This is O.T.T. and impossible to create without going backwards at the same time.

Check out what I just posted.

The 20% loading on the F/S's means we can have 4 picks inside the top 50 and still get them.

We need to be bold and aggressive - we did that in getting rid of 5 big name players at the end of 2016 - we did that chasing JK/DM during 2017 - now we need the same thinking re the draft for the next 2 years.

5 picks inside 30 is the goal over consecutive years - its very hard to achieve when you have a settled player list and players are not asking to leave. (However as you say the F/S's make this easier for us next year.)

To 'dominate the draft' over the next 2 years may mean we need to trade a few senior players - the FD will know where this stands but the players mentioned - Goldy, Swallow, LT, Thommo - are a start to get some pick upgrades but we would need to cut (a little) further. If a Mountford wants to go home or say 2 of McMillan/Atley/Daw/Wood/Wright (i.e. players in their mid 20's) want a new home then we need to be open to offers.

I'm not sure what the appetite is for these cuts after last years cull - what i do know though is that 4 and 21 this year and 4 and 21 next year wont cut it.

If we want to be serious about playing in a grand final in 4 years we need access to more elite youth than that - the next 2 years is the opportunity for us.

Tanking and getting rid of our second rate players won't get us 10 picks inside the top 30 over 2 years.
What's so magic about 30, anyway? Not keen to ever see us slash our list to fit some random ideal - especially without considering our recruiters actually know what each draft will look like years out, and where we are likely to get quality.

Besides, I'm pretty sure I remember reading the most valuable pick was 37.

I dunno. It just seems like a random number inside the second round.

I don't buy into this rip everything apart and build it up again cos I stubbed my toe/we had a bad year mentality. Improving a list is a great idea and every club no doubt tries to every year but the way I see it it should be constant steady improvement from inside and outside the club. If you are constantly improving then you are constantly increasing your chances of winning enough games to make finals and enough finals to have a shot at a flag. That has to come from your players not just new recruits. Frankly if they aren't working on improvement then that is a good reason to let them go but otherwise, unless the club thinks it doesn't need them cos those positions are covered by better players, why just trade good players for future picks? Is just part of the Aussie obsession with gambling?

Our fall down the ladder didn't just happen cos suddenly our old players were too old. We did suffer with injuries, and because our list was limited and those injuries were in crucial areas - what some might call "single points of failure" then it really showed us up. But there was enough of that list to build from in the first place and plenty of it is still there. We need to fix the midfield, that might involve a couple of years of pain and maybe even a few tough calls, but that's it. The rest of our side is the core of a good side.

If we do it smart with the cattle we have and a few good picks we should be starting to show some real promise in the second half of next year. Maybe even earlier. Its an art as well as a science and trying to force the process into random draft numbers - its silly. We need to adjust our world views to match what happens in reality not the other way round.

Not too sure about this theory of 5 picks in the top 30, but gave it a shot anyway. Best I could do without giving too much away is 4 in the top 30:

Start with picks 4, 21, 44, 62 & 76.

Trade 1 - Swallow, 21 & 44 to Gold Coast for picks 19 & 37. Swallow equivalent to pick 56.
Trade 2 - Goldstein to Bulldogs for pick 26. Sign up Spencer as a delisted FA.
Trade 3 - Mullett to Essendon for pick 46.
Trade 4 - Thomas, 26, 46 & 62 to Adelaide for picks 17, 53 & 72. Thomas equiv to pick 65.
Trade 5 - Picks 72 & 76 to Freo for Balic.
Trade 6 - Picks 37 & 53 to GWS for pick 30. GWS would've had to acquire pick 30 via other trades. This trade is in GWS' favour by 87 points.

Outs: Hansen, Waite, Swallow, Goldstein, Mullett & Thomas.
Ins: Spencer, Balic & picks 4, 17, 19 & 30.

Sometimes I look at speculated trades and wonder to myself:

Do these people really follow the same club I do?

Highly doubtful that the club us gonna make the sort of cuts being spoken about.
I agree, but unfortunately the way the game is being administered, in 10-15 years, trades like these will be commonplace and you could theoretically trade out half your team a la the NBA and NFL.

If we have an honest conversation with Swallow and he decides he would like to go to the GC to play a couple more years with his brother I think a direct swap for McKenzie would be about right or if we had to throw in our 3rd rounder for Hall I would do it in a heartbeat. I think the guy could be a star playing for a Melbourne club

GC have a plethora of second rounders (that will probably grow as they trade Thompson, Saad, Matera etc). Would prefer picks.

While I agree with the sentiment of being bold and aggressive I can't say I agree with the example.

Drew - Wouldn't be the difference.
Harvey - As above.
NDS - Finished.
Firrito - As above.

Crap, I'm struggling to think of the 5th... The only call that was mildly aggressive was Harvey. The others were no brainers, it was time, there were replacements that were either better (Drew / Brown) or needed to be played now for the future (Durdin / Nielson / Mountford).
