If Matera is being courted and we land him,

How do we fit the following players in, jostling for the same position:

Lecras
Rioli
Matera

Reckon it's a good time to gamble with our 2018 first pick. I believe we will be back in the top 8 next year but out of 17 other list managers there might be one that has us sliding, hence adding more value to that pick. Its obviously hard to pick teams that are going to drop but I like what the saints did last year with the Hawks pick. It can really set you up if you get it right and back your own team in to climb the ladder.

Big game from Oscar Allen in a hiding for West Perth's colts.

1 goal, 17 kicks, 11 handballs, 7 marks, a hitout and most impressively, 10 tackles.

Wouldn't solve our midfield problems but the lad clearly has talent. Worth a look around our second pick maybe?

I can't think of any A grade mid in the comp that would have any interest coming to us.
I think there is something wrong within the organisation that players are reluctant to join us unless it's just a lifeline to prolong their career.
Even ex WA boys don't seem to be keen to join us.
There has to be more to this than we all know.
Simple - it's the travelling! Most players aren't going to want to come West and have to travel every 2nd week when they can can get a gig over East. The only chance normally is to get a homegrown player who wants to come home. Redden is the only exception I can think of and possibly Yeo had something to do with that? However in the past the Club has always gone to the draft and it has been fairly successful, however times have now changed when players can now swap to a new Club, like a cattle sale:rolleyes:. Also the Club is not willing to overpay for a player who is only mediocre, like Freo do!

They see how the club is being run

Should go hard at Acres.
Agree, he's increased his value though in the last few months, I still think we should look at Gaff and something for Acres and a Saints first rounder but I think the something we throw in is going to have to be more than just steak knives now.

Which gun mid?

We also have over $2m to spend on new players, so who?

I don't have an issue playing Gov Jnr $700k as Le cras was on $650k before the increase in salary cap and a lot of people can see Mitch reaching that level in output and therefore value. Sure it's paying him top dollar before he's consistently delivered that level of form but he has shown he has the talent. When a quality player moves clubs they get a pay rise as the club shopping needs to win their services with other clubs interested.

What we do not want is to use our first pick for McGovern, that MUST be used on a quality mid in the draft. A Brayshaw / Clark who can contribute sooner rather than later.

Close to the perfect trade / draft period IMO would be this.

  1. Pick 9 Brayshaw / Hunter Clark
  2. Pick 27 + 2018 1st rounder for Mitch McGovern + Crows 2017 1st say pick 17
  3. Pick 17 from Crows - now this is the pick that could really set us up....or not. Around 17 (+/- 3 rankings) we would have the choice of Hunter Clark / Louchie O'Brien / Charlie Constable / Oscar Allan / Joel Garner. I left out the Lions academy Ballenden and he's a 199cm forward.
  4. Pick 45 - Kelly or another mature WAFL / VFL mid
  5. Bring in Rockliff as a FA.
  6. Somehow with other player trades we can land Liam Ryan with another 3rd rounder.
  7. With either a late pick in the draft or rookie draft we pick up a project 200+cm ruck to develop.
So in order our inclusions would be Brayshaw (9), Clark / O'Brien (17), Kelly (45), Liam Ryan (3rd/4th rounder), M McGovern + 2017 pick 17 (traded for 2017 pick 27 + 2018 1st), Rockliff (FA) and a 200+cm project ruck.

To those who get nervous about trading the 2018 1st for a 2017 pick 17 if we land a Clark or O'Brien it's worth it. People who get spooked that 2018 1st will be a top 5 pick I think it will be closer to 17 than pick 5 with the above player movements and our 2017 draftees contributing something PLUS getting our rucks back.
seriously you have had half a dozen of these scenarios . It must take ages to crunch all these numbers , sort out the list needs and jungle all the picks .
I'm impressed but I wish I had as much free time as you

Watching Roos vs Lions, Mountford looks like an impressive young player.

I would love with our second, but thought people more knowledgeable than I, expect he won't last until then.

I fully expect him to be there and our recruiters to overlook him, then a few years from now will be an A grade star

We'll target him if he grows another cm or so before the draft. We need him to still be growing to be that #1 KPF to replace Kennedy, we already have enough 2nd/3rd talls.

Why would Adelaide do this? Seems like they trading their first rounder this year for a first rounder (with NN back this could be something like 11-18 anyway) next year and getting pick 27 for Gov Jnr in the process.

Sure if I were the Crows I would counter that with stuff your 2018 first we will take your 2017 pick 9 plus 27 for McGovern plus pick 17.

Obviously both clubs are trying to get the best deal they can. Eagles 2018 pick could end up being a top 5 pick however depending where they finish which would be a nice upgrade for the Crows.

McGovern is a tough trade as our picks arent quite right, 9 is too low and 27 wont be fair either. So some form of pick upgrades or a player is needed.

If Charlie Cameron leaves as well then the likes of Partington and even Karpany can come into consideration as that would be two medium forwards the Crows need to replace.

It can't simply be travelling, this is a professional comp and if you are a player and are given the right offer I just can't see the travelling making you knock back the offer. I'm not saying it wouldn't be considered though.
I honestly don't think we actually even talk to some of these A grade mids who are looking to move. You never hear about the Eagles talking to player x management.
Right now I reckon we are simply viewed as a club with not much going for it. Stale and reluctant to change.

If we need to sell the farm to land a gun mid who wants a flag while JK and Nic are still around then so be it. If we're gonna have a crack and the club are happy backing in Simmo then have a crack.

Topping up with injury prone players like Rockliff isn't going to work. The B graders we've traded our first round picks for are just that. B graders.

We want to have a proper crack then get that A grade mid.

As for the kids. Yes we need to play them round 1. If they show something they stay no questions.

You cant compare topping up with a FA that costs no draft picks to B graders traded in costing first round picks.

Especially when we have more cap space than we know what to do with.

The flying is a factor. Its been proven to shorten careers. I dont like flying, popped down to Perth last weekend, down Friday, back Monday and my lower back is still struggling. Just think how you feel after getting smashed in a game of AFL every week.

We should pull out of the comp then, we do not get any priority access to WA players and no one wants to fly in a national comp lol

am talking about the forwards that lead and destroy him. He is a loose defender though and thats an important role

he arguably directly cost us two games as he can not tackle or cut out a player (and I know its a 4 qtr game but clutch points cost)

wtf are you on about, I'd say he's close to our best tackler. He has absolutely buried a few players this year. His tackle is what started the whole Melbourne vs Schofield fiasco

Need a 3 goal win tomorrow to play finals. Anyone know if East Perth game is on TV today?

The draft is obviously the way to go - all we need is to reassess our development coaches as some have not come on in the way they should have. Overall we have a very inexperienced coaching staff - can't remember this having happened before to the extent it is now? Also we don't really know what's happening behind the scenes - not all businesses let all and sundry know what negotiations are taking place behind the scenes.

That's the reality mate - if one has a choice then they will go for whichever is going to be less taxing on their bodies so they can extend their careers. You just need to ask Bluey McKenna as to whether flying shortened his career or not. He's adamant that it did.
