I just don't let my love for the club colour my view of the odds of success of a given move it makes. I think it is going to be very hard to find quality players with those picks.
I don't either, I've been extremely critical of quite a few of the club's decisions from the last few years. This trade period marks a very clear change in direction, feels like the club's just woken up.
What would you have done instead if you had been in charge?

In anyone's language.

Just lost your midfield core, undoubtedly will slide down the table in 2018 on the back of a new midfield mix taking time to find it's feet, youngsters getting up to speed in the middle, slide down the ladder, that first round pick becomes more valuable.

Just gave it away - for some chump picks in a weaker draft, it's one of the worst decisions I've seen.
Cellar dwellars get good picks.
Freo have a crap season then rape the basket case Gold Coast because 1 person wants to go there . GWS must think Freo arent a threat to pretty much just give a good servant his wish of going home. Well thats what happens down there at the bottom. No decent players at Freo so there is plenty of salary .

Spend a load of money getting better people in our drafting and development department than the ones we have had in charge for last 5 years for a start. Hard to have confidence trading for more picks when you look at the track record of the people who are going to be deciding who to use them on.

Freo will go for a mid and a tall with 2 and 5. The mid might play a bit next year but talls take time. So no quick fix there.

Their best up and coming mid in Weller just bailed out so that will hurt them.

They had to retain Johnson and Sandilands to shore up for talls and those guys are over the hill, have come down the other side and looking at which retirement village they can afford.

They held onto Mundy and Ballentyne as well thats how well their list rebuild is progressing and lost Balic for a half eaten packet of chips.

No wonder that bloke is on our site it must be morbid on the Freo board.

Great fun at parties too I imagine

It's just an opinion or an alternative way of looking at things than the way you are looking at them. No need to insult people for having a different opinion.

And wouldn't this board be boring to read for any of us if the only people posting on here all had the exact same opinon as we have?

That's a cop out answer, what would you have done differently?

You only have to look through the Dockers trading & drafting history to see many, many stinkers.

Yep.
GAJ, Lachie Neale, Dylan Shiel, Rory Sloane, Tom Mitchell aren't Giants either but all are damn good clearance players.

Time and tine again, too much emphasis is put on size when talking about clearances.
A good footballer first...Every time.

Pretty sure Shiel is a Giant. You’re right about the rest, though.

Not sure it was really that insulting.
You seem to have a different opinion to yourself though. On the one hand you say you want us to build through the draft but then on the other hand you're unhappy that we've got a heap of draft picks to build through the draft.

About the only thing more mundane and overused than "super draft" is "sticking to structures."

Seriously heard it 4 times since 2008, which was also supposed to be a superdraft

In my time there has been one freak draft (2001)- the rest range from reasonable to shithouse - none of which are typically picked in advance.

In 2008 the draft was so hyped, no bastard traded for fear of losing their 1st round pick. Out of that top 10 you have 2 (maybe 3) players worth more than a pinch of salt. In that draft picks 21-30 delivered similar talent to 1-10

Anyone know if the U18 All Stars game is available online somewhere? Was on Fox Footy last year but didn’t seem to be this year. Wouldn’t mind seeing how Starcevich went. Oscar Allen too apparently kicked a couple in that game.

After spending the last few years bringing in Hill, Cripps, Wellers, Giles, Ellis, Mitchell, Petrie, Bennell, Dick, Sugar the list goes on and on it's great to see that the club identifies that Vardy, Redden and Yeo are still young enough and look the be in our better players most weeks.

But to go hard this draft not only proves they mean business where our list is concerned but that our best 22 should be more of a revolving door for young hungry less corralley talent.

Brand new wider ground. New hunger from the recruits. A faster less corralley game plan.
The best midfielder of the last 10 years as midfield coach. Nic's back.

I'm excited Jerry

More a recognition that the world is changing & one must move with the times.
Do you expect us to Target kids still, or do you expect a few mature agents to surface in these 2nd round picks.

Personally think only Kelly is worth a 2nd round.

They are backing themselves/the club/the players to succeed. Has always been the way the club operates.

It's almost a complete about face, hopefully it means that whoever has been influencing our list management decisions in the recent past has been pushed well and truly into the background.

I have a feeling Simmo has now taken charge and told his recruiters exactly what he wants. Plus Rawlings is no idiot. Just a hunch.

Can we ask what has brought on this new approach?

Rawlings as the new list manager?

The club admitting that the 'top up era' didn't work or time has run out for top ups?

And what is likely to change on our approach to drafting?

I feel we need to draft players who ;

1) aren't slow or too small and;
2) who have more focus on contested ability.

Saying that a player with some physicality and a football brain are also good attributes.

I know there has been talk about Tom Kelly and Liam Ryan. I'm happy to invest a 32 or 37 on Kelly as he has ability to make an immediate impact and play several positions. I am sceptical on using anything more than 37 on Ryan as he lacks that flexibility and also lacks defensive traits.

Couple of intertwining factors
1) understanding that some players just dont have it
2) recognising just where the game is heading concerning player retention & the fact that planning is great but dont forget about the here & now.
3) understanding that nowdays almost anyone can win a flag each year - so the earlier you get the kids in the better

I would like keep Wellingham and play him on a wing as he was recruited to play, one year deal only of course and lay it on the line to him that next season is everything.
I feel like this could possibly give him the rocket he needed. Come back next year knowing he was this close to being delisted. Either that or hes happy to quit all together and continue with his other business interests. I'd give him one more year because his best can be very good.
