Interesting thought:

The Rover:
There’s going to be a big clean out at West Coast come season’s end with veterans like Sam Butler, Mark LeCras, Matt Priddis, Sam Mitchell and Drew Petrie either already announcing their retirements or soon to do so.

Which is why I find it hard to believe a rumour I’ve heard over the past couple of weeks from three different sources.

Word is there’s a super-trade under consideration of Andrew Gaff going to Carlton, Bryce Gibbs to Adelaide and Mitch McGovern to the Eagles, with a couple of draft picks moving around too.

Gaff’s been a gun for the Eagles the past three years and it’s hard to see the logic in moving him on, other than that he’s a free agent at the end of 2018 and West Coast may want to trade him while they can get a fair price.

The other two components – Gibbs and McGovern moving home – are both likely to happen, so maybe Gaff could be worked in to the package, but personally I’d rate him the best player in this deal so any ‘steak knives’ thrown in would have to be pretty fancy ones.

We need to make our midfield stronger.
It'd be nuts to weaken it further to get Gov Jr.

I'm not opposed to trading Gaff, but trading him for Mitch McGovern would be beyond stupid.

By getting gov junior we basically keep gov senior which is an added bonus. I like the trade if we get an extra pick. Duggan is primed to move into the middle and covers plenty of territory already he can do Gaffs job. My dream trade would be keeping our first pick and using it on best available genuine midfielder, getting MMcGovern if he wants to come home and grabbing Liam Ryan and Tim Kelly from the WAFL

But we can do all that without trading Gaff, or using Gaff to get something better

What happens if McGovern re-signs which is the most likely ...do we get Carlton's first round pick for Gaff somehow , just throwing a spanner in the works .

Gaffy seems really settled in Perth don't think he is going , hope he stays .

We're gonna need an extra second round pick if we want Kelly and Ryan I doubt they last to our third round pick. MMcgovern will cost a bit too Gaff is worth it if we draft wisely

I'm not saying I don't want to trade Gaff, I'm saying I want more for Gaff than Mitch McGovern and a second round pick. More than happy to draft Kelly and Ryan as well, but it's a shame we didn't take the risk on Ryan in the rookie draft last year.

I can't help but wonder if the "steak knifes" = an upgrade on a first

**** that. We get bent over hard for that. Gaff is 25 and at his best a very good mid. Gov jr on the other hand is the 4th best forward in the best team in the comp an he hasn't had a super season to warrant a high price.

So you're thinking we go from say pick 10 to pick 2? I just don't see why Carlton do that, Gibbs for Gaff is basically a wash for them. We would need something extra from Adelaide in this scenario.

Yeah have been contemplating the dynamics of it, given he is under contract and previous they have wanted two first rounders think it could mean they get adelaide first rather than ours, we get their first and McGovern and Adelaide get ours and Gibbs

Is there an absolute gun midfielder we can target at 2? (I haven't looked at the draft much at all yet). That's the only way I'd do this trade but I'd rather do Lycett for McGovern and deal with Carlton directly.

Carlton
Receive: Gaff, Adelaide 2nd rd pick
Lose: Pick 2, Gibbs

West Coast
Receive: Gov Jr, Pick 2
Lose: Gaff

Adelaide
Receive: Gibbs
Lose: McGov Jr, 2nd rd pick

We win that trade, but it seems like Adelaide lose out.

Adelaide make out like bandits in that scenario and Carlton lose Pick 2 and Gibbs, not going to happen

Good point - updated.

Adelaide are going to have to give something else to Carlton - a second rounder for Gibbs?
