After thinking about it I reckon they're probably talking about Gaff going to Carlton, Gibbs to Adelaide and Gov Jnr and Adelaides 1st to us.
And then Masten to Gold Coast for a 3rd round pick.

Nah, Gaff is worth a current 4th tall forward and pick 18 easy.

Thinking only at this point, and it does seem like adelaide win but really struggling to balance it, think there may be a swap later on:
Carlton
Receive: Gaff, 18 (assume they finish top)
Lose: Pick 2, Gibbs

West Coast
Receive: Gov Jr, Pick 2
Lose: Gaff, 9

Adelaide
Receive: Gibbs, 9
Lose: McGov Jr, 18

Let's assume both Gibbs and Gaff are valued as roughly late first round picks and Gov an early second rounder.

Carlton wanted 2 first round picks last year so I would think it is more like


Carlton
Receive: Gaff, 9, 18
Lose: Pick 2, Gibbs
Basically get their 2 late first round picks but have to downgrade their existing (close to what they asked last year)

West Coast
Receive: Gov Jr, Pick 2
Lose: Gaff, 9
Effectively upgrade our first but downgrade Gaff for Gov

Adelaide
Receive: Gibbs
Lose: McGov Jr, 18
Gives up a first and early second (Gov) for what Carlton wanted 2 first round picks last year.

Gaff to Blues. Karpany to Crows (covers Cameron going to QLD club)

McGovern plus pick 18 to Eagles.

Gibbs to Crows.

Blues lose Gibbs. Gain Gaff.

Crows lose Mitch plus 18 gain Gibbs plus Karpany.

Eagles lose Gaff plus Karpany gaing Mitch plus 18.

We need to trade smart and extract maximum value out of this year's trade draft period .

I agree with about everything that you've written, however;

• Little Gov is still young, will continue to develop into a good player.
• If we get Little Gov, we certainly keep Big Gov

If Gaff really does want to go back to Victoria (and we can't talk him out of it), then I wouldn't mind Mitch + a 1st round upgrade for him in a 3 way trade. If it's a straight swap with a Victorian club, would be great to get a top 10 draft pick for him, or at least top 13 or so. You'd think that he should at least be worth more than the 1st round picks we paid for Wellingham & Redden. If Lamb wants to leave as well, perhaps he could be involved in the trade as well to get it over the line. Not sure how much value he would actually have though...

Gaff is a good accumulator and runner but has no hurt factor - he always plays the percentages and bombs the ball up the boundary. He's a reliable player but he can't run fast, break or lay a tackle, play on the inside at all or mark above his head. We need to rejuvenate the list and he is someone we should look at trading. I don't want to get bent over at the trade table but he's not Judd and we already have too many flankers who need to get moved up the ground and his spot can be filled. Mitch is worth it if we lose Gaff but get something extra as well. Jeremy McGovern is someone no one can replace and fmd if Mitch goes to freo we're in trouble.
