If Jake Lever is worth two first round picks then Gov is worth at least 3 first round picks.

And if they offered that and he was keen the deal would happen.

The Gov talk has come from some murmurs yesterday that Adelaide want him.

And they are free to make an offer, just like we are free to laugh at it.

And those "murmurs" almost certainly have come from those Twitter accounts that between them haven't nailed anything at all in over 12 months. In fact, one of them saying Gov is going to leave is almost confirmation he'll be an Eagle for life

Think it has always come down to we were contending in 2016/17 so they wanted to play more experience.

2018 we are expected to fall down the ladder so i think the club will at least gives these players an extended run... I hope.

Yeah but we were better with him in there, that was my point. Then we stick him down back and shove all the old blokes back in there and go back to the worlds slowest midfield again and dont contend for the flag anyway. I would have kept the youth.

Simpson preaches versatility all the time - can Jamie Cripps play any other position except that defensive forward role?
Ditto:

Hurn
Sheppard
Mackenzie
Barrass
Masten
Gaff
Redden
Darling
LeCras
Hill
Hutchings

Can any of the above be effective in another role?

I'd trade McGovern to Adelaide for picks 10 and 16.
It would hurt my soul, but it's a smart move for our footy club. (It basically guarantees Higgins AND Clark too).
I wouldn't. I just don't think you trade away your A Grade talent for potential. Sure, if he was desperate to leave then that is a different issue, a deal would have to be done. But I don't think potential 10 and potential 16 is worth losing Gov for.

Ditto:

Hurn - Mainly HB but can push up
Sheppard - Used to be a HF before going back
Mackenzie
Barrass - Defence/Forward (done it at WAFL level)
Masten - Wing/HF
Gaff - has played more inside before although not brilliantly
Redden - Mid/HF
Darling - FF/HF/Ruck
LeCras - F/mid
Hill - F/HF/Cameos on the HB/wing
Hutchings - Defensive Mid/HF

Can any of the above be effective in another role?

Depends on how much you rate Barrass, Schofield, Mackenzie (and Yeo to an extent) and their longevity.

A few pro-leagues in the US use a random advanced stat called Games/Wins Above Replacement as a measure of basically how good someone is compared to a player of common skills available for minimum cost in the same position. If a club has a number of players with higher G/WAR (come on, make the jokes) value then it is in a strong position to trade some of that talent away. It might be a fair assessment that we have a higher level of key defender stocks, and a history of production, which might mean Gov or Barrass are expendable.

Likewise G/WAR might point out where the club overrates certain players, in comparison to others already on the list, that might be deemed valuable to other clubs.

The AFL and its fans are still to shake off the one-club mantra of loyalty which is purely an old fashioned convenience, and move into a more modern and professional method of roster management. The Lever situation is a perfect case of the outdated rules around player movement, and public outcry that is generated. It is a also a decent example of lack of professionalism among AFL players where many refuse to continue working for a club that is not in their home state - also highlighting a significant advantage for Victorian based clubs.

I completely agree on Lever and posted something in another thread about it and the reaction being ridiculous. That said, I think we have very few genuine A grade players with a pretty big drop off to serviceable players. I wouldn't be trading one of our A graders for potential, even if that potential covers a need. McGovern is the full package, can play multiple positions with very few, if any limitations. I don't see it as a step forward trading him for two mid/late first round picks. It could be, if they both work out being guns but if they end up being duds, we go backwards. Some may take that risk, I wouldn't.

Hurn - Mainly HB but can push up
So he's the same as any other medium defender.
Sheppard - Used to be a HF before going back
So he's the same as any other medium defender.
Barrass - Defence/Forward (done it at WAFL level)
WAFL != AFL. But it would be good to see if he could be another swingman. There's potential that is not yet realised.
Masten - Wing/HF
Redden - Mid/HF
Hutchings - Defensive Mid/HF
All general midfielders who sometimes kick goals. None of them (except maybe Hutchings) play a continued small/medium forward role like LeCras / Cripps. I've left Sheed out of this group because he has been playing the medium forward role, likewise Duggan playing the medium defender.
Darling - FF/HF/Ruck
Effective ruck? Hardly. He's a (not so) tall forward.
LeCras - F/mid
Frenchie's not playing midfield. He doesn't attend bounces or create clearances. He's a medium forward.
Hill - F/HF/Cameos on the HB/wing
So he's a medium forward. Who pops up for a ripper game once or twice a year.

Is it because Essendon is interested in lot of players?
I like that there's supposedly interest from the Saints in D.Smith. Might get things moving.

On the WCE front, can anyone realistically see the club doing deals other than for Ah Chee, and possibly letting Lamb go for more opportunity?

Not worth it IMO. He's probably the most valuable player on our list, If the Crows think Lever is worth 2 first round picks, then 25 y.o dual AA in Mcgovern has to be worth 3 and one would have to be top 10. Otherwise it would need to be 2 top 10 picks, or it isn't even worth entertaining the idea. The guy will be the best defender in the game in the coming years and also has the versatility to play up forward if need be.

Exactly. The inability to play in more than one position was a problem for Priddis (correct call was made in the end) but it does not seem to be a problem for none of these guys who together add up to more than half the team.

Lamb is uncontracted. No one has offered even a 4 th round maybe if someone does it will be a pick 88 on the last trade day. Collingwood might give him a go but he doesnt have the forward pressure Maine has. How did that work out.

North Melbourne's Sam Gibson is not happy about his de-listing after playing 130 consecutive games . He says he's got at least three to four more years to offer a club and would love to be able to plead his case in a face-to-face meeting .

Really we need to do this , a handy midfielder who gives 100 % knows Drew Petrie , Brady Rawlings ....be prepared !!

Not going to let this one go !!
Are you high?

I've been catching up. Got to page 472 and three up. So our backline next year could be:

Hurn Gov Mullett
Gibson Barrass Suban

Nah Gov's off to Adelaide
