Definitely much better than waiting until Gov is a FA next year and accepting whatever the AFL hands out to us. Need to ask Gov straight away whether he wants to stay with us for the rest of his career or if he wants to eventually move to Freo. No point trying to get him to stay if he doesn't want to be here. Might as well get maximum return for him if it's inevitable that he will leave in the next couple of years. That being said I hope that Adelaide re-signs Mitch to a long term deal...
According to Hagdorn this morning, WCE offered J Gov a contract extension but he is waiting to see what Gov Jnr is doing before he re-signs with us.

I'd have the following guys as worse picks ( even taking into account where they were selected )

Todd Breman #2
Peter Higgins #10
Shane Porter #12
Shane Sikora #12
Brendon Fewster #3
Luke Trew #14
Jaxon Crabb #12
Brandon Hill #10
Andrew McDougall #5
Tony Notte #20
Tom Swift #20
Gerrick Weedon #22
Murray Newman #23

A few others that are border line but the ones above stood out to me.

Todd Breman is the best kick of the footy to ever play at our club.

Maybe but he played only 23 illustrious games with us.
I consider this a bust for a very high pick.

Maybe....recruiting wasn't the professional art is is these days....and we still can't get it right :D

Breman had been killing it at Subiaco as a Dunstall like smallish FF who could kick a drop punt easily 65 metres. Was pure poetry to watch

Shoulda coulda woulda son.

Jason McCartney, "architect of the Bulldogs' premiership list", is reportedly out of contract. We should be right into him.

Just to put it in perspective, those 13 guys between them probably wouldn't have played as many games for the club as Masten has.

Haven't we approached McCartney many times before and he's always said no?

Who the hell is Brandon Hill?

Oh GF..... I dont think you really want to know.........It will make you sick.

Because he is just the guy in the 1988 AFL Draft that we selected at pick 10.

And then Lenny Hayes went at pick 11 to St Kilda.

Just to make matters worse Hill never played a senior game for the Eagles and was delisted 2 years latter.

Other than that just a minor drafting F*** Up.

Yeh I looked it up after that, wtf happened?
And if that was now we wouldn't have bothered delisting him, would have just sat him on the rookie list for the next 5 years.

I didn't mention Mackenzie
Not saying you did. Was just throwing out a general question to anyone that didn't think McKenzie was worth keeping on the list mid season. Has his recent form changed any minds?

I'll answer your Gorter question. Gorter filled the gap left by Mitch Brown. Brown was offered a contract for this year but took too long committing so West Coast took the contract off the table. There were concerns with tall defenders that remained, McKenzie injury & form, Schofield form, Barras other concerns. Gorter was a defender already playing the game style and knew the setups and was playing well. So Gorter was picked up as a stop gap and pipped at least one Melbourne based club who were interested.

This year he has gone backwards which is not unusual when it comes to players in West Coasts development program.

Liam Ryan may have been the pick but all 18 clubs overlooked him with concerns if he would actually rock up to training on a regular basis.

We took Michael O'Brien with our next pick. He only managed two more games than Hill. Stenglein went three picks later :(

Not a great year, 1998.

Shane Sikora, the guy who came over and in his first press conference said he was just as good as Peter Matera...just weeks after the 94 grand final.

Yes it was a shocker the only saving grace was that we took Andrew Embley at 57.

Sorry thought you were responding to me.
Mackenzie's been good defensively but still horrible with the ball in hand, that being said I'm fine with keeping him as depth as long as we're not paying him anywhere near what he was on before.
Was there a gap left by Mitch Brown? I think it's a position that didn't really need to be filled and this pick will come back to bite us when Ryan goes somewhere else in the draft. Understand concerns with him but that's largely what the rookie list should be for, taking a risk.

We should be looking to trump Fremantle's offer for Wilson if they want to break the bank for McGovern. Purple ******s.
Would love a player like Wilson but he is a cream on top of a cake type player. Better investing in a young kid.

Someone close to tom reckons they have stifled his game.He is not going for his marks like last year.I agree his form hasn't been good as last year.Tom is not the only orphan in the backline. they all will need to improve if any of them want to step up and play Afl next year.

Did notice this. Also when they ran through the banner he was up the front with Priddis and getting pats on the back from teammates. Really felt like he was playing his last (home) game.
In eyes it might have been, especially if the club told him they would wait until the end of the year before offering him another contract.

Given the retirements - I would think he stays, but the conversation will need to be had that he may need to play at EP next year if his form warrants it.

Side note, anyone that reckons Barrass can't play one on one can GAGF. His body work yesterday was great, he's clearly learning the trade.
He was brilliant in that last quarter in particular.

1998 was bad, bar Embley. 1997 was pretty poor draft too. I believe those were the years Malthouse was front and centre of picks... Crabb and Chambers over Black and Stephens.... Antonwicz... at least we got Read, Fletcher and Williams.
