Can't use our 2nd, saving it for Birchell
Did you spit your beer out as you heard that, like I did Godfather32?
If those rumours about Birchall and Thomas are correct then someone needs to be sacked!

I can't tell if it's someone taking the piss or if we're genuinely considering these guys. If we are really thinking about them then I think we're in for a rough few years and I'll be needing all the beer I can get my hands on, so no spitting it out.

Whats the chance he is a half back flanker.

Well, get your beer and resume ready, because I'll be going for that football manager's job if this turns out to be accurate. ;):drunk:

I know that this opinion isn't the mainstream opinion on here at the moment but I really don't think our list is as terrible as people think and that with some good list management and development in 2 to 3 years we could challenge before Kennedy retires.

We have very capable KP players but our ruck division was decimated this year and our midfield suffered from that and also carrying older / slower players. How many ruck frees did we give away yesterday? Too many. We need to address the ruck and midfield both for the short and longer term.

Rucks

I'm sure a lot of people on here will think we don't need to do anything here as Naitanui and Lycett will come back next year and our problems are solved. That is a high risk assumption and one I would not make. Players coming back from knee recos take time, Lycett seems to be made of twigs, Vardy is a forward / ruck and that's it. We cannot however use our first rounders this year or next on rucks. So what are the other options?

  1. We trade a quality player for a ruck - possible but we need to pick mids.
  2. We buy a quality ruck as a FA - not possible as there are none
  3. We buy another ruck who is under contract but out of favour / overpaid ATM - possible.
  4. We take a punt on a semi mature ruck who isn't getting a game (like a Stefan Martin deal) - bit of a raffle really. Cox at Pies, Lobbe at Port?
Thoughts?

Delist Giles and rookie list Aaron Redhead or if we need someone more ready Scott Jones.

I think the trades for Wellers and Redden have a big impact on that period. Throw in the GC and GWS factors and theres 3-4 drafts that are compromised by things outside his control.

2011 (GWS affected)
Newman - wasted talent, could have made it, went to jail.
McInness - a not quite talent. Not quite tall enough to be a ruck, not quite agile enough to be a KPF. I think there's some failure in development here too. He's being kept purely for depth, club needs to be more decisive on talent.

2012 (GWS affected, Wellers trade)
Colledge - pick in 40's tried and missed for a big bodies mid. WAFL quality.
Carter - late pick, WAFL quality
Hutchy - great pick, best 22.

2013
Sheed - ACES!
Karpany - talent there, typically would have expected at least 10 more senior games than he's received.
Barrass - ACES!
Main - was always a project that was cut a year early. Seems to have put it together and is killing it at WAFL.

I think the 2011 and 2012 drafts, where we kept picks to a minimum are biting us now.

2011 was very bad that had a snowball effect in 2013.

Image if at either pick 23 or 28 we pick Yeo in the first place, instead of Newman or McInnes, means we could of still had pick 28 in 2013, Rory Lobb was pick 29.

Very easy to look back on with 20/20 hindsight, but I'm pretty sure people around here where keen on both those players before the draft.

Interesting article on afl.com.au saying we are quietly confident in picking up Mitch McGovern. Maybe we are a chance after all.

I don't understand, considering we have his bloody brother on our list, how we aren't the ONLY alternative option for the guy?

'Quietly Confident' - for this club that probably means commence courting 1 hour after he declares Freo as his 'preferred destination'.

a list spot for MArsden would be an ideal situation. Doubt it eventuates unless he actually wants to play AFL.

Really think keeping MAckenzie is silly. Will be putrid if sign him to one of those lengthy overpaid veteran retirement contracts we give out to players that have contributed to the club.

West Coast would need two ruckmen if they lose Giles and/or Petrie, one for now and one for the future.

Redhead is very very raw. He is learning fast but he is at least 2 full seasons away. Very good prospect though and possibly gone beofre the rookie draft.

This has to be some sick joke?. If club is even interested in these 2 then we are well and truly a certified cot case of an organisation.

Surely our recruiting department would be on crack to even entertain the idea.

As said earlier, the account was found to be run by Mike Sheahan's son and he posts an enormous amount of crazy rumours that have almost never come to fruition. He is 99.99% making up the Birchall rumour.
