Probably more likely that the board has turned to shit recently.

Anyway. Not fussed over Mitch McGovern, especially when Jake Waterman seems a similar type (ala third tall forward) and is showing something at WAFL level despite missing most of the year with injury.

McGovern

But Kelly -

The only things stopping us from getting McGovern Jnr would be the money.

Definitely not worth $700k+ a season.

Use the money on a gun mid instead.

Which gun mid?

We also have over $2m to spend on new players, so who?

I don't have an issue playing Gov Jnr $700k as Le cras was on $650k before the increase in salary cap and a lot of people can see Mitch reaching that level in output and therefore value. Sure it's paying him top dollar before he's consistently delivered that level of form but he has shown he has the talent. When a quality player moves clubs they get a pay rise as the club shopping needs to win their services with other clubs interested.

What we do not want is to use our first pick for McGovern, that MUST be used on a quality mid in the draft. A Brayshaw / Clark who can contribute sooner rather than later.

Close to the perfect trade / draft period IMO would be this.

  1. Pick 9 Brayshaw / Hunter Clark
  2. Pick 27 + 2018 1st rounder for Mitch McGovern + Crows 2017 1st say pick 17
  3. Pick 17 from Crows - now this is the pick that could really set us up....or not. Around 17 (+/- 3 rankings) we would have the choice of Hunter Clark / Louchie O'Brien / Charlie Constable / Oscar Allan / Joel Garner. I left out the Lions academy Ballenden and he's a 199cm forward.
  4. Pick 45 - Kelly or another mature WAFL / VFL mid
  5. Bring in Rockliff as a FA.
  6. Somehow with other player trades we can land Liam Ryan with another 3rd rounder.
  7. With either a late pick in the draft or rookie draft we pick up a project 200+cm ruck to develop.
So in order our inclusions would be Brayshaw (9), Clark / O'Brien (17), Kelly (45), Liam Ryan (3rd/4th rounder), M McGovern + 2017 pick 17 (traded for 2017 pick 27 + 2018 1st), Rockliff (FA) and a 200+cm project ruck.

To those who get nervous about trading the 2018 1st for a 2017 pick 17 if we land a Clark or O'Brien it's worth it. People who get spooked that 2018 1st will be a top 5 pick I think it will be closer to 17 than pick 5 with the above player movements and our 2017 draftees contributing something PLUS getting our rucks back.

Mc Gov isn't a forward and isn't effective in the ruck. He is a brilliant intercept mark in defence but not great one on one and can be easily countered by a smart mid field. In general play he is slow to assess situations and doesn't offer a spring board.

Sad to lose him but certainly not the end of the world . Thu hiss trade value would be higher than his playing value to us thanks for Fox.
He's lost the fewest one on ones in the league. Watch choo talking bout wilis.

Forget about Le cras in any discussions, he is in the same group as Priddis and Mitchell.

But to say that we give up on a flag whilst Kennedy and Naitanui as still on the list is dead set defeatist crazy talk.

Stop putting your strategy around Kelly or Dusty, there are 17 clubs chasing those players and we would need to "sell the farm" to land one of them.

This season we got zero games out of the 2017 draftees due to injury. We need to draft carefully this year and target stronger, bigger mids like SPP who can make a contribution straight away. So in 2018 we have Venebles, Rioli, say Bradshaw or Hunter Clark, a couple of mature agers like Kelly from WA and a Ryan tupe. Added to those we have Naitanui and Lycett hopefully getting a decent run with injury PLUS the likes of Barrass, Partington, Cole, Mutimer, Waterman, Watson, Nelson and Rotham improving.

Thats 15 players we should expect to contribute more next year than 2017.

The likes of Masten and Wellingham can bugger off and enjoy there instagram lifestyles.

Bringing in one trade or FA is another legitimate way of improving in 2018 and 19 before Kennedy is done.

Talking full rebuild with a new coach is rubbish.
If we need to sell the farm to land a gun mid who wants a flag while JK and Nic are still around then so be it. If we're gonna have a crack and the club are happy backing in Simmo then have a crack.

Topping up with injury prone players like Rockliff isn't going to work. The B graders we've traded our first round picks for are just that. B graders.

We want to have a proper crack then get that A grade mid.

As for the kids. Yes we need to play them round 1. If they show something they stay no questions.

I can't think of any A grade mid in the comp that would have any interest coming to us.
I think there is something wrong within the organisation that players are reluctant to join us unless it's just a lifeline to prolong their career.
Even ex WA boys don't seem to be keen to join us.
There has to be more to this than we all know.

Say if we were to trade Gaff (not that I am advocating it at this stage), as he is out of contracted and a restricted free agent next year.

What do you guys we would get/should get for him?

am talking about the forwards that lead and destroy him. He is a loose defender though and thats an important role

he arguably directly cost us two games as he can not tackle or cut out a player (and I know its a 4 qtr game but clutch points cost)

Your still not getting the point.

If it was that easy to land a gun mid like Dusty or Kelly why haven't we done it......EVER!

These is no one trade silver bullet to fix our list. It will take several draftees and one or two trades or FA's.

To be fair, I don't know if we've ever had a genuine chance like this before now.
Lots of free moola can do wonders.

I actually think we're going to land a big fish this trade period but then again I'm generally a glass half full kind of guy.

A player like Acres and steak knives.

A pick between say 7 and 12 plus steak knives.

Saints have two first rounders and Gaff would be almost a clone replacement for Montagna.

Gaff plus Lamb for one of the Saints first plus a 2nd rounder would be close.

Lamb as a Riewaldt type fits the Saints needs. Both players to add instant impact next season.

No a club / location of destination and nothing is being done to change it

Fair enough we do have more cap space this year to attract someone. Only problem is so do several other clubs like Norths, Saints and Hawks.

Not a destination club?

True we havent been for young talent but a couple of things we are changing.

Mitchell as a assistent coach I think may help. The likes of him and ever Petrie coming over to play is another.

The biggest plus I'm hoping will help is the new stadium and then our new training facilities. Just hope we incorporate some WOW factor in those.

We also need to really start looking after players post retirement, sets up a culture of support post retirement.

I know we have extra room in the salary cap but not convinced that overpaying a free agent is the way to go with this.

Think about it this way, your boss at work employs new staff that you know they are getting paid more than you without doing anything more or better. Certainly wouldn't motivate me to work any harder, and with the mental fragility shown by some on our list, I could see this doing more damage than good.

If a free agent is available at a reasonable price by all means pay them, but not sure if any of them exist. So my preference would be to restructure existing contracts, front loaded to those who have been performing, be prepared for significant pay rises to guys like Gov, Yeo, Barrass next year or so and invest in the draft.

Hopefully we can make the cap space work for us in years to come not just overpaying a B grade scrub this year

Pick 27 + 2018 1st rounder for Mitch McGovern + Crows 2017 1st say pick 17

Why would Adelaide do this? Seems like they trading their first rounder this year for a first rounder (with NN back this could be something like 11-18 anyway) next year and getting pick 27 for Gov Jnr in the process.
