It seems to be the world we live in now though.
My only thoughts are that maybe you can put in a clause about being capable of playing X games a year.
Nope - wont be happening. It will be a pure X for Y years and no clauses

Just give Kelly a blank cheque ffs
He is not that good that i would pay him anything he wants.

We can't go overpaying Kelly; it creates a burden on the TPP not unlike overpaying Fyfe (although, with less risk due to no injury history). If North want to give him a ridiculous offer, then let them. All we can do is offer what we believe to be fair for him and our club, and then look at all other opportunities while waiting for his decision.

It'd be like scrapping over the last Snickers in a supermarket, with the other bloke offering $10 to the shopkeeper. Just because you want it, doesn't mean it's worth paying $12 - just buy a Mars for $2, a handful of peanuts for $4, and use the rest to grab anything else you could want.
Good analogy

Hawthorns pick could be around 6. That wont get it done even with a pick in the 30's in the next season. He was pick 2 and certainly hasn't gone backwards. If he keeps this form up he will cost 2 first rounders. Luckily we have 2 first rounders.
I know a few in Norths Hierarchy and i can tell you now that 2-3 of them have had there asses twitch about this first rounder business. They realise that they could potentially be giving up 2 top 5 picks.

Why wouldn't we get near it if he was the only real star available. We have the money so that is no issue. Even the length shouldn't be an issue.
The offer as i understood it was matching Norths terms @ 5 years and renegotiate it from there and paying more if deserved. 9 hamstrings us as a club in the event something goes wrong with him. Smart list making mate. CLub first.

.
He's already GWS's best midfielder & that's saying something considering how stacked they are.

His odds to win the Brownlow continue to shorten. I called it in round 3 that he's a decent chance to win it considering the form he was showing & the wins the Giants were likely to get. If anything, his form is continuing to spike.

Right now, I would have Josh comfortably in the top 10 mids in the league. In 18 months I suspect he'll be considered one of the best. Possibly the best, he's that talented.

If we were ever going to go after a big fish, Kelly is the guy. He's silk but has a hard edge & runs all day. He's like a clone made of Nicky Winmar & Robert Harvey.

Pay the kid whatever it takes to get him. He'll pay us back in spades. Bookmark it.

It's beyond a joke. 99% of players wouldn't have made such a big deal. Murphy the minority. I wonder if the Blues won he still would've refused to shake players hands?
His team mates are probably pissing themselves over it, and his wife's indiscretions.

I firmly believe Fyfe has already made his mind up whether he's staying or going. I don't think Freo wins are actually that important in the scheme of things.
As I've said many times if what I'm hearing about Fyfe is true then a long term/big dollar contract combined with off field business opportunities may be just as important as playing for a club in a Premiership window. Also setting himself up for footy media career post playing days is important too.
That may be all rubbish but If it's true then a move east would be the smartest decision for him.
He has contract details in front of him from Freo and others and has had for a little while. If he's going to leave then he already knows in his heart of hearts.
Will be interesting to see which way he goes.
If you're right, and I respect your insights, then it's likely Fyfe is leaving Freo. If he knew he was staying at Freo then he would've signed with them and it would've been announced with great fanfare. No reason to delay announcing it

So, under such a scenario, would Freo match our offer? If our 1st RDP is better than Freo's then it's more likely they do. So, in a perverse way, if we are to attract Fyfe as a FA then we need Hawthorn's 1st RDP to be inferior to Freo's.

All highly speculative. But the Hawks returning to form may be in our best interests.

Good to see MG's come out & say his future is at St Kilda . Hopefully the media can put that rubbish trade talk to rest.
"Saints fans will be relieved to hear that Paddy sees his future at the club"
Ha...what a media beat up! ( Looking at you KB and Purple)
Probably sitting there thinking what fake news they can make up next!

Copping a hammering on twitter. Lol
I know you're a big deal now Rors, with thousands of new followers, but just remember we've been telling you to "get F**ked" for years and all those carton Twitter flogs have only been doing it for hours.

;)

Freo are only competitive right now because of Mundy. Hes having a ripping season similar to the resurgence by burgoyne late in his career but I can't see Mundy keeping that up for too many more seasons. He goes and fyfes copping all the attention again.

The thing is if something goes wrong in year one then 5 years also hamstrings you. We could front end to the point he earns stuff all in years 6 to 9 and then the only hamstring is a list spot. No different to freeman now or even pierce or anyone else who doesn't play. If you don't take a risk we may end up with nothing. The perfect trade may not have got is carlisle and Gresham as many thought we overpaid but we took a punt

Who was the idiot who talked about Paddy leaving in the press ? Someone mentioned he might go to Geelong . Makes me angry when they seem to just make up stuff to fill a newspaper. It doesn't matter to them if it's made up as long as it sells a few more papers . Obviously Paddy isn't the first player to get these sorts of rumours flying about him . We latch onto any rumours about Kelly coming here so it works I guess but it's bullshit if they just make it up . You never know if it's true or made up any more .

No knock on Paddy, but he's still very much in the "if" category. He's never kicked more than 2 at AFL level, and often goes goal-less.
To put it in bullshit sliding doors terminology.
IF - I was the supporter of a team who offered megabucks and gave up serious trade ( which Geelong don't have lol ) to poach Paddy, THEN : I'd be really really nervous in a Tom Boyd sort of way.

Not quite.

In the scenario presented (assuming 5 x 1M vs 9 x 1M) , then a 5 year deal would cost 1M per year, whilst a front loaded 9 year deal may cost 1.6M per year over that same period. This means that there is 600K less in the cap to front load other contracts, therefore we lose the opportunity to pay other players in advance and free up salary later. Or even miss out on recruiting another quality player, instead.

A 9M burden over 9 years is still the same burden no matter how you structure payment timing.
A 5M burden over 5 years is objectively smaller.
The only time that front/backending contracts has an effect is to do with payment timing, thus allowing you to have a "12 million dollar list" for only 10 million, at the expense of later on having an "8 million dollar list" for 10 million at a later time.
