And yet we've had guys in the AFL team who've had disposal issues all their careers. #Runsontheboard

In fairness, of the midfield group it's only really Priddis who has had prolonged issues with his disposal. Then there is Hutchings I guess but he is playing a defensive role.

Is Partington a midfielder? The coaches don't seem to think so.
But if we are talking midfielders Gaff's disposal has been horrible for 2 years now and Masten (apart from the odd kick into 50) is pretty bad.

Wasn't Partington overlooked for his defensive side? He even said it himself in an interview earlier in the year and was one of the things he was working on.

I think the forward line is Parto's best chance of making it at AFL level personally. His ability to hit the scoreboard is what earned him a debut, rather than the mountain of possessions. Don't think he can carve out too much of a career as a vanilla mid - needs to kick goals too.

Granted Gaff's disposal was shocking this year but his workrate compensated for it somewhat. The reason behind continuing to give Gaff games would no doubt be from a desire to return him to his best form as soon as possible. So I can see why Gaff didn't get the boot for Parto. Masto did get the boot for Parto though, even if it was a week or two late.

Think it was all just bullshit pedalled by the coaches, I mean we're one of the most defensively soft sides in the league through the midfield & forward line, don't think inserting Partington a few games earlier would have made much difference. The line on Partington earlier in the season seemed to be that he was getting a lot of the ball but not doing much with it, which completely ignores the fact that it was the EP game plan at the time to run in Gerard Neesham style handball circles and not doing anything with the ball.

I'm not saying that Gaff should have been dropped for Partington, I just think it's ridiculous that the coaches would cite Partington's disposal as the reason he's not getting a game when many of the players already in the side are just as bad.
Agree that Partington needs to kick goals to stay in the side, would like to see him rotate through the midfield more than he has though.

Meh, two wrongs don't make a right.

I would like us to leave Parto in the forward flank for a while and rotate with Venables. If he can hone his craft as a goal sneak and work on his forward defensive pressure then he can find a niche.

Could be better for us than Cripps, who, unlike Parto, doesn't seem to know how to go up the ground to find the footy

Sure, but Masto has been out of the side for weeks now.
Part of the revolving door selections of older guys who aren't playing well (Masten, Wellingham, Hill, Priddis, Lecras) who just keep getting shunted in and out of the side for each other. Meanwhile we're playing just about the least amount of under 25's in the league and we're supposed to be trying to develop the team for the future.

I have been vocal about my pre-youth stance from midseason but the reality is our youth has either been injured or just not that good.

Not that good or held to higher standards than the guys already in the team before they can get a game?

Who are you talking about specifically here?

There haven't been any younger players overlooked for an extended period of time despite good form. Partington is the only example that springs to mind against the Bulldogs.

I'm talking in general about the young guys that get a few games out of their natural position, don't do that great and then get shunted back to the WAFL, or guys that don't even get a game. Mutimer, Cole, Karpany, Lamb, Nelson, Watson. Any other team in the league would have given these guys an extended run or in the case of Lamb and Watson at least given them a game or two to see what they've got. We seem to allocate 4 or 5 spots to young guys and that's it, where as other teams will carry their younger players through 5 or 6 game stints because they know they're going to be a better team in the long run for it. We play the least amount of young guys in the league, and it's actually quite scary when you look at it, we're going to pay for it big time in the next couple of years.

From last week here are the amount of under 25 year olds that each team played:

Something is very wrong with our drafting/development/team selections
heck thats bad! Even teams top of the ladder pushing for a flag have at least double.

Yeh, I'm not advocating playing all of those guys at once, but slotting in another couple at least in every game probably wouldn't have made any difference to our ladder position this year and would have helped to build for the future.

Our ladder position has killed us. We've constantly been there or thereabouts, almost making the 8, almost challenging which I reckon has resulted in a conservative mindset amongst our coaches and MC.

I don't think (I hope) they kid themselves that we really are in a position to challenge, but publicly they can't really come out and say that. Perhaps subconsciously there's also a bit of wanting to shore up their jobs.

Haha I was being flippant. I agree with you, that table is damning.

We're in absolutely no danger of going too far the other way, despite what they might say on Eagle Eye TV.
