Yeah see this is the thing. Whilst I am sure most of us would rather give a younger player a go, if Johnson stays on it is not to be Pearce's backup. He stays on to be an on and off field leader. Ie HE IS GOING TO PLAY.

I am not saying I THINK he shouldn't come I am saying if you were in his shoes why would you come? Ross is going to play Johnno if fit and that leaves to spots between Hamling, Pearce and Logue.

Again I am happy to get Aliir but I can not understand why he would come unless the club tells him he is ahead of 1 or more of our existing defenders.

Also thoroughly disagree you can play Hamling, Pearce, Logue and Aliir together. Too tall and it stops 1 of Hughes, Ryan or Weller/Blakely playing in the backline.
If Allir came, then Johnson is gone. I also don't know about too tall, as the four of them are quite mobile
If we got Wilson, we'd have he and Ryan at the feet of the talls.
I don't mind it.

Also, for mine, Blakely is a midfielder, as is Weller.
Hughes would push all tall backs.
We could grab Brander knowing the backs and mids are sorted

Ballantyne might have advised the club that he will explore free agency too
Given that Colin Young publicly agitated for a trade to the Eagles while Ballantyne was contracted, I don't see him staying quiet if his player is on the market. This and the public support from Ross suggest to me he has another contract on the table from Freo.

Why are we discussing MJ? If Collins, Nyhius haven't made best 22 then what chance Allir?
Honestly all three of Balla, MJ, Sandi have seen their best. All great Freo players but wont be
around for our next tilt.
I have great faith in Hughes, Logue, and have massive upside. Hughes, Logue, Nyhius, can all
play tall or small.
Back line is the least of our problems, even Cox Can go down back.

I'm not sure I see a spot for Aliir without booting one of our other KPDs out of the side. Depth may be a concern if Cox ends up playing forward but if he doesn't and AP can get a decent run of games I don't even see the room for Hamling, AP, Logue and Cox without throwing one forward.

Collins is average but plenty of good depth KPDs have been drafted much later. I still reckon Sydney would want at least a third rounder for Aliir which as it stands is our second top draft selection. That's unless Sydney are trying to get rid of him at all costs which even though he's had a few off field problems I still doubt. If MJ plays on, which it looks like he is I'd rather draft someone like Sam Taylor (looks like he'll last quite late) and have him sit behind the other 4-5 for a season.

I don't think Liam Ryan play like a small forward but more Kersten style but better movement and read of the ball well when further up the field .
He means he plays as a small leading forward, rather than a small forward who relies on crumbing the ball and getting front and centre.

Will Logue be a defender in 5 years, or will he be midfielder ?
Can A Pearce play forward?

I do agree that we need Blakely, Ryan, Hughes and Langdon running through the back line to help us break the lines.

With out depth, if we can get Aliir for a 3rd round pick I would take it and then work out how to get him into the team. If that means playing A Pearce forward or Logue on the wing then so be it.
Where Logue will be in 5 years is irrelevant (for the record I am firmly in the "he is NOT a midfield" camp). He is going to play defense next year. A Pearce is a defender. Showed heaps at the back and only a shred of that up forward.

In any event, I am not arguing what I think should happen. I am arguing what Ross is going to do. And that is to play 3 of Hamling, Johnson, Pearce and Logue.

Again, I am happy to get Aliir on the cheap, but I don't think he will come to play depth when he can just do that at the Swans.

You're right. Thanks for the correction.

It's more like can't than doesn't want to. His missus has a daughter from another relationship and they have to keep the child near her dad (which is totally fair).
Sounds a similar but slightly different issue to Stringer from WB...

I know Ballas likes it down on the farm as well so lifestyle choices really.

Guarantee we don't play 4 talls at the back. If Aliir comes AND Johnson goes he is still behind Pearce, Logue and Hamling.

Agree Blakely and Weller are midfielders but once they move into the midfield someone else will play their roles.

Like I said before - we could still get Aliir next year if not this year. Hopefully Johnson is officially done by then and we will have a better read on APearces' situation who I'm not holding my breath for. Would be ideal cover for the both of them. I think we will have to deal with the headache of playing Johnson and Spurr for another year sadly despite our back-line being in better place than other parts of the ground.

If we can convince Aliir to come on the cheap, that's great. I am not holding my breath.

We know? That's the point of getting him like I originally said because he would be cheap. If you're out of favor for a whole season and miss a finals campaign after being a pivotal player in your sides season campaign the year before then you would think Sydney would be open to moving him on if it continues onto next year.
