2017 trade hypothetical thread

i think one would do us.
Laverde, Begley, Mutch, Clark, Howlett - all possible additions to our inside midfield.
And Zaka has been good getting closer to the action.

I like the cheaper option of Balic. But i was also quite keen on him in his draft year and think we erred going both Redman & Morgan and not getting one of Balic or Mathieson.

Would also depend on the draft strategy and if we have an inside mid or 2 on the radar for the early picks, we may not look to Balic/Webb types.

I still like Wigg. Quick winger/HBF with a very good boot.
A good one to play off the opposite wing to Parish.

Not sure we are as well stocked for inside mids as you think. Laverde (fwd), Begley (fwd), Mutch (outside leaning), Clark (only one for the future imho and still plenty of deficiencies), Howlett (finished, no more than depth).

Forgot about Wigg but feelWebb & Balic fill our needs much better than Wigg who has only just transitioned into the Crows reserves midfield this year.

I'd love him at Hawthorn. With Vickery being a massive fail and Roughead not far off from retirement, Hawthorn could do with a genuine full forward.
I don't think rolling the dice again is the best bet for hawthorn. I'm not sure if it's just compassion for the bloke, who is a real hard worker and copped a lot of criticism on our board but I still have hope for him at Fremantle. His best games are some real solid B+ grade performances (when you take into consideration the opposition) but they're few and far between. He's a confidence player who mortal enemy is rain.
I also think fremantle aren't really in a position to let him go, we really don't have much in terms of forwards above 193cm.
At the end of the day I don't think Clarko would want him but if he did and Tabs wanted to leave a 2nd round pick (given it's GWS's that hawthorn hold) is probably fair if not overs.

at some point, the Saints owe the Swans something for that.
Pretty sure Bird was part of the deal too

We got 5, 24 & Bird
Saints got Carlisle and 14
Swans got pick 23 & 44

Does not add for sydney to me.
Sydney got extra draft points as (1171 for picks 23 and 44 vs 1161 for pick 14) that allowed them to get Callum mills at pick 3. Also salary cap relief by off loading Craig Bird's (Has only played VFL in 2017) contract to Essendon. So was a good outcome from Sydney's point of view.

Surely a third round pick is not asking too much for Balic. I mean I get we arent going to get close to value if he leaves which will suck and is part of the swings and roundabouts but a 4th? The kid will be a very good AFL player for 10+ years
Yeah a 3rd round pick is necessary or a reasonable pick swap/upgrade. A 4th round pick seems a bit harsh.

As an Essendon supporter, would love for a couple of trades to eventuate.

----------
Trade 1
----------
Western Bulldogs gain; Essendon 3rd Round Pick (currently - pick 44)
Essendon gain; Lukas Webb (21 y.o, 187cm, 85kg, Inside leaning Midfielder)

---------
Trade 2
---------

Fremantle gain; Essendon 4th Round Pick (currently 62)
Essendon gain; Harley Balic (20 y.o, 187cm, 82kg, Inside leaning Midfielder)

Would leave us light on with picks (currently picks 9, 26, 81, 99)
Pick 44 is worth very little in this years draft.
Pick 62 is worth didlly squat and you might be picking in the rookie draft by that point.

I wouldn't be happy about losing Balic for a 4th round pick, he is one of our most promising young talents now the punt we took on his wrist has worked out.

Balic and Webb would be worth about the same. Would happily trade out a Ben Howlett for a 3rd and on trade that pick to get both Balic & Webb.

Do you guys understand you have to weigh the value of a draft pick against the strength of the draft.

If you are trading a list clogger for a pick in the 3rd round this year fair enough. 4th round picks are likely only of interest to the academy clubs or clubs with father son kids for the points.

This is a really shallow draft. To put it in perspective, the middle of this years second round is equivalent to the middle of last years third round, and there is every chance there won't be many, if any picks in the 4th round.

And?

The kid is a decent prospect but no better than what Webb has offered up at the Bulldogs. Would happily give up a 3rd for Balic. Would prefer we take Webb first, on exposed form fits us better, on paper they are quite evenly matched.

Balic without the wrist at draft day could have gone top ten, hence his invitation to the draft.

Now the wrist risk is gone and he is playing very good football, and he is worth a third or fourth round pick?

I'd rather pay him $50,000 more a year and keep him.

Based on current ladder positions and rumours about the Dogs being into Lever, Carlton into Kelly and obviously Adelaide into Gibbs, hypothetical 3 way trade:

GIBBS > ADEL
LEVER > WB
KELLY > CAR
PICK 8 (WB) > ADEL > CARL > GWS
PICK 25 (WB) > ADEL
PICK 52 (ADEL) > WB
PICK 3 (CARL) > GWS
PICK 21 (GWS via COLL) > CARL

Summary:

CARLTON
IN: Kelly, Pick 21
OUT: Gibbs, Pick 3

GWS:
IN: Pick 3, Pick 8
OUT: Kelly, Pick 21

ADELAIDE:
IN: Gibbs, Pick 25
OUT: Lever, Pick 52

WB:
IN: Lever, Pick 52
OUT: Pick 8, Pick 25
Nice effort

Is there a decent chance that the Lions get a top ten pp?

No. There is no chance. None at all. Absolutely, positively zero chance

I'm pretty bullish on where Brisbane will be in 3-5 years. Once Fagan and Noble came in the writing was on the wall - this is a team that will sort it's shit out. The recent re signings prove that they have turned it around. Considering the sheer number of high picks hoovered up recently and the development of some of their academy players there is no need for charity

Yes, I think Craig Bird equalled 5 points in that deal..... we were all about points that year but as we were the liquidity that got the deal done we deserved far more from it. No chance the Saints will keep that in mind, it's a write off
