I'll say it again - there are 2 teams left in the running for Kelly.

1 is GWS
2 is Us

Spoke with a high level Carlton member ( and ex Saint coach ) last night and he said they would love Kelly but aren't in the race.
Mentioned the relationship with Kelly and Steele as well. Which reinforces what the GWS exec said to me the other week.

Paul Connors was just on SEN.
- Asked about Ess article by Robbo about getting Kelly. PC replied that he hadnt seen it but had heard about it. Said something along the lines of, written by Robbo a Bombers supporter right? (Basically laughed and said Ess isnt in picture IMO)
- Spoke about Hodge for a bit (tribute)
- on Kelly again. Said JK should be commended for his excellent footy, etc. Spoke to him a week or two ago about not being in a hurry to decide and is focused on finals campaign. Spoke about his family(Dad is a 2x Sandover winner) as support network, etc. Then said if he stays its with a talented group, blah, blah, blah. Then spoke of if he comes back to Melbourne, it will be for family.

PC obviously trying not to give anything away, but after listening to that I would think JK is heading home to Melbourne, with Family an important part. If anything, i feel slightly bouyed by what I heard.
What I honestly took out of the PC interview was;

A. If Josh Kelly stays it's because of his loyalty to his friends and teammates at GWS in their pursuit for a flag. He added this is a very common deciding factor for players nowadays

B. If he comes home it's for family

At the very end of the discussion PC said.. 'I've told Josh, no matter what your decision is, you still have plenty of time and don't rush it'.

As far as I'm concerned, purely going off that interview, Kelly simply hasn't made up his mind 100%. PC has told Kelly to concentrate on footy and probably told all parties that's where he is at. GWS can just up and down all they like, as can the Melbourne clubs, but that is probably just the reality he hasn't made a definitive decision yet.

I'd say out of all of this, including what the ITK's have mentioned here and media, these are the statements currently most accurate;

- Kelly hasn't signed anything, only verbal

- Kelly himself hasn't spoken to any clubs officially

- Kelly may have told his manager he wants to nominate Saints if he comes home (and that's what ITK's MG and TEW have been told)

- PC has been told to look for houses in Bayside

- PC playing the Melbourne clubs against each other for the best price

- Kelly has the option at any stage during their finals campaign or immediately after to backflip on any verbals and stay with his teammates.

And that last one is the biggie. Regardless of what's happened behind closed doors, what anyone has or hasn't agreed to, Josh can at any stage during the emotion of finals decide he can't walk away from the rare opportunity to win a flag with his current teammates.

I believe if Kelly comes home it will be to us, but I'm not calling it till I know he has signed on that dotted line.

"Well tbh I'm sick of calls from North and SOS at Carlton and now to top it off dildo has started trying to call"
"So they still haven't worked it out then?"
"Nah, reckon they will when we're playing in the same side next year"

Eurghh, tsk, uhhh, footy's....ughhh....footy's MORE than that, Dr.Spaceman. You know, people say "well why cant they just facetime each other" and I get that, Dr. Spaceman. I really do. But SURELY footy is about the LOVE for one another, the HARD WORK, the SACRIFICE, you know? Doing it for your mates, getting in and doing the hard stuff Dr.Spaceman. People out there watching the show tonight may agree, a lot of people may not, but Dr.Spaceman, these men, these WARRIORS....not warriors, uerghh, these PLAYERS, need to show some HUNGER for the contest!

Anyway...should we bring in the coaches?

If Kelly leaves it to GwS to find best deal we're not in pole position. GWS are in the premiership window and need mature talent not more first round talent to incubate and lose 4 years down the track... they will most likely engage us in a three way trade if Kelly comes to us...
Get used to it
They'll be in that window for the next 15 years. Rich's create more rich's.

I want to believe.jpg

I really rate Carlton's rebuild so far, and am concerned that they will start becoming competent again.

But it really doesn't make sense for Kelly to leave GWS now to go to teams like Carlton/North who have at least another 2-3 years outside the 8. Kelly has spent the first 3 years of his career at a cellar dweller, why leave now when they're at the very beginning of a huge upswing to go down the ladder again?

Barracked for North as a kid means jack shit when you're an adult. Especially if that team is North Melbourne, and you're currently at GWS. If he really wants to play at North sometime in his career, he'd be better off re-siging with GWS now to chase the flag and join the dynasty, and then going there in 2 years time. Makes no sense to make the switch there now, none. Zero. If Kelly is in the market 2 years time, North will 100% be chasing again with $$$.

Carlton are attractive with the contents of their brown paper bags and big ticket games. But again, as soon as they start getting anywhere results wise, they'll be first have to navigate another transition phase with Murphy, Simpson, Gibbs etc on the way to retirement. Like with North, if he is attracted by the Navy Blue and wants to play sometime in his career, he'd be better off re-siging with GWS now to chase the flag and join the dynasty, and then going there in 2 years time. Makes no sense to make the switch there now, none. Zero.

I'm in danger of getting my hopes up and jinxing the daylights out of us, but I really believe Kelly is torn because of our offer. Dollars wise, its very competitive and better than GWS. Location wise, it's perfect. Better than GWS. And compensating his old club, won't be a problem. But crucially, unlike North and Carlton, we'll be ready to compete immediately.

I'm worried that by having a largely flat 2017, we didn't really put our best foot forward in convincing him to switch away from GWS now. The ace up our sleeve against North/Carl was the fact that we are closer to competing for a flag and we really failed to take advantage of that. If we have to throw him more $$ to overcome this, then just do it. ~Whatever it takes~ :rainbow:

If that happens we've still got Josh Battle and Rowan Marshall. We'll be fine we've got enough quality and depth in pretty much every position other than the midfield so it's probably about time we started focusing on that.
I'm honestly not sure about that.

I rate Battle higher than most and Marshall for being a decent prospect but reality is Paddy was at worst a top 2 pick in a decent draft and Battle is at best a low first rounder to a mid second round pick and Marshall for how much he's shown is still a work in progress

If Paddy doesn't make it we're not looking too flash.

I have no doubt if Paddy wasn't around Roo would have gone around next year as well, a lot of planning rests around Paddy being if not a dominant forward but at least being a competent one.

There was a never a doubt on his ability or his endeavour like there slightly was with Billings but with Paddy I hope he can get some continuity cause he's going to be a beauty.
