We shouldnt be going through the draft, we should be trading our draft picks for solid players. Unless these draft picks come in and average 25 touches a game we shouldnt be doing this. If we do we wont achieve anything. Our best three players are going to be 30, 29 and 28 next year. What does this signals, these players may not be around when these draftees become stars and we are doing what richmond and bulldogs used to be good at and that is draft players who become stars when one half of the team is too old to play

Trade in solid players such as who exactly?

Tim Kelly is a mature age draftee mid who can play round 1.

Kids such as Higgins, Clark and Worple will be playing and making an impact early in their careers.

You can't trade in B graders and expect to improve, that's not how it works. A more balanced approach is needed and multiple 2nd rounders gives you that flexibility.

We really need to win 'draft loto' again and a rookie turns into an A Grader. Waston perhaps?:thumbsu:

Pick 7 is no garrantee of a good player let alone a great player like gaff .

Thats the thing Gaffy gives a known quality each week ...pick 7 could be a star player but the likelihood of finding a player as productive and reliable as Gaffy would be 20-30% chance . Sometimes you need to take risk I suppose , but I have become very attached to keeping Gaffy at WCE but wait and see .

Best 3 players will be 31, 28 and 28 next year with a solid core of 26ish year olds behind them. Where we fall down is in the next group, the 21/22 year olds who should be coming through just aren't there because of our poor drafting. Can't see what assets we really have to trade with to fix this so we're stuck with (hopefully smart) drafting.

I feel like gaff has taken priddis role as whipping boy. Being blamed for our failings as a midfield group and not recognized for all he brings.
What makes you say that? I haven't seen anyone say anything that's not true unless you're not willing to admit that Gaff has some flaws in his game. Haven't seen anything overly negative even. I think most would be happy enough if he stayed, but if he wants to go home he's a good trade asset to use.

Gaff has not taken over at all. He is being discussed because he is a free agent next year, clubs are circling and to get a top 10 draft pick you have to give up a quality player and also hope for extras.

Thats why Gaff is being discussed.

The whipping boy is Darling which I think is wrong. Get a better midfield supply to Darling and Kennedy and watch out. They were to most productive forward pair this year with poor supply.

Like I said I hope he stays. If we got overs as previously suggested, like Gaff and 30 for 7 and Acres I would take it. But St Kilda wouldn't do that deal.

Who in our current side plays Gaffs role if he leaves?

Id like to see Nelson given a run off the wing.

Also have Duggan, Partington, Jetta, Cole or even Watson to run through there.

If we were really trying something different we also have Lamb or even Rotham as taller wingers not to mention Darling with Vardy playing forward.

I would use the opportunity to change our midfield dynamics. We need to change something to improve.

Do we have an ou and out young wingman on our list?

The problem with draft smart is that if your list doesnt match your going to have to either rebuild or go all in. We have the solid players like they did, our best rising players arent midfielders or key forwards, they are defenders. Mcgovern and Yeo. Nic Nat has one or two years left, without his athleticism and his x factor he is a sub grade ruckmen which means this his final years, Shuey is a top player but he isnt the type player who has something about him like bonts, hodge, martin, fyfe, danger, sloane, and kennedy is yes 31. Our solid 26 year old are all backmen which leaves the whole midfield and the small forwards as our main worry, so like carlton/richmond/essendon.brisbane of old when they were mediocre. Drafted some really solid players like deledio, jobe watson, marc murphy, bryce gibbs, zorko but didnt have a solid 18 to back up and look at their team. Years and Years of crap.

Right now we arent missing much, another inside mid like aaron hall and (Pls get sam mitchell to play on), another solid winger and a solid half forward/midfielder. We should really go all in next year, dont even go through the draft. Get Rocky on a 1 year deal, aaron hall is on the board. Play Mcgovern as the 3rd man/FB up and let yeo and hurn do all the rebounding like geelong did with their team. (I am talking about scarlett, harley, enright, mackie and taylor). If we dont win in two years we can just do a rebuild. We use next year draft picks and the year after to draft a solid young midfield/key position players and develop them so in 2 or 3 years time we will have a solid teams of 22/23 years old, like the dynasty that freo, ade, wb, gws are going to have. All 4 teams, have a group 7 or 8 players all around the same age and it going to be good to watch those 4 to go at it

We may just need to draft kids and or mature players who wont take as long to contribute.

Pick 7 or 8 may get us a Higgins who plays the small forward part time mid role. Reports are he will be ready to play year 1.

Same goes for a Brayshaw or Clark or Worple. These kids are bigger and better prepared than kids were 10 years ago.

Look at SPP.

Problem with that is he is not an inside mid, doesn't relish the contact. Sure get him but don't expect him to play inside mid. On the outside he could be quite an asset.

Aaron Hall averaged less contested possessions and less clearances than Andrew Gaff this year, wouldn't call him an inside mid.
Assuming Hall is worth a second rounder what do we do with the rest of our picks? Who would you target with them in trades?
