Time running out for Schache as Crow stalemate continues (Lee Gaskin, AFL.com.au, 17/10)

THE BRISBANE Lions remain hopeful they can secure Adelaide speedster Charlie Cameron, but concede time is running out for key forward Josh Schache to find a new home.

The Lions have offered pick 20 to the Crows in exchange for Cameron, who is contracted to remain at West Lakes until the end of 2018.

The Crows have refused to budge, wanting a player who can make an immediate impact to help this year's beaten grand finalists capitalise on its premiership window.

Lions general manager of football David Noble told NAB AFL Trade Radio that talks would progress over the next 24 to 48 hours before the trade period closes at 2pm AEDT on Thursday.

"We're hopeful to land Charlie," Noble said.

"We're certainly having some open dialogue with (the Crows).

"We'd like to think by the time we get to the end of trade period, something can be done.

"It might be until Thursday until we get our heads together and see what that looks like for them."

Cameron, 23, has played 73 games for the Crows since being taken with the seventh pick in the 2012 rookie draft.

The Lions could put pick 12 on the table, but Crows list manager Justin Reid said it wouldn't be enough.

"Pick 12 ain't going to help me next year," Reid told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday.

"We want to get to the last week of September again and Charlie will play 20-25 games and help us get there again.

"That's how we look at the value for us – the next 12 months – not what the value is right now."

AFL.com.au understands Lions utility Sam Mayes – a South Australian junior – isn't on the Crows' radar.

The No.8 overall pick in the 2012 draft, Mayes has played 95 games for the Lions, was fifth in their best and fairest this year and is under contract until 2019.

The Lions are less confident about Schache securing a fresh start, with minimal interest from rival clubs.

"There's a couple that are probably still putting their toe in the water," Noble said.

"We haven't had anyone that has legitimately come to us in the last 24 hours and said, 'Can we do a deal for Josh?'

"Something may happen today, but we're not too sure where that's going to sit.

"Clubs need to get organised, they need to do medicals, they need to do interviews with players, so the timeframe is starting to shorten.

"If he stays, he stays."

One player the Lions will definitely add to their ranks is Hawthorn veteran Luke Hodge, who they will hope will play for two years while also coaching.

The Lions can add the four-time premiership winner for nothing in the pre-season draft, but are considering doing a trade with the Hawks to provide them with compensation.

"That was the plan, through pre-season, but if we can do something and help Hawthorn come Thursday, then that's just a nice gesture," Noble said.

"He's been a great player for Hawthorn and a great stalwart."

Noble said the Lions wouldn't be pursuing their initial interest in Power ruckman Matthew Lobbe, while fellow big man Stefan Martin will be staying at the club.

Jake Stringer move to Essendon hanging on a thread (Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan, The Age, 17/10)

Meanwhile, the immediate future of several contracted players will hang on discussions planned for Wednesday, with the Brisbane Lions set to resume talks with Adelaide in an attempt to convince the Crows to trade Charlie Cameron.

If the Crows decide to retain Cameron, who has a year remaining on his contract, they face the risk of losing him for little return at the end of next season.

After putting himself on the market, Brisbane Lions tall Josh Schache is preparing to resume his career in Queensland after no serious suitor emerged on Tuesday.

With less than two days remaining in this trade period, time is running out for a Victorian club to make a play for the 19-year-old, who has played 27 games in two seasons with the Lions.

Trade wrap: Gibbs the key to Cameron deal (Nick Bowen and Nathan Schmook, AFL.com.au, 17/10)

Unless Adelaide is able to convert its recently acquired bounty of draft picks into a readymade player or players, Charlie Cameron's requested trade to the Brisbane Lions appears doomed.

The Crows' list management team has no interest in accumulating a third top-20 draft pick by trading Cameron. Their focus, instead, is on bringing in experienced players who can help Don Pyke and his team next season, when they will be hell bent on avenging their 2017 Grand Final loss.

Hawks small forward Paul Puopolo and Bombers defender Aaron Francis are among the players linked to Adelaide, but its No.1 target is unmistakably Carlton midfielder Bryce Gibbs.

After dancing around the Gibbs issue for much of the Trade Period, the Crows are understood to be in talks with the Blues, trying to convince them to change their rigid stance on holding the South Australian to the final two years of his contract.

What do the Crows have to throw at the Blues?

The Crows have picks Nos.10 and 16 in this year's draft and have been offered pick No.20 by the Lions for Cameron, although they could push for pick No.12.

They also have two first-round picks in next year's draft – theirs and Melbourne's – although the likely presence of star South Australian juniors Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine and Connor Rozee in the 2018 pool means the Crows have probably made those selections untouchable.

The Blues asked for two first-round selections for Gibbs last year, a demand the Crows baulked at.

Will they be prepared to go that far, if necessary, this year?

In the meantime, all the Lions can do is wait.

They have had no meaningful talks with Adelaide over Cameron since offering pick No.20.

And if the Blues don't budge on Gibbs, the Crows almost certainly won't budge on Cameron.

The Lions' pursuit of the Crows speedster would then have to wait until he comes out of contract at the end of 2018.

The chances of homesick Brisbane Lions spearhead Josh Schache being traded home to Victoria now seem slim, with the Western Bulldogs unlikely to pursue their interest in 2015's No.2 draft pick.

Adelaide continues to butt heads with Brisbane over wantaway forward Charlie Cameron (Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 17/10)

ADELAIDE continues to reject realistic trade deals for Charlie Cameron and has instead demanded Lions star Dayne Zorko in exchange for the homesick star.

Crows list manager Justin Reid continues to butt heads with Cameron’s management, saying the beaten Grand Finalists need an established player if they are to release him.

The Lions have already offered pick No.20 as compensation but Adelaide is refusing to listen to deals that involve picks.

Cameron will walk to Brisbane in the pre-season draft at the end of next year if Adelaide holds him to the last season of his contract.

The Zorko request is ridiculous given he just won his third best-and-fairest in a row at the Lions.

But it underlines the hard line nature of Reid’s demands after losing Jake Lever to Melbourne and missing out on free agent Steven Motlop.

It seems certain the Lions will have to wait another year for Cameron unless the Crows can find a senior player to fill the void.

Adelaide and Carlton continue to work behind the scenes on a deal for veteran Blue Bryce Gibbs, which would be a circuit-breaker for Cameron to get to the Lions.

Meanwhile, Brisbane says any interest the Western Bulldogs had in 200cm forward Josh Schache has cooled.

The Dogs had inquired about what it might take to secure him and could have used a pick from Essendon if they accepted picks 25 and 30 for Jake Stringer.

They have told the Lions they won’t be trading for him.

It means the 2015 No.2 draft pick seems destined to return to the Lions to fulfil the third year of his contract.

He has spoken with coach Chris Fagan in recent days, is trying to build fitness and lose weight over the off-season and is happy to return.

Brisbane seems to have cooled on trading for Port Adelaide ruckman Matthew Lobbe in recent days, with Gold Coast also not interested.

The Lions will likely secure Luke Hodge with a pick in the pre-season draft or at most trade a late pick to the Hawks.

Hodge will be well paid on a two-year deal and has already started looking at vision of Lions players despite being on holidays.
