen on Gaff +? for Acres and the Saints first, even more so after seeing Acres game yesterday.

Someone posted on FB that hill has signed with Subi for next season. Looks like the rumour might be true.

This could be turning into a full blown rebuild which I'm not opposed too. Just makes it harder to lure established talent when we could potentially bottom out a bit. In any case I prefer not to spend too much of the cap on individuals (like what Sydney and geelong have done) as I think it doesn't necessarily increase success rates

If not rebuilding, then what? We're not in a window that's for sure.

Any established talent would rather go to Freo than WCE. We're a rabble.

We need as many draft pics as possible this year.

Well everyone was talking mini list clean out a few months ago

Going to be tough to lure players to Perth, players have woken up to the travel factor and the toll it takes on your body and shortens your career. I only see us being able to get West Aussies back on the go home factor, even that does not seem to work now.

My Thoughts

Trade

Gaff- the worry for me is the go home factor, and we end up with nothing for him. We may get something decent for him right now before it's too late.

Lycett- Injury prone, has played 50 games in 7 years, once again has some value, and if Mitch wants to come to us could be part of a trade deal for him with Adelaide.

Delist\Trade

Masten - if you could get something for him, well and good i highly doubt anyone would be interested.

Retire

Priddis
Mitchell
Butler
Giles
LeCras ?

This is why we need to go for someone like Hopper who'll fit the right age profile.
Is he a star now...No but it's a decent chance he will at bare minimum be a bloody good player.
Also seem the type to be strong of character and a move west may not phase him that much.

Might help get Kelly over here too. (who also fit the age profile and would be worth spending pretty big coin on for mine)

Pretty sure gaff will be restricted free agent when he is next out of contract (end if 2018 is 8 years so restricted) like so the idea that we wont get anything isn't true.

Would rather get something now for him, kickstart the rebuild
I get that, but West coast won't offer him up as trade bait, that's not what the club does. It would have to come from gaff himself and if that's his intentions then yeah we might as well face the inevitable now.

Not really, could be mutual. Another team could approach us and Gaff for example, offer him a big contract extension and the chance to go home and us a decent trade.

your assuming the club's intentions isn't to retain gaff, imo gaff is rated very highly internally.
i cant imagine the club giving up gaff for anything less then an a-grader (for example i dont see them entertaining acres).
