I'm not a Jack Higgins fan for pick 13. I'd be pleased if he went before our pick and pushed someone else back.

Of course, he's pretty ready made and should play in 2018 but I'm not sold on his upside.

Should we start preparing for the inevitable reality that Higgins won't be available at pick 13?

Knightmare's latest power rankings has him at 8th.

Higgins would have been a good mid to long term Gaff replacement. If Gaff stays we need to address the inside mid roles which is a Hunter Clark or Brayshaw type mid.

Higgins is a quality HFF small mid. We need some size, speed and firepower in close and I feel we can get that with pick 13. Sure they wont be the top ranked mids but we need more grunt and aggression rather than a Farrari that goes fast, looks good but cant hack the rough stuff.

Does the success of Vardy mean we can push back the need to draft a key forward in the first two rounds another year?

It probably does, so we jump the gun and take Kelly with our second rounder if not a late first. He'll instantly make us better and is something we lack - goal kicking mid.

I think so.

Lets say JK miss's through injury next year we can cover him with Darling, Vardy , Nic Nat & Lycett and in a pinch Gov. There is also a chance players like Waterman, Lamb and Allen could even step up and offer some scoring power.

So yes this year we need to go mids mids and more mids.

2018/2019 we need to go hard on another KF, KD & a ruckman.

I'm ok with frase getting another year ONLY if we keep him on the rookie list.

I can see us wasting another late pick to upgrade him, only for him to never actually play another game for us and be delisted two years later.

Meanwhile we will look back at the draft in a few years and wonder how so and so team managed to snag so and so gun player late in the draft, after the pick we used to upgrade someone who should have been delisted years ago.

This has killed our drafting and list management all decade and I can see the trend continue unfortunately.

The 2018 draft has some real quality talls in it so if we want elite, then we best delay pulling the trigger early this year.

As for this year, prior to the combine I was keen on taking Ben Miller as a late pick. He performed very well at the combine so his stocks may have risen which is a pity as I saw him available around the 4th round. He is a genuine tall forward that can spend time in ruck.

Sitting around our second pick will be some choices. We will have the likes Charlie Spargo or Dylan Moore who are genuine players that could be smaller forward with a decent turn in the midfield. Maybe a Lochlan Fogarty as a really solid inside mid. Who knows, Oscar Allen as a taller forward may be a slider. Sam Taylor is a KPD is someone I would be happy taking him with our 3rd if still there and assuming 2 midfielders (he may be taken earlier).

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Talk about highway robbery.
Haha, then we're on the same track, but having finally managed a whole season he's starting to show some promise again. Maybe it was playing juniors for a couple years, but I don't think you'd be disappointed to keep him.

For a small forward he barely hits the scoreboard. Cripps was far more prolific in 2017 than Colyer which is saying something...
He plays up the ground a bit. Had a couple of big games early, tired later on. First season of >11 games and still has that special pace. Definitely underwhelming career so far, but time to turn it around. Would only entertain a trade if he nominated us (i.e. no).

Colyer to WC is just connect the dots journalism, IMO. Fringe player who comes from WA must be looking to come home. Fremantle has their hands full and we aren't that active so we must be looking for someone, anyone to come play for us.

If they want to get Saad, stringer and smith, they will need to give up Francis or trade away the draft picks for the next couple of years, not trade away a guy that won't be best 22 when those above are in the side.
