Remember when i said a couple years ago that Jarrod Pickett would go to GWS with their first pick (inside top 5) noone believed me.
Well my mail on Tim Kelly is that its a 2 horse race between the Blues as he met with SOS and West Coast.
The dogs may of helped us by getting that pick 16 off them..The Blues have been known to jump early. Well when SOS is around.
And my money is now on the Crows picking Sambono for Pick 12 to replace Cameron. Like for Like. I watched him last year kick 10 in the territory.
We can all sit back and judge where someone fits in the draft but that doesnt count for needs of teams. Our needs are Speed and Fwds as well as mids. But Venables is already with us. AhChee will be an inside bull. He will handball it 40metres to Jetta on the run.
I kinda liked the idea of changing out Lecras, Hill and Cripps for Rioli, Ryan and Sambono.
The later 2 can play up the ground as well.
Kelly and Schloithe be good as well. They wont be any worse than Hutchings.
I think Carlton are a shot at pick 30.

Also don't underestimate the space in our salary cap that would have been created by dumping older players with a whole raft of rookie scale players. That's good with McGovern and gaff coming up free agents and Yeo looking at a new contract

The points may split the equivalent of a mid second rounder in our favour if we finish bottom 5-10, but simply having that early pick probably has far more intrinsic value than points indicate given the access to talent, and probability of a draftee succeeding not being reflected by the points value of a pick.

Don't get me wrong, I rate the trade, but it does come with risk. Barrett and Wallet have no idea. But I do like the 20 and 25, for 15 and 52 a fair bit better.

The gap for a win is not as high, but it risks far less. Also 20 is not that far from 15.

I agree with you that earlier picks are more valuable, but that value is already reflected in the points they are valued at. These value systems have a fair bit of robust logic behind them.

Are you saying that you have a better system of valuing draft picks than AFLGuru/HPNFooty?

What a great sign from the footy club... Finally taking 'risks' and making active moves. It feels like a little bit of a turning point and that we have got a little bit of our mojo back.
Our drafting has been so passive lately, just using our allocated picks, with a swap for a player or two.

This feels like a great platform. The 5-6 being drafted will have one Sam Mitchell to mentor(?) them (in some capacity anyway) :D
It should establish a pretty solid core group for the future. I feel like he will invest in them heavily, being his first year/lot of draftees.

As I see it, next year we will be an anything but bottom 5 year, with JK, Darling, NN, Gov, Barrass, Shuey, Gaff, Yeo are still a pretty damn good core, so a finish from 1-13 as anything could happen.
The Suns on the other-hand, have to learn another new game plan, lose GA jnr and have no home games for half the year. It's not an ideal scenario for them! So it should be a high 2nd rounder that wont have slid too much from what our 1st pick would have been, with our nominal second still in play.

Smart, exciting moves. Cant wait for the draft.

Ok draft day here we come.

13 - H Clark / C Constable or N Coffield
21 - O Allen
26 - J Warpel
32 - J Petruccelle / G Miers
37 - G Miers / T Kelly
67 - T Kelly / L Ryan
Not far off it - L Fogarty at 21 or 26 would be excellent as he is an inside mid that can also play outside and in the forward line. O wpuld take him ahead of Worpel.

Twomey's write ups are variable but I think he nailed Fogarty in this one:
There is plenty to like about Fogarty, a prospect who just gets it done most weeks with a minimum of fuss. As an inside ball winner, Fogarty can collect big numbers of touches and is neat and tidy with his ball use. The thing that makes him equally effective as a midfielder is his ability to attack and hit the scoreboard, and he was a regular goalkicker at all levels he played this year. Fogarty is the type of player who could be picked a little later because he is on the smaller side, but he has the tools to be a valuable AFL player.

Surely we are not considering using all 4 of the draft picks on mid?

That would mean we would have

Mid rotation:

REDDEN (MID)
SHEED (MID)
Duggan (HBF/MID)
YEO (MID)
VENABLES (MID)
SHUEY (MID)
Rookie (1)
Rookie (2)
Rookie (3)

+ 4 x MID/ 3x Mid + 1 fwd

Parto (mid)?????? Might be gone. Might be overtaken.

Fogarty is the guy who makes sense, like Caleb Daniels, but we never draft because we hate short players.

You are counting on a lot to go right. We scrapped into the 8 and won one game in the finals where we should have been beaten. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

We had no depth in the middle before losing Priddis and Mitchell. Our inside 50 count was ordinary. JJK papered over a lot of the cracks for us.

You are assuming we get what we want in the draft and our injuries are low and Nic returns to form.

It can still happen. We had no mid depth but we played with two players who offered nothing defensively. Individuals numbers mightn't have been as high but as a collective we could have done better.

Lecras offers nothing as a forward anymore. Replace him with a pressure goal sneak. Not a slow undersized lead up player and that's a huge improvement to our forward line.

Replace Mackenzie with a smaller third tall, we'll be set and more dynamic with run and team defence awareness.

Three things that even if we did them in 16 I would say we would have done better.

Also no playing McGovern forward if jk gets injured.

Weller will be better than pick 2 will be next year. So doesn't help us with their pick.

Long term might be a different story.

Weller doesn’t compensate for their other loses.

I reckon there will be a slider that we can grab. Balta, Bonar, Shipley, whatever. But we have enough good picks, close enough together, to ensure the talent doesn't all slip through the net.

But I'm not sure I'd take both Constable and Worpel. Those two would both be wanting time in the middle, but they're behind Redden, Ah Chee and Sheed, as well as Shuey when he rotates inside. So we might have to waste them in the WAFL or play them out of position - and we've had enough of that lately.

Sambono for 12?

That is the biggest calls I have ever read on here.

Pick 40>+

Carlton managed to keep pick 30.
Surely that's been earmarked for Kelly.
Do we strike with pick 26?
Yes. Improves our midfield immediately and has all the attributes we require.

Those saying no are just getting hung up on the mature age aspect.
