So we now have 5 picks in the first 2 rounds (up to and including pick 37)

As a comparison the next best club has 3.

I hope this is a sign we are looking to da yoof for 2018.
When you consider we have 4 guys yet to debut in Venables, Rioli, Waterman and Watson who all look decent, we are very well set up to rejuvenate the list. We could have 10 debutants gunning for a spot next year.

Because we don't have any players with any trade value that are trying to claw their way out the door.

Dangerous precedent set at Freo. Look at the revolving door even quality clubs like Adelaide have become once Pandora's box gets opened.
yep want big money then demand a trade half way through the trade period.

And damn straight they should. I know we've been saying it constantly for the past two years but players like LeCras, Wellingham, Masten etc should have to earn their spots.

GC would be a huge chance to finish bottom 4.

If you think of it as a pick slide instead it really was a good deal. Depending on our finishing position it might end up unbelievable.
Well that is the risk WC were banking on.

If they finish around the bottom and we finish around 7-9, thats around pick 10-12 in points that WC gain.

If they improve and we slip, still a solid win on points, but heavily dependent on drafted players. We may win on points, but in reality that low pick has way more value simply due to access to top talent.

An inversion of positions or WC sliding down the ladder to bottom 2 swings the points in GC favour, but is really a disaster given the quality available that early in the draft.

Early picks are already worth more points for this reason alone.
I can understand giving 2018 picks a 20% boost in points due to a "strong draft" but giving early picks MORE value on top of their already inflated value seems redundant.

With Venables, Rioli, Waterman and Watson joining Archie we already look better. Other will progress and we are likely to have one or two mature age draftees as well. We have had no walk outs and only lost aging retirees.

Meanwhile, Freo land pick 2 and Matera.

Why are we so shit at this?

Maybe we should offer Masten for GC's first pick next year? :drunk:
Er, we didn't have any decent players that were desperate to go to a basket case. Weller is significantly better than Masten. And younger.

Remember when i said a couple years ago that Jarrod Pickett would go to GWS with their first pick (inside top 5) noone believed me.
Well my mail on Tim Kelly is that its a 2 horse race between the Blues as he met with SOS and West Coast.
The dogs may of helped us by getting that pick 16 off them..The Blues have been known to jump early. Well when SOS is around.
And my money is now on the Crows picking Sambono for Pick 12 to replace Cameron. Like for Like. I watched him last year kick 10 in the territory.
We can all sit back and judge where someone fits in the draft but that doesnt count for needs of teams. Our needs are Speed and Fwds as well as mids. But Venables is already with us. AhChee will be an inside bull. He will handball it 40metres to Jetta on the run.
I kinda liked the idea of changing out Lecras, Hill and Cripps for Rioli, Ryan and Sambono.
The later 2 can play up the ground as well.
Kelly and Schloithe be good as well. They wont be any worse than Hutchings.

Let's be as pessimistic as possible. We finish 14th next year and Gold Coast finish 12th (ABSOLUTE WORST CASE)

We get pick 29 for FREE in the ABSOLUTE WORST case scenario.
God forbid we play finals and Gold Coast finishes bottom 4 again, in that case, it's an unbelievable trade in our favour.

Edit: If we finish anything above 17th or 18th, we stand to make a tidy profit.
If we play finals, Gold Coast should pack up shop.

Wellingham and Masten haven't got a spot at the moment.

Exactly. But at the start of this year they did and they eventually got shuffled out. I hope the trend continues - sure you don't play the youth for the sake of it but when you have underperforming senior players there must be changes.

Lets go really

Early picks are already worth more points for this reason alone.

Not really.

I mean the points difference made up by 37 hardly reflect reality. Even ignoring our drafting history, roughly 30% of 2nd round picks make 100 games. The truth is, top 5 and top 10 picks have a dramatically higher success rate when it comes to delivering higher output.

The points may split the equivalent of a mid second rounder in our favour if we finish bottom 5-10, but simply having that early pick probably has far more intrinsic value than points indicate given the access to talent, and probability of a draftee succeeding not being reflected by the points value of a pick.

Don't get me wrong, I rate the trade, but it does come with risk. Barrett and Wallet have no idea. But I do like the 20 and 25, for 15 and 52 a fair bit better.

The gap for a win is not as high, but it risks far less. Also 20 is not that far from 15.

If GC think that we will slide they just have to look at this season to see why we won't . We were 3 very close winnable games away from finish top
Only loosing priddis who was cooked , mitchell and wellingham from the team that played in the elimination final . Add natanui back , sheed, redden , ahchee to pick up the slack in the middle and not make us a liability on the spread we will be fine .
plus 12 home games we will finish about the same as last season
