Anyone else think the club is looking to drop down the ladder next year?

Hitting the draft fairly hard if we are looking to take 5 picks inside 50, and if Gaff does end up leaving next year you would prefer a FA pick after the first round to be as close to 1 as possible?

Rioli will be massive for us.
I'm one of the few with tempered expectations.

Still think he isn't that perfect crumbing/speedy forward like Garlett and Cameron we need, but still an upgrade on what we've got.

When I look at the draft, I can see the desire for trading pick 13. 2 things need to be on the agenda.

1. If Doggies are keen, then they will pay a premium. So picks 25 and 30 from Essendon are the equivalent of pick 10 purely on points. That is not a huge premium so more needed. Add in 28 and sell off 50 and the net points equates to about pick 6 . Now I am interested.

2. The biggest issue is whether there are a couple midfielder that will fall to us at the draft. I had hoped for us to get Brayshaw (firming fast), Coffield (was hoping), Constable (possibly) and Clark (he is probably the most variable). I do not want O'Brien (the draft prospect not the incompetent recruiter) - he is an outside mid with loads of skill but not where we really fall short.

If we cannot get one of the above mids, then I would take 3 picks for our 13 and we would have 4 quality picks in the 25 to 32 range.

Targets
Inside mid - Worpel, L Fogarty, Kelly (also adds speed)
Smaller mids that also play forward - Moore, Spargo
Talls - Allen or Taylor

If Rawlings does his job, he will look at the risk of missing out on what we need. Coming away with L Fogarty, Kelly, Spargo and Taylor sure feels like a good draft. Plus we keep our R1 2018 pick in tact.

It just comes down to how desperate Doggies are and whether O'Brien has done his job. The last part of this is a problem as he was the over-riding vote to forego The Pepper Shaker for Venables!

I'm just saying that getting the best kid isn't necessarily the best option.
If we get an offer that we can't refuse, we'd be negligent to not trade down for it.

I guess we just disagree on what a good offer is.
If we get pick 9 involved I'm keen. Even if we trade out next years pick. Live in the now. Worry about next season next season.

I agree that it all comes down to how much the Doggies are willing to pay to get pick 13. If our 2018 second is involved to snag pick 9 then I would be very happy. As Rawlings said, it would have to be a very compelling offer for us to go along with it.

I like your choices. I really want us to take Liam Ryan, Ben Miller and Starcevich/Ainsworth/Hayden with our late ND picks or RD.

No.

We went 9-3 at subi this year. Don't see why we won't go similar. Then it's a case of picking up a few wins away from home. Given how bad lions, gc, north, Hawks and Carlton are going to be, imagine we can get the wins to get to 12 wins again. Could easily go higher.

Our floor isn't very low (when we have an average team) thanks to home ground advantage.

The lid is off my expectations. After seeing him live last year I'm convinced that all he needs is fitness to be a quality crumber who can deliver at the top level.

Saw he was on holiday with Simpson up in tiwi islands? Imagine simmo will keep him on track up there fitness wise so he's not too far off it when comes back

Only if he gets super fit, otherwise just an East Perth player.

And thats my major concern also, I am yet to be convinced that he has the sustained dedication required to maintain his fitness to a level thats required at an AFL standard.

History would suggest not.

The difference though greatwhiteshark, is we should now get to see what Venables, Cole, Nelson (not the flashest but I do think he can play an important role with his attack on the ball), Mutimer et al can do with an extended run in the team.

I'm skeptical just how much of those guys we'll see.
Priddis, Mitchell and Petrie out of our 2017 side, NN, Lycett and Ah Chee in. So who of the entrenched favourites get dropped so the youth get a game?

Oh, have they backflipped on Perth Stadium?
Subi was a big HGA for us for 2 factors- the travel for the opposition is one but also more importantly the dimensions. OUr game plan revolved around being able to close down the space on the narrow field of Subi (and Adelaide oval), which is why it was exposed on wide grounds like the G. The Perth Stadium is only a couple of meters narrower than the G so unless our game plan changes to suit (lets hope it does) then the HGA for us will be diminished.

This new ground, in the mid term, will really help us compete at the MCG but it may take awhile.

That said, we lost a lot of close games last year in the last quarter, so going into 2018 with some fresher bodies, a bit more speed and Nic Nat, you would think we can pick some of those up. 5-8 finish again next year for mine.

Venables is a given, as far as I am concerned, and I reckon they will play him. The players most likely on the outer, for mine, are LeCras and Hutchings. Cripps generally provides good pressure, if he stops doing that then he should also be on the outer. Your skepticism is noted and probably warranted.

Well if you go by the team that played in the last final.

Out/In

Priddis - Ah chee
Mitchell - Venables
Petrie - NN
Vardy - Lycett - Depends who is fitter of the two
Wellingham - Cole
McKenzie - Nelson ( think we will go smaller in the backline)
Lecra - Rioli ( Think Leca will be depth this year)

That is 5 young players in and one gun so it isn't as hard as you make it out to be.

Ground size should be offset by 60k eagles fans

I think a couple of the keys to success next year is if Nic nat comes back as good as he was when before injury and also the mindset of the playing group it's all very well getting new players in etc but if Simmo can't get the right mindset there's a problem , hopefully one of the new coaching staff specialises in motivation and with a few of the lazy players gone things will change

All of the following should no longer be walk up starts and the young guys should take preference.
Jetta, Lecras, Cripps, Shepherd.
Wont happen though and all 4 of those blokes will play round 1.

Watson could well sneak in there as well , fingers crossed without injury

There really should be no excuses for Nic not to be 100%, it will be 18 months since he has played.

Really? He is only 26 and has been ultra consistent , no star but he is really underated in what he does.

Cripps has been rubbish since his ankle injury and Jetta and Leccra meh
