2017 trade hypothetical thread

Wow. I can't see that happening. You possible just don't rate Poppy or you don't believe that players over 29 have trade value.

Stevie J and Poppy are not like for like, considering Stevie was retired by Geelong and is not a role player.

I rate what Poppy was and I agree he could be useful to GWS moving forward.

Having said that, his value is extremely low.

He was not playing well when in the team, got injured and the team started playing well. Add that to the fact he is 30 and not getting any faster and you can see why his value is so low.

If Hawthorn can get any more than what I posted there then they deserve a high five.

It's hard to see them getting more than a 3rd or 4th rounder for him, agreed.

No, that's being a realist. You can't get a contracted player to up and leave their without paying a little over.

He's contracted and Hawthorn set the price. That much is obvious and I have no issues there.

But it's very optimistic to say they'll be willing to meet Hawthorn's demands just because they have interest in the player.

See the Gibbs non-trade last year. Adelaide had interest, and just because Carlton got to set the price doesn't mean the Crows had to follow through with it. No doubt it happens every year in less-public negotiations.

The Giants may well have interest in Puopolo, but if Hawthorn's price is too high for them they're not going to bend over backwards just to get it done.

If poppy asks Hawks to leave they will do it as he has earned that right for what he's given the club. Not once have I said we want a straight swap for a young mid, I said I'm sure a trade would be met that was fair and reasonable for both clubs. Hawthorn are a fair club to deal with, but if GWS want poppy they will end up paying more than what he is worth? Does this sound delusional?
There would be no chance hawthorn would dig their heels in and try and hold GWS over a barrel. They have a surplus of mids and I'm sure that would be a good starting point.

Cunnington underrated on here I think. If I were a club close to the top and needed inside grunt would give away a top 10 (maybe not top 5) pick for him. Considerably better than Prestia in my opinion, even though he is much older. Quality player, just not fashionable. Also a bit prone to whacking blokes.

Don't see how Poppy goes for more than pick 40. For perspective, what would Hawks get for Cyril? Pick 15-20 probably. Younger and better than Poppy.

No, but that's not what you said initially.

Your initial comment was that if GWS are keen on him, they'll be willing to pay more than what he's worth. Which clearly isn't true.

The option of unders or overs really is dependent on who really wants the trade.

Would a GWS need for Poppy be stronger than a Hawthorn need to move him on?

Hawthorn can't expect other clubs to take players from them just because Hawthorn need some quality players in the under 25 age group.

If GWS are courting poppy, you'll find they are willing to pay more than he's worth.
Giants have a plethora of younger mids that Hawks would be interested in, I'm sure a trade could be done that favours both sides
They could probably get Steve Motlop for a late 1st round pick, or 2nd round plus something else.

Small forwards who can pressure are not exactly rare, or difficult to develop. The last thing you'd want is an injured 30 yr old one on the decline who can't play any other position.

I think you are being too kind. Motlop would be considerably cheaper than that. Or they could add a harder edge and pick up Lindsay Thomas on the cheap.

Poppy is a totally different player to Motlop/Thomas etc. think what SEN were saying was that he is a player who brings pressure when the opposition has the ball eg chase and tackle all day, those other guys do it sometimes.
He would complement the GWS forward line perfectly if not injured over the next few years.
Saying that his value is not high, like someone said maybe a pick upgrade or another pick and poppy for a player(we'd have to trade for another pick as we don't have many).
Hawks over the years slightly over pay while in premiership contention if it's a need list wise, maybe GWS would slightly

The problem is that GWS have pick #27 and then pick #67.

I think #67 is pretty much bang on the money

So it will be hard for them to overpay.

Which is why I suggested

Poppy and #33 for #27. That values Poppy at pick #61 which is slightly overpaying?
