acadamies are the stupidest thing out. like i said before this was implemented. WCE and Freo would start to really clean up from it
IMO acadamies should be run by AFL around the country not the clubs. Players coming through them should be better skilled as a benefit of the program but then have to go through the normal draft.

Same benefit for everyone that way.

may as well bring back the old zones.

spot on, its a joke. WCE and Freo have been running these academies for less than a year and are basically robbing the talent that would normally be picked up by the WAFL clubs and then go into the open draft. its basically turned into a system to siphon off top end talent at a discount for basically doing SFA

i know of a case over here where a kid moved from rural WA to gold coast before the age cut off, so he could enter the GC academy

That last spot on the interchange is going to be fought over. Wright is good but I think anyone of the following will demand that spot: Gilbert, Webster, McKenzie, Dunstan, Long, Sinclair, Michington, Lonie, Steele, and possibly Freeman. Wow that's great depth.

Agree it is much better depth than previous years.

Thing is, it is at the start of the year but as injuries happen throughout the season it will thin a little. Add a good player management strategy of rotating players out to keep them fresh at the back end of the season and the available group thins a little further.

A fringe player not getting a game straight up should simply look at the bigger picture and keep applying themselves and their chances will come.

what i think will be interesting is how we transition riewoldt, dempster, montagna and gilbert. especially if we retire two of them at the end of this year, that means we will need two to step up in 2018 pretty much straight away

By 2 to step up you are referring to fyfe and shiel right? :D

Damn! I got Sandra'd in the time it took me to type the post!

Fyfe and Shiel should do the trick! :D

that would be amazing!!! i think we need more tall defensive depth, potentially a 3rd tall defender given the OOC talked about players on here have been mids, to help cover the loss of fisher, dempster and then gilbert

is there anyone we could target?

Weve already got replacements.

we are pretty light on

Brown, Carlisle and Roberton are best 22 quality. Say we dont have dempster and gilbert and we get an injury to one of Brown, Carlisle and Roberton who do we go with?

Beyond that we have Hugh as the KPD coming back from injury thats still very much in the development phase. We do have coughlan but he's a rookie and pretty speculative. Even more speculative is JBT and Joyce albeit a tad undersized as a KPD.

For the 3rd talls we have White although he's still very much in the development phase and some see him more as winger HBFer than a lock down defender.

i think we need to look at some KPD depth particularly 3rd tall defender depth in the upcoming trade period

If we get Fyfe & Shiel, we won't need any defenders.... The ball won't get down there ;)

While it would be amazing it would never happen. It's nice to think about though.

As for a 3rd tall: maybe Tomlinson but after losing Marchbank GWS probably wont want to let him go (unless he isn't worth keeping). I'm not sold on him but I can't think of any other 3rd talls that might be on the market off the top of my head.

Pittard as an FA

Would sign Steven May in a heartbeat, let him have his time in the sun as co captain of the Suns for 2017, before signing him up.

Tough as bloody nails and a friend of a friends girlfriends uncle said that he has never followed StKilda & is not remotely related to Ben Long. So the time is right for a change. ;)

That's the way we are managing our list.
Hell we could have kept Lee and Delaney if we wanted depth. BUT we are backing our young players. That's the way to do it.
If we haven't seen promising signs from both of them I guess we look at someone else, but there is a reason we didn't keep Lee and Delaney.
Also we have a fairly versatile team.
Bruce HAS played back, and can do so, if we can put Battle or even Acres in the forward line ( and we still have Riewoldt for now ).
Marshall is also a key back.

As it stands its likely we'll be de-listing some guys we feel are too good to delist.
