Wellingham was one of the very few that stood up and tried to spark something v hawks in the granny.

Im a big fan of players who stand up in big games

Wellers form this season has been baffling. We really needed him to fire and instead he spent half the year butchering the ball every time he touched it. Has the pace and attack on the footy we were desperate for and shat the bed.

I reckon he just doesn't care anymore, wouldn't be surprised if he's not on our list next year

Geelong went all out a couple of years back .
Dangerfield selwood Henderson and Smith .
That's the closest I can think of . It propelled them into top 4 and a preliminary final . Top 4 finish this season also
1 decent player only in that group and without that 1 they are a rabble

Age, price, full of campaigner. He's still not the answer.

Certainly a better trade than bringing in Wellingham and Jetta

Geez thats a bet each way.

So what is the answer. And please make it realistic.

We need to improve our midfield before Kennedy and others are too old.

We need to use low picks on top kids in the draft.

So that leaves purchasing players as free agents. So who?

He's probably been on between $250k up to $650k over a career from 2008 to date. Add to that the fact that his missus' old man is seriously flushed with cash (like $150m flushed) its fair to say that's a good call that he just couldn't care less. Shows in his footy this year unfortunately.

Very true, this year he's had just about the laziest kicking I've ever seen

I think your 2 suggestions of Rockcliff and Zaharakis are the pick of the realistic free agents. Perth is a likely big no for Dusty and the next best are Motlop (another downhill skier), Suban (would like to see Masten sink his teeth into him over the summer), Duryea (more a small defender) and Trengrove (who knows with him).

That's the most frustrating part. As his WAFL highlights against Perth show he has exquisite foot skills. Too often though this year at AFL level he's been too laconic even with plenty of time and hits those lazy kicks that fall short and/or put the intended recipient under the pump.

I like the Zaharakis idea, he and Shuey are mates, and he's a goal kicker. What is his health like? Motlop's another one. With both of these guys though, I feel like it's a year late - they are what they are. and unless our system fits better, they're just band-aids.

GWS have Kelly, Devon Smith, Hopper and Kennedy all out of contract. Any of those guys would be a good/great get. We should throw the kitchen sink at Kelly!

The Ah Chee buys would be worth a crack too, at the right price.

Has his weaknesses for sure, but one thing you can't accuse him of is being a seagull. Was leading the comp in contested possessions (and tackles I think) by a fair way before doing his shoulder.
Fair call, clearly he's not at Gaff levels of Seagull.

But i'd still argue he cares very little about winning an actual game of football. Whether he's skillful enough to create scoring opportunities and just chooses not to, or simply doesn't have enough confidence in taking on the responsibility... he comes across as nothing but an accumulator.

Wouldn't be fussed either way i guess, plus side is that it'd cost nothing other than cash and we'd get 3 reasonable seasons out of him at least.

There were a couple of rumours posted a few pages back that we're making a play for Kelly.

I like zaka but he is mentally weak and I feel he isn't the best fit for our club. He easily goes to shit when tagged and doesn't even look to be trying when he gets it.

No it would make the 4 but will the club even play Venables, Cole, Rioli?
Add Barrass and that's a fair few kids with a handful of games between them.

Plus the likelihood of picking up Kelly, Rockliff, Zaharakis and Gov jnr is about as remote a chance as us winning the flag this year.
Then there's still the problem of on field leadership...

So what do you think the club do with 2-3 million on cap space?

That is literally the million dollar question that posters who don't want to bring in free agents continue to ignor.

We must spend 95 percent so do we just start paying players more than they are worth?

Sure Kelly is a stretch but the likes of Rockliff and Gov Jrn are not.

Agreed. Above all else, we need to address cultural issues in this draft. We need players with Hodge's commitment. Obviously they need the talent to play AFL.

We regularly capitulate under pressure against teams we should beat. It's partly due to a lack of this kind of strong leadership. We don't have a true captain in the squad at the moment.
Yeah guys let's just draft another Hodge...

There's always a bit of luck involved at the draft. We know that the club values positive characters, and they will draft best available with this in mind.

We can reconstruct existing contracts to front load them if we need to (quite often done and is advantageous to the player as it gives them their money earlier), but it would be a shame to waste the opportunity to spend the money on new players. Not sold on Rockliff & Zaharakis but I don't really see any other options unless we're willing to trade away picks which I don't think we should unless it is for someone like Kelly. I just hope we don't do something stupid like load up on guys like Andrew Swallow.

I think he, more than anyone, would have struggled with all the drugs stuff and dealing with last season and the "cheats" returning and Merret leapfrogging him. He should have left the club 2 seasons ago, he really needs a change of scenery now. He definitely wouldn't be tagged here. Again, depends on price. I trade EMac or Schoey for him.

He's a restricted FA so if Essendon don't want to match we can get him for free. You're right though, he should have left 2 years ago and I think he would have been allowed to get out of his contract as well.
