Based on the way the game is going (he's not fast or contested enough imo). Also if we rebuild and bottom out he might not look as good (I doubt he will have as many disposals). He will also simply be a year older. We also have better bargaining power if he's contracted

your assuming the club's intentions isn't to retain gaff, imo gaff is rated very highly internally.
i cant imagine the club giving up gaff for anything less then an a-grader (for example i dont see them entertaining acres).

But it wouldn't be just Acres in the proposed scenarios it's also a likely top 10 pick, I actually think St Kilda would knock that trade back

I don't see anyone else on our list who we'd want to trade for him. They'd probably take Duggan for Acres and their second but I'd be very reluctant to do that considering how Duggan has come along.

No way we trade Duggan. He improved so much over the last 6 weeks.

I think with Mitchell as mid coach next year we might see that happen sooner than later!

We can hope, need to get some midfielders from somewhere. Then again the way we've gone this year most of the games have been played on the half back flank so it makes sense we'd just keep playing our draftees there if we want them to get the ball.

I agree Gaff is rated very highly internally, but i would be talking to him now and ask for a decision by the end of this season if we are serious about a rebuild.
My thoughts below if he decides to leave + other trades, interested to know what people think?

We can hope, need to get some midfielders from somewhere. Then again the way we've gone this year most of the games have been played on the half back flank so it makes sense we'd just keep playing our draftees there if we want them to get the ball.

I think with the way he has been playing down there his defensive work has been very good and is racking up the ball well and is giving us some run. He is a ball winner and this will transition well when he gets into the midfield for next year.

I know that this opinion isn't the mainstream opinion on here at the moment but I really don't think our list is as terrible as people think and that with some good list management and development in 2 to 3 years we could challenge before Kennedy retires.

We have very capable KP players but our ruck division was decimated this year and our midfield suffered from that and also carrying older / slower players. How many ruck frees did we give away yesterday? Too many. We need to address the ruck and midfield both for the short and longer term.

I'm sure a lot of people on here will think we don't need to do anything here as Naitanui and Lycett will come back next year and our problems are solved. That is a high risk assumption and one I would not make. Players coming back from knee recos take time, Lycett seems to be made of twigs, Vardy is a forward / ruck and that's it. We cannot however use our first rounders this year or next on rucks. So what are the other options?

1. We trade a quality player for a ruck - possible but we need to pick mids.
2. We buy a quality ruck as a FA - not possible as there are none
3. We buy another ruck who is under contract but out of favour / overpaid ATM - possible.
4. We take a punt on a semi mature ruck who isn't getting a game (like a Stefan Martin deal) - bit of a raffle really. Cox at Pies, Lobbe at Port?

Thoughts?

Between NN, Lycett and Vardy we should be OK. I'm all for drafting or rookie listing a young prospect, but I think paying a ready made player is overkill when we have other deficiencies that the salary cap / trade bait could be used on.

Agree that our rebuild won't be as long as some think. We have a good spine and good flankers, just need to bring along a couple quality kids through the middle to help out Shuey and Gaff.

Yeah Sheed's got a wider range of skills than Priddis. The question is whether or not he will be able to become the absolute extractor and tackling machine Pridda has been for us.

I really don't think (or want) Shred to become Priddis - I think he's primed to be very similar to Simon Black, a bloke who does a lot of things very well with minimal fuss.

Cant see why he'd want to leave. Just starting to get rolling consistency in his game.
He'd have more currency than Gaff I think (on current form & future output, not past)
St Kilda could do with a defender better than Brown.

The saints have theirs + Hawthorns first rounder this year, they should be big players in Martin/Kelly talks.

I'd love for us to somehow lure Kelly.

True but IMO he has the potential to be a top 2 player in this draft. This draft seems to lack players that genuinely project to be 'elite' and I think Coffield is one of them - although he of course may be discounted because he hasn't proven himself as a mid. My liking for him is based on a glass-half-full approach and I feel as though if he transitions into an outside midfielder effectively we will have a serious gun on our hands. I get the argument for an established midfielder but I don't know if there will be one within our range with the upside of someone like Coffield.

On the other hand it's August and my preferences will change no doubt, haha.

I reckon we'll rookie Scott Jones. Especially if Giles and Petrie retire. He's someone who could quite comfortably be the fourth ruckman on a list but still come in and compete in a "break glass in case of emergency" situation.

We are excellent at player retention, and I believe a big reason is because players feel safe that they aren't going to have the rug pulled from under them.

Unless Gaff says he is open to the idea for family reasons it won't be happening (whether that's the right or wrong play, I don't know).

I do understand your view on why we wouldn't trade him as a club. What I don't understand is why he's so highly rated by many of our fans, he's a solid player but at the end of the he's basically a limited outside player who's unlikely to improve much more than he already has.

He's been a very solid performer for years now,he may not be the guy thats going to drag us to victory but he's a very important component.
Losing him would make our midfield worse

That's all we can do because it's looking unlikely we're going to be getting any A-grade midfielders to put around him. My reasoning for trading him is that if it's some sort of package involving Acres and the saints first we may potentially be able to pick up a future A-grade mid in the draft and we'd get back a player in Acres who might end up as damaging as Gaff is now, albeit in a different way.

Yeah i agree completely with this. When our midfield was going well in 2015 he looked like a gun becasue he was playing his role on the wing to perfection. Now that our midfield is rubbish he is getting bashed from pillar to post and in turn his disposal has been terrible.

That's the hope predraft Cole was expected to make the midfield transition I don't mind the guys finding the tempo at hff or hbf and then moving once they get used too the game style and faster pace ..
