I've never claimed to be a youth footy expert, but after watching a couple of minutes of highlights from Izak Rankine (that now makes me an expert, right?), he's exactly what we need in next years draft. Dare I say it, a right footed Josh Kelly.

I know this has been floated before, but is it worth looking at trading out pick 4 this year for a first rounder next year given how strong the draft will be? It would put us in an excellent position for a super draft with two first round picks that we could either use to get two of the best yougn players available, or package to move higher in the draft and give us a shot at one of the truly elite kids.

I would love to know how our recruiters rate the top 4 or 5 prospects of this draft against the first rounders of next year. Pykie as the most knowledgable youth person on this board, how would you rate Rayner/Dow/Cerra/Stephenson/LDU if they were in next years draft? Would they be top 10 talents? If not, would it be worth trying to trade out our first of this year for one next year?

Just get me someone we can put in the middle to prolong JZ's playing career.

Other than that, I don't really care.
I'm happy with any one of Dow, LDU, Rayner or Stephenson.

I'm secretly hoping for Bonar at 21 who reminds me a fair bit of SPP, obviously had 2 knee's and risks associated, but he's more naturally talented than SPP, if he had a pre-season and the whole year, he'd be in the top 10.

Stephenson & Bonar would be a great combo in terms of versatility to the side.

Plus the name Bonar is a massive positive too.

Don't rate Cerra in the same bracket as those 4?

It's such an even year, you really have to look for potential elite attributes.

There's pro's and con's to each of Dow, LDU, Stephenson and Rayner; if any one of them was a bit more complete, they'd be the #1 pick easily. Dow, imo is the most complete of all 4, but that doesn't necessarily make him the lock to be the best. I think his initial pace around the contest and his ability to win the contested ball makes him a gun though. He's a more inside Luke Shuey.

I think Stephenson and Rayner are by far the most naturally talented. LDU has the least amount of physical talent of those 3, but he's probably got the best intangibles of all 4, he's a big game player as shown this year, the Kennedy comparisons aren't without merit.

Cerra will be a decent player, but I see more Corey Ellis than Scott Pendlebury in him.

Stephenson has a pretty high ceiling though, I see his basement as Sam Gibson but his ceiling is a more explosive Isaac Smith that kicks 25-30 goals a year, the big question is weather his accumulation in the last few months translates to AFL, or if he's just another Will Hoskin-Elliott.

Hey, mate. What do you think about my question earlier?

Where do you think Rayner/LDU/Dow/Cerra/Stephenson would be ranked if they were in next years draft?

At this stage 6+.

It's hard to say, I like to see what players do in their top age year though.

If you were talking about D.Fogarty this time last year vs the 2018 draft, I'd say he'd be in the top 5.

Things change, but the shear number of kids at D.Fogarty's level make it compelling.

I believe our strategy has always been to get use our first round pick in each draft. I dont think our pick 4 will go anywhere TBH. That strategy would of differed if Josh decided to come this year.

It's hilarious that over on the Saints board they think we ran our recruitment strategy through the media. Just making up stuff to deflect from their own disappointment.

NMFC barely commented throughout the year at all, Hell, we never even confirmed we'd made an offer to either Martin or Kelly. We just let the media believe what they wanted to.

Unlike their footy department who made specific statements on "if" they got Kelly etc.

I'd wager that sly sneaky underhanded prick Dave Matthews was leaking the JK related stuff.

Mate, I honestly think most of their posters are 10 years old. Barely any of them have any intellect and its laughable.

Just point them to my Josh Kelly youtube video (the St Lolda one) as they were never in the picture but they had the entire S.E.N station broadcasting about him all year.

Just heard the JK conference. Someone asked "what took you so long"..... contradicted himself with the answer. We all know Josh you were really considering leaving but you werent going to say that :)

You've got to factor in development cost as well.

1 year of development is worth a fair bit to a side.

Getting a lump of kids is great, but being able to devote development resources into smaller classes at a time is definitely an advantage coaching wise and with the VFL side, there's more opportunity present there etc.

I will keep a look out for this kid.:thumbsu:

I have a lot of respect for your value pick opinions after you named Dan Hannaberry back in 2008 when he was hardly raising a murmur.:thumbsu:

One of my all time fav's, was shattered when he went to Sydney (we took Sam Wright a few picks before him) at the time he was perfect for that outside run, crazy that things have barely changed in 9 years!
