Re: Andrew Gaff for those interested.

Edit (inserted) - only a throw away line at 1.10 mark. Some discussion on Mayne, Hartung, David Teague (ex Eagle coach)
If this is true it seems unusually aggressive from us.
Somethings cookin' in the kitchen and I like the smell.

They probably got the rumour from here. Seriously.

If it was true maybe Gaff has told the club he is looking to go back to Melbourne in the future so if we can get a trade now we will.
I think we've all known Gaff was going back home eventually. Haven't we?

That's fair enough, he's obviously a risk on several levels. My point is this though, what would we have lost by having Ryan on the list instead of Gorter? Absolutely nothing imo, the potential gain of having Ryan on the rookie list from last year far outweighs the risk that he might not cope with AFL football when the only difference is that we wouldn't have had the chance to draft Gorter.
We also have more resources than a WAFL team do to assist a young indigenous player such as Ryan to make the transition. Being as conservative as we are I can see why we didn't draft him last year, I still think it was the wrong move.
What would you rather a highly talented guy who can't handle it and quits or spends the season needing time away from the club .
or
A guy with less talent but has a great work ethic and gives it everything all the time .

Guess our list management chose the guy who wanted it

And when he's delisted this year or next we'll be in exactly the same position as if we'd chosen the guy who might not be able to handle it and quits. One guy isn't AFL grade talent, one guy looks like he is but might not be able to handle it. I know which player I'd rather have on the list.

Mountford played inside mid for a chunk of his time at Claremont colts. Stood up in the colts Grand Final win with 25 disposals, 2 goals and 8 tackles. I was disappointed we went Mutimer instead of Mountford at the time. He is from Albany so another mate for Gov!!!!
That's the Victorian side of our recruiting taking priority right there

18 clubs thought he couldn't handle it .

It reminds me of the dayle garlett snub by all the clubs . He was extremely talented also

for ryan or garlett ?
Ryan.
Look, I can certainly see the argument for not picking Ryan. I guess my real issue is that with the way we've used our rookie list the last few years. To not be able to pick one decent previously undrafted player since Sinclair in 2012 is very poor imo and it's mainly because we rarely pick any high risk/high reward type guys which is what I think the majority of the rookie list should be used for.

Back a few years ago when O'meara was coming onto the scene in juniors at the U16 level there was another who was touted as being of a similar talent level and future ability. His name is Chris Yarran. Made some bad choices, was apart of the wrong crowd growing up, failed to develop and saw him go from being rated directly against the top young talent of his year (by some judges the best young talent of a decade) to going undrafted and unheard of.

Commitment is everything and makes up a huge part of whether someone will or won't make it. There are probably a 1000 kids every year with the talent to be drafted to the AFL, 10% get drafted and roughly 33% of those drafted make some sort of career out of it. While you have to have the athletic ability to make it, mental application, determination and the ability to be taught make up a very large part of whether someone will do well.

Now a player who isn't that great but has had a decent career for Essendon is Ben Howlett. Grew up in a country town, went through the colts program with another player who was just as talented as he was and probably slightly more athletically gifted. Now Ben got the snub at the draft but put his head down, smashed out some great results in the WAFL, got drafted and has had a decent career. All through determination. The other kid is the same age, spent some time playing country football while going through Uni and has had 3 careers all before the age of 30. Watching them growing up (they are some years younger than me) you could see that determination in their mentality all the way through. The lesser talent has been successful while the other is a nobody.

Jarred Schofield urging Eagles to recruit Ryan to compliment Rioli .

" Imagine Liam Ryan and Willie Rioli together ," Schofield said " They could be anything ."

Wonder if the Eagles will take the option should Ryan be available , will be interesting at draft time although Fremantle will have better picks once again . Either way im not too concerned , Ryan would be fantastic but we do like our tall forwards and has worked well ...not sure we need two small forwards , one star small forward could be enough .

Two would be brilliant, I think. Look at the Tigers this year.

I am a bit late to the party but why wouldn't we draft Ryan? bad work ethic and professionalism?
